I couldn't decide on an appropriate place to put this so here it is.

===Takumi333's Rare Uploads Series===

Wangan Midnight (湾岸MidNight), 1991
The series was adapted into a series of direct-to-video movies starting in 1991. They accurately depict the manga, with the exception of Akio being in his thirties. Many Japanese viewers hold the films in high regard for their realistic portrayal of the racing with the cars having the speed they have in the manga. (source: wikipedia)

Letterboxed
Japanese audio, NO SUBTITLES

Not a bad rip considering it's from a VHS tape rather than the DVD. It does make me wonder why one would go through the trouble of getting and converting the VHS tape though. I mean, this movie's out on DVD already. What's the point?

Plot-wise the movie drags on--especially in the 'romance' bits--but the acting for the lead male characters is pretty much on point and the script is of course taken verbatim from the original manga. The most impressive part about this film when compared to that other one is that it really does have a blow-through twin-turbo triple-carb engine setup shown. That's exactly the engine that should be in the Devil Z, but it's a setup that you just don't see anymore (because it's needlessly complex and expensive compared to just tuning up an L28ET from the S130). That they bothered to have the right engine is impressive.

That being said, I find it interesting that they use a 280Z throughout the film rather than a 240Z. I guess the only example of that motor they could find was in a 280 and they couldn't come up with a deal to temporarily swap it into a 240?

In any event, not a bad piece of nostalgia. I'm pretty sure I lost my DVDs of the old movies but if I see 'em around I'll pick 'em up and share.

Because AFAIK it can only be found in the Wangan Midnight 9101 DVD Box which is around $300 used.

The upside to Japanese VHS tapes is they are almost always letterboxed so no troublesome pan & scan rips (god knows I have too many of those sad.gif ).

That would awesome, I know quite a few V Cinema movies were fansubbed back in the 90s onto VHS but are near impossible to find (Crime Hunter for example). I had a few, even the first DBZ fansubs on VHS decades ago, but they were lost when I got rid of my extensive (1,000+) VHS collection a decade ago. sad.gif

For anyone still interested in these. There's now Ai translators that do a really good job. I've been able to download the movies off YouTube and then upload them to a translator site .
