I'd say get an Intel based build - i5 or i7 - and some decent RAM - Mushkin or such - and run a 64bit OS like Win 7 64bit. In terms of boards it depends on your preference and on the features..............maybe something that has USB3 to future-proof the build, but if you're just going to use it for work you don't need to get something that's non-integrated (unless you plan to play some games on it in whatever spare time). Your primary things are CPU for crunching, RAM for workspace and hard drive. I'd prolly suggest getting at least one SSD. Others may come in and suggest different brands such as Gigabyte, Asus, EVGA or others but staying within the budget may not be so hard.

Look at this -> http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Se...9394&CatId=4149 <- if you can get a barebone system for 600 dollars with those specs I'm fairly sure that you can build something for about the same price or less to fit your needs.

I know the end cost was somewhere around there after reusing the old case, but a buddy of mine recently had me build him a 6-core AMD box, 16GB RAM, dual Radeon 5870s. Good times. Great results.
