That can do batching of lotsa files? & preferably a free program.

I just want to amplify (as much as possible without distortion) all the MP3s on my portable MP3 player to use in the car. I have an old version of Cool Edit Pro but doing them all one by one will take ages.. Oh, keeping the ID tags in the files would be very handy too.

Hmm... free audio editors like Audacity should get the job done, keeping the tags.
It has lots of good tools for that, like amplification, leveling, normalizing, etc.

Do you mean lots of files at once? Because nevermind that if you do... (derp)
Windows Audio Converter has an audio leveling option when converting files, if that helps. You can put as many as you want in. Not sure about the ID tags, though, sorry.

I haven`t got CoolEdit any longer, but I`m trying to remember if it has a batch scripting option in it, like Audacity has ?

Also, is your player ReplayGain aware ? then you could use something like MP3Gain/Foobar which is non-destructive and uses APE tags (I think)...
but that will only be of any use if they are particularly quiet to begin with and will allow the amplitude to be raised.
You might find there`s not a lot to gain with that....no pun intended.

Another thing, you`re going to have to re-encode to amplify them which means losing some quality...but if they are just for the car I guess that isn`t going to matter, you probably wouldn`t notice.

Otherwise, there must be something simple out there - it`s just finding it, I haven`t got much audio software here at the moment to test as I only use replaygain on my mp3s.

I have used this in the past for other things, but it seems it can be used for volume changes as well...and can batch process.

only test it on copies of your files !!!!

I just tried MP3gain. Will see how it is in the car when I next drive it. Is getting annoying to have a low volume song, turn up the volume, then the next song be too loud when it starts.. Plus the subwoofer in the car is too overkill for my tastes.

Pretty sure the MP3 player isn't gain aware. It's a Soniq one, not one of the more common iPods or Creative players.
