Hello fellow IDWers,

I was just curious as to what opinions people have in these parts regarding Windows 10. Is it worth upgrading to or is it better to stick with Windows 7/8?

I have been using Windows 10 for more than a few weeks now.

And to make this clear, if you are upgrading to Windows 10, Windows Updates are forced to be on. It need quite some work to stop the computer from automatically updating itself.

With that out of the way, Lets explain why if you don't mind auto updates, you should/should not get Windows 10.

If you have been using Windows 8, you will find Windows 10 absolutely fine, with a couple of extra neat features here and there. For one, the start menu comes back. You can customize it to be anything you want. From the tiles on Windows 8 to just all icons. The user interface is fairly customizable too. You can choose to have no task view or search button on the taskbar if you really want to. The settings menu have a bigger portion of options converted to a metro-style settings menu, but the Control Panel is still there if you really want to.

If you are coming from Windows 7, there might be a few annoyances you might not like for windows 10.
Enforced dwm.exe: Windows Classic (95) themes are no longer there. And the desktop is forced to be composed by dwm, which enforces a v-sync on all your windows, resulting in input lag in borderless gaming.

Other than that, Windows 10 is a pretty solid OS right now. Never had any problems with it that wasn't an issue on 7/8.

Everything works. Nothing has broken down. Upgrade if you want.

Windows 10 is a broken piece of botnet shit, and I'm not going into more detail than that because it's 7 AM and I'm on my phone. Stick with 7 to the bitter end.

Hah. What a joke.

I will not be very bothered by that because as we know, CIA is already reading all our personal emails before the Windows 10 had done it. But if you want to turn botnet off, there are some not-so-complicated tutorials lying about on the internet.

About keylogging, Windows XP had long been doing that, so Microsoft already knew you say cuck every 10 days.

Windows 10 is not broken in any way. If you want to say it invades our privacy and "muh freedoms", Windows 7 does the same.

The only valid point is the inability to turn off the Windows Update, but as already been proven, you can add a firewall outbound rule to Windows Update itself, and Windows will not be able to update, basically being stopped by their own firewall.

To an average user, Windows 10 is a very functional OS.

HAHAHA HOLY SHIT

Windows 10 is "not broken in any way!?"

Keep sucking Microshaft's dick. Holy fuck.

Windows Update. Unified Control Panel. Removing applications without user interaction. But psh, what do I know?

Is the privacy stuff that bad in Windows 10, N1?

I'm not really all up on Windows these days, all I've heard was that there are some features (Cortana, search suggestions, stuff in that new MS web browser) that call home but that they can be disabled; the only thing I've read that might be semi-difficult to disable are windows updates.

Not semi-difficult. Impossible unless you're an Enterprise user (and how long will that last?). If you're content with the OS altering your system without your permission then by all means, go nuts. Have fun! I'm sure Falbere knows way more than I do about computing. smile.gif

EDIT: Before Falbere jumps in, you have to break Windows Update completely to keep it from operating automatically. I don't consider that viable.

Oh, wow, I'm surprised they're doing that considering alternatives (Linux, Mac OS X), which are free, do have some minor tracking (mostly related to web searches though) stuff that you can disable and that's that.

Personally I'd love to see Falbere's explanation about how XP, Vista and 7 "do the same things." Please, I'm all ears, as it were.

as someone who is not a power user but also not fully a casual user.

Windows 10 is a broken piece of shit.

I mean almost every update is stuff I disabled being turned back on, re-running debloat scripts, Disk usage being jacked up to 100%. And even now, 10 can't fucking figure out how to keep a custom cursor on a theme after you reboot. Hell their most recent update was a fix for one of their older updates COMPLETELY FUCKING UP YOUR WIFI.

So if you don't buy into the privacy aspect being a bad thing, you can just google "Windows 10 100% Disk usage" and see how far back it goes. You'll even see their "new" feature that makes a task "system and compressed memory" a resource hog.

I doubt bozz is a power user. Just use it whatever it works. You can do normal windows stuff on it. Not complicated.

Edit: I can make you a video of me clicking around on windows watching porn.

"You can do stuff on it" can be said about plenty of operating systems that probably aren't worth actually using. I fail to see how that's a coherent argument as to why going with 10 is better than sticking to 7. With that argument I can just tell him to run RedHat.

"It works"

I just pointed out how by default, most Windows 10 installs will force your hard drive to use 100% of its resources due to multiple background processes you don't need slowing down your system. And there is no "easy" way to figure out what's causing it, which is failure in design. It's not so simple as "turn off all the bloatware 10 has" either, because most of it turns itself back on without your permission.

I'm not even making the hurr botnet argument with it. It's a problem since 8 and Microsoft still hasn't fixed it.

>Defragging
>With an SSD

Please continue talking out of your ass, it's vaguely amusing since Defragmenting a drive hasn't actually fixed anything since 7.

Actual things that cause Windows 8/8.1/10 to hog resources:

BITS
Superfetch
Windows Search service
Windows Defender (idling or not) - Which you can't turn off without registry editing, something out of your intelligence level it seems.
Windows 10's notifications (I shit you not)
Defragging - In fact, fixing the problem for 8/10 requires you to hunt for the task scheduling and completely disable the damn thing, because by default it runs all the time and is set to run with the highest possible privilege.
OneDrive: On by default. Also cannot be uninstalled like a normal program.
The list goes on!

Don't understand half this shit? Good! Welcome to why 10 is awful!

Since XP*

NTFS pretty much made scheduled defragmentation a worthless waste of drive head flying hours. The transition from FAT32 to NTFS came well before 7.

Doesn't change the level of hilarity above you, though!

If your point was that defragmenting was the cause, you're only partially right. It's a cause, but it's not the cause. It also wouldn't explain why you're still running it. If you're suggesting that defragmenting solves the problem, hahaha oh wow.

Neither of which excuse the fact that you have an SSD and have defragged it.

Topkek.

Windows 10 user here.

It's awful.

I'm in it for the long ride.
If you don't care about the spying, such as I, there's plenty of things to NOT like about 10, along with a few things to like..

So lets get the good out the way shall we?
Prior to 1511, i'd say nothing really good about w10, after that patch..lets see

1. It's very pretty
2. It performs decently. Part of it is how it uses ram, iirc, it'll reserve more ram and is just a bit smarter in how it allocates it.

so whats not to like?
1. It broke everything you couldn't even imagine was possible to be broken. I mean, this is stuff Windows ME fixed.

Want an example? The shutdown process is totally bonkers. The way services are terminated causes expected errors to be reported, and in such a way that it causes dings and dongs during shutdown as crucial services are ended. I haven't experienced this since 98.

Auto-hide taskbar is broken too. Alt tabbing between a d3d game causes an auto hidden taskbar to go ballistic. What happens is the taskbar will...de-laminate itself from its container, turning instead into a small thin strip near the bottom that has no buttons. You would assume this was a graphics artifact, except it isnt. You can actually right click on this thin strip, tell it to unlock the task bar, then tell it to lock it again..and viola..bug fixed..

just..why?

MS broke NIC teaming recently too, so you cant make new NIC teams..

Theres just a bunch of stuff in w10 that worked in 7 and 8.1 but now no longer works.

Bundle these unexpected mysteries with the fact that you'll be playing around in the registry and GPedit for days makes w10 without a doubt, longer to setup than 7 or 8.1 for discerning users.

As for random HDD usage, i managed to pinpoint some of mine to...
*drumroll*

The new photo viewer..

yeah...
It'll try to automatically create and sort galleries for you. I dont even...

im sure glad i stuck with W7. i do have some tiny W10 issues, mostly the PC W7 "persuading" me to take advantage of the free W10 upgrade. i dont see myself using W10 until it around 2 years old, hopefully they fixed the issues by then. im just glad W7 doesnt make the choice for me to upgrade the OS.

Wow, and I was pissed a while back because my pc had problems with the free upgrade from 7 (it kept failing to update or something). Guess I didn't miss much.
