Everyone here have tried the traditional time attacks, run around the circuit in a car and get the lowest possible time, however this normally means it just takes you one lap at full speed and that's it.
Suffice to say, for this challenge it is going to be different as one lap isn't going to be enough...
This is IDW's first true endurance challenge and it is going to be a long haul, so lets get on with the challenge, I give you "The Cannonball Run!"

user posted image

For this challenge it is based on the first Cannonball Run movie and is probably the greatest of them all, sadly it didn't mention starting or ending points but a distance was mentioned.
3000 miles / 4828 kilometres, suffice to say on a track like El Capitan that would equal to 1010 laps which would tax the drivers and GT4 every so much.
So for gameplay reasons I am being a bit "kind" on the drivers and give you half that distance, 1500 miles / 2414 kilometres.

Naturally since I want to replicate the American interstate feeling I chose the track El Capitan as it is the closest you get to the roads used in the Cannonball Run movie that this challenge is based on.
So what I expect you to run is 505 laps around El Capitan, you are allowed to pause the game at any time and take a break unlike what they did in the movie, consider that a gameplay advantage.

A good advice to be able to cope with this distance is to set up your car for easy driving and find a good pace and run a bit every day.
I don't expect results up in a hurry to this challenge and I am hindered myself from starting due to a lack of TV however as soon as I can I am starting to run my R34.

THIS CHALLENGE IS SUPPOSED TO BE RUNNED IN PHOTO MODE, NOT THE REGULAR TIME TRIAL / PRACTICE MODE!

Challenge Rules:
Power limit is 400 HP

Tires allowed are S class and N class tires, no R tires are allowed.

Race cars and concepts are not allowed.

Tuning cars that fits the HP requirement are allowed.

All modifications are allowed, nitrous is somewhat allowed but not recommended.

Multiple entries are ok, but most people will probably only do 1 for obvious reasons.

REGULAR STREET MACHINES only, this means cars like the Elise's, Caterhams and other machinery that are commonly viewed as "cheat cars" are not allowed to run in the challenge, the special exclude list of cars are listed at the end of these rules.

Using your main car IS encouraged, for an example Kurei would be encouraged to run his Impreza but it is no demand.

Wallriding is not allowed naturally, running off course is partly acceptable as a mistake but not doing it for speed.

Challenge Prizes:
1st, 2nd, and 3rd place will receive appropriate image to state their participation in IDW's first endurance race and as true "Cannonballers"

And there is another way to win in this challenge besides being the first across the line! If you chose a street car that is pretty odd ball for a challenge like this, such as a heavy pickup truck for an example you are subject for a reward for that, so you can win on car choice if you think you cannot defeat the other runners.

How to post your time:
This is a question that not a lot of people know the answer to.
However Lynk developed a way for his league back in the day and we are going to copy it as it counts total time spent in the replay rather than fastest lap.
Granted you can earn a few hundreds by being quicker to end the replay but over a distance like this it is most likely going to be decided by minutes rather than seconds. So here is the method:

When you are done with the race and have raced the 505 laps exit and at the race menu select "Save Replay".
On the top should be a blue rectangle with your race time in it and that's the time we will be using and the one you will issue.
If there is still some doubt you should be prepared to issue screenshots of start and some points during the race to verify it, however honour system DOES apply here.
As a side note, the race is over when you cross the line at your 505th lap, in other words just when the lap counter changes from 505 to 506.

Cars that aren't allowed:
Amuse S2000 R1 (The one with the wing and racing stickers)
Lotus Elise machines (Seems to be easy to drive and will make it hard for others to remain competitive)
The Caterham (Another car that is not wanted, this one doesn't fit in the Cannonball Run theme with street cars so to speak)

At the moment all other machines than these 3 that fits the above specifications are allowed with the oddball price still on standby.

A few tips:

Change the oil before the race, you don't want to run 1500 miles with dirty oil.

Set up the car for the most comfortable setting rather than lowest lap times, remember once the race has begun you cannot change anything.

Pit fuel strategy may play a role, so figure out if you are quick around the track and may need to spend less time in the pits or spend more time and stay out there for a longer period of time.

PARTICIPANTS:
First off, if you are going to run this challenge, post here first and I'll add you to the list, time will follow when you are done, this is done out of cosmetic reasons so those who do not run the entire race will be listed with a "DNF" (Did Not Finish) instead of a time on the time table, car choice will also have to be reported as it will also show up on the list.

Sweeper / Nissan Skyline GT-R Vspec 2 R34.
JTM666 / 1983 Honda Civic
FinToy-83 / Mazda 110S (L10A) '67 / DNF
FinToy-83 / Mazda RX-7 Type RZ (FD, J)'92
Abe / Nissan 280Z '78

Best of luck to all of the Cannonball Runners that decides to participate in this LONG HAUL race.

After reviewing my calender, i've realized that i may not be able to participate like i thought, cause i forgot i now have a job, along with Senior school year planning, and planing my memorial day weekend activities, and those damned exams, plus the fact that im not a only child, so i can't take the PS2 away from him to use, plus i have some back problems (being a mechanic can kill a back faster than you think)

I keep a eye on this though to see what happens

Ooo. But is a Tommy Kaira considered an Elise machine? If not, I'll stick with the 120d. I don't know if I'll participate in this race since it demands alot of time. tongue.gif Which I lack of.

I'm down for this, just got my first 24 hour race under my belt last weekend (plenty of b-spec, but it still took about 14 hours). I'll be in an m3 csl.

edit: scratch the car for now actually, I'll find something more interesting.

edit again: alright, got a more fun one, a '78 280Z

It's an Eight-Six JTM! It's just got to be.

Or some MX-5....

Anyway,
I'll give it a go on the weekends but around how much time will this take? Is B-Spec allowed, since most of those who enter have another driver with them? If it involves more than 5 hours then count me out unless B-Spec is allowed.

definitely more than 5 hours for this, i did some math earlier. Averaging around 2 minutes a lap with pits and whatnot, 505 laps comes out to about 16 hours.

though, I won't start driving before finishing the few last econoboxes.. withing this week. if my calculations are correct, I'll be able to finish this off within 14 hours after starting.. so, in weekend it'll be done!

I was tempted to use my savage BRG Lotus Elan, but that would had been cheating, don'tcha think? wink2.gif

I am the only guy running a new machine heh Oh well, it is still going to be interesting nevertheless.
Because newer cars ARE allowed you know and the TommyKaira is fully legal as long as it isn't the secret 500 HP one with AWD as that one has WAY too much power to compete.

But I see some people are trying to gun for the "Odd choice" here and for that I'll give you a great thumbs up.

That's why I'm planning to drive it in manual (Believe it or not, I use automatic in the other challenges as well), and just change gears at about 3-4k rpm. Should give me reasonable speed and mileage. Of course, this is a challenge for this guzzler itself, right?

so far ive run 15 laps, my best time being in te 2:08.xxx region. not that quick, but i have only jsut used my second bit of fuel, so according to my calculations, i should get around 60 laps to a tank, which i am happy with. ill update again after i get back into it again.
