If you have an FF car and wanted to put a powerful engine, say a V8, under the hood but needed to switch the drivetrain from the front to the rear wheels to get better performance, is it possible to do that?

I think the guys who drive Scion tCs in Formula D do this, but I'm not sure. sad.gif Care to enlighten me everyone? I'm no car expert but I'm working on on it. wink2.gif

No, you can't do it. I could. I know A: people, and B: fabrication skills.

It completely depends on the car. If you've got a fwd Eclipse, you can swap in a 4wd drivetrain pretty easily, but turning a Scion TC into a rear drive car involves some serious modification. This would be a lot easier if cars still had spaceframes. Monocoque cars are typically designed for one drivetrain layout and often only one engine and transmission. If you're good at fabricating/welding, you can usually make some engine mounts to put a Chevrolet Small Block into pretty much any car. It's been done with some weird ones. Also some guy put the running gear from a Toyota truck into a Ford Escort body. Anything is possible, if you pony up enough Dinero.

I believe the ford focus guys commonly stuff big V8's into their cars and make em' RWD. so yeah, it can be done. Depends on the car, the drive-train, and the amount of fab work you're willing to do or pay for.

Hmm, well I was just talking to my dad about this and he told me something different.

"It's possible, but the best way to do it is to take out the FF layout and replace it with an FR layout. You'd probably have to shorten the layout a little since FFs tend to be shorter cars than FRs and then tuned it to where it can perform like a true FR with a V8 in it. So in the end, you got a customized FR with the body of an FF car."

That's pretty interesting, and pretty cool whistling.gif . I like to try that sometime.

it gets abit more complicated than that, finding or fabbing a suitable rear end comes in mind.

So far as I know, any race car worth it's salt is made with a steel frame with body panels thrown on top of it. The Nascar Toyota Camrys have exactly zero parts in common with anything you can buy from a Toyota dealership. I'm willing to bet those Scions use a similar setup. If they use any of the original body, it's highly modified.

I am reminded of myself when I first found out about the distinct lack of FR's in the Philippines that were not solely built for people carrying.

Honestly, you could, but why bother? For the time, money, and effort it takes yo turn a front wheel drive into a rear driven powerhouse, you might as well just buy said rear driven powerhouse.

As I mentioned before, its common for the Ford Focus guys to go about making their cars RWD with a v8. They're defiantly NOT the fiberglass Husk on frame cars you'll see in professional races.

and as for why? well..if you have the time and money, why the f**k not laugh.gif

It's not plug-and-play like Forza Motorsport 3 would have you believe.

Just remember, anything is possible if you have enough money.

I think your definition of common is a bit off. laugh.gif

There are a handful of cars like that AFAIK. It has been done, yes, but it is far from common. Extensive modifications are required.

Which is all you'd be able to do in it: sleep. It'd be illegal for about 99% of racing.

^ I donno if that warn was really necessary, but whatever.

I don't know why you would convert a FF car into RWD/AWD without the intention of tracking or racing it. flohtingPoint is right, it would be a b*tch to even get it deemed as safe, let alone racing in a series (which, again, it would be definitely illegal).

Apex is right though, you could race in a straight line, I mean, that the best you're gonna get, unless you wanna take it to the streets.

Maybe somebody wants to shoot for that 1%. CanAm, Pikes Peak, Group X, and anything else I'm forgetting that has an unlimited class or allows this modification are all a billion times more glorious than SCCA autocross. And that 99% is a lot smaller if you don't count every formula or spec class.

Who really knows. You see a lot of engine swaps that have absolutely no purpose for track use, aside from maybe taking it down the quarter mile every now and again.

Crazy engine swaps exist simply for the purpose of having a crazy engine swap. If someone has the time and money and/or mechanical skill to shoehorn a Northstar V8 into an Austin Mini, then all the power to them.

Take a minute and really think about what you just wrote. Waiting... Waiting...

People with large capital and financial backing from sponsors do that type of racing, not jackoffs on Initial D boards. You're giving a moron the benefit of the doubt, that's like giving a 10 year old a live grenade.

http://jalopnik.com/5497042/how-a-500-crai...0k-rally-racers

Sure, jackoffs without factory backing aren't often going to beat those with it, but at least they're having fun. Racing isn't always about winning. If it were, why would anybody but Ferrari bother showing up to a grand prix? It's unrealistic to expect anybody on this forum to do stuff like that, but you don't have to crush their dreams.

And maybe that moron I gave the benefit of the doubt is me? I don't have any intention of swapping a car's drivetrain, I haven't found any combinations that are worth the effort, but you can bet your ass I want to race something in a class I know I won't win. You need to worry about finishing before you can worry about winning. Not that you'd know that. You could ostensibly finish an autocross session without any of the components cars need in order to run longer than 2 minutes.

Hey, hey. Knock it off you you guys. We're not here to figure out who the real idiot is. Take that somewhere else if you want to discuss that, but NOT here.

I asked a simple question that only required a simple answer. It got techniquel, yes, but there's no need to start blasting each other just because someone thinks it's stupid to convert an FF into an FR. I for one, think it would be very interesting to do something like that, regardless of the amount of money or time it would take.
