Hang with me, I've built this box back in 2k1 back when I was totally into having the fastest computer I could on lame low rank enlisted pay. My comps system is, in a nutshell:
-Some cubecase who's name I forgot, its like Yeong Yang or something
-EPoX 8KHA+ FSB@160ish (havent looked at it in decades)
-Athlon 1800XP+ oc'ed to 1800 (used to be higher, but as I started to game less I stopped caring)
-Misc pieced together watercooling, custom fabricated HS unit, 1/4 tubing, innovatech radiator
-Matrox Parhelia 512 (bought this when I stopped gaming and started doing graphics hardcore)
-CL Live 5.1
-Adaptec Ultra160 SCSI controller
-3 15krpm seagate cheetah 36.7gb scsi hdd's
-Digidoc monitor drive
-misc burner/dvd drive

Yea, my crap is messy, I've been deployed and on a long amount of leave recently.

I used to have dual monitors, but my older 17'inch crapped out on me. I dont blame it though, I had that back when I had my first 4MB Monster 3DFX card.

For kicks, heres my junky tv I play PS2 on. Its really hard to see anything on it, and I'm suprised I can drift like I can on GT3.

Damn lazy b*tch, I should just phuck her and then pay her from now on.

Wait....... does that make me a John then?

Posted by: flohtingPoint Oct 20 2004, 12:27 PM
Every once in a while she shows up to take out some garbage and steal my pocket-change, but try to get her to do laundry? Good lord, thats quite a task.

Posted by: Jayson Oct 20 2004, 12:41 PM
and don't even bother with cooking! thats a nightmare in itself

Posted by: flohtingPoint Oct 20 2004, 12:43 PM
Ah yea, thats where the hotpocket garbage on my floor comes into play, freakin maid never cooks, and when she does, it tastes like trash.

Posted by: Jayson Oct 20 2004, 12:45 PM
I don't even bother asking her, instead I phuck her silly. Both parties are happy in the end me thinks ^__^

Its a yamaha DTX 6 piece kit. It used to be a 6 with double-bass, but my 2nd pedal is fuxx0red so I just subbed in a lower tom.

Well here's my specs right now, the cpu is cooked atm so I plan on upgrading to a 2400.

-Black old school alienware styled server tower (no glass side, hate those)
-MSI mobo (don't remember what model off the top of my head atm)
-SB Live 5.1
-AMD Anthlon XP 2100+
-1 gigabyte DDR RAM
-nVidia AGP Geforce4 Ti 4200 128mb
-nVidia PCI TNT2 m64 (yep, dual monitor beyatches cool.gif )
-2 Western Digital 7200rpm HDs (1 60gig, 1 40gig)
-450watt Powersupply
-12x CDburner (soon to be replaced by a DVD burner)
-Compaq laptop LS120 SuperDisk drive (swapable)
-Compaq laptop DVD drive (swapable)
-Green "Underbody" coldcathode light
-clear fans x2 located on the door & in front
-Green internal coldcathode light
-Flame side grill
-Green lightup fans in the rear near the CPU
-Custom Airbrushed side door (a dragon)

This is all I can rember off the top of my head but I plan to do a renovation of it soon. Btw, here's what my side door looked like right after I got the airbrushing done (note, if it doesn't show you may have to reload the page since netscape.com seems to be messing up linked images lately):

Man Apex u got sooo much money tied up into your PC... Heck you spent more building that PC then I did on 3 of my cars combined laugh.gif
But man that is seriously nice setup I really want to build a better machine too, I already have a big enough Hard Drive just saving for a Processor and Mobo. Thank god tax returns are coming soon biggrin.gif

I had a socket 754 AMD64 before, I went almost low end on that set-up... When I found a buyer for that PC ( for a good price ), I took the opportunity.

Putting this PC together, there's not much to upgrade now. wink2.gif

I went cheap on the HSF on purpose though... biggrin.gif

my god apex, your rig is godly.

I've got a shitty rig from back in the late 90's. The only reason it operates half decently in this day and age is because it was ahead of it's time back then.

I sooo need a new rig. Here are problems i have with my rig if anyone would care to read my sorrows. sad.gif

1. Wide assortment of spyware problems
2. a retarded early pentium 3 processor (cant remember the speed)
3. 64mb ram? That's ridiculous, right?
4. my harddrive is max 13 gigs - i've deleted so many files in order to keep it so that i maintain half of that in free space.
5. INITIAL D videos cause my computer to crash.
6. my CD and CDR drives make loud noises when they are reading.
7. my fan makes an even loader noise.
8. even my tv card is starting to give me choppy images.
9. Im so cheap, in order to watch DVD's on my computer, i place the DVD into my PS2 and hook it up to my TV card. sad.gif
10. I dont have any computer games cuz im afraid my comp will get messed up sad.gif
11. My sound card or speakers must be messing up because when i set the volume control dial to the neutral R-L position, only one speaker works.

I probably have the worst computer out of everyone here on the forum. sad.gif

my monitor is crap too it's got colour distoritions on the left down corner. my keyboard has seen better days... though it still works fine.

The only thing decent on my computer is my mouse.

Spyware problems :

Download Lavasoft's AdAware ( it's free wink2.gif ) and run it.
Then download Spybot S&D ( also free ), and run that.
Finally , download AVG ( antivirus, and you guessed it, also free ) and run that... wink2.gif

Should fix all of your spyware problems.

Monitor problems :

Take a small magnet, like a fridge magnet, and starting at the center of the screen, make a really long outwards spiral, this should get rid of the discolouration ( unless you have access to a degaussing coil laugh.gif ). Maybe the screen has a degauss button? If it has one, just press it... Some older monitors don't degauss automatically. Also, make sure you don't have anything that creates amagnetic field near the monitor ( like speakers wink2.gif )

Note : Do not try the above technique unless you're sure of what you're doing... It can make the problem worse...

Here's my CarPC trunk cover mod i almost finished about 2 weeks ago, I got the most part of if done, I need to finish up some of the underside and some minor details, but I'd figure i'll post some completed pics. I should have taken more but I was going to wait until the next day, but I didn't have time to unfortunately.

Cause I use a PC in my car...

until about a month ago, it used to be in a suitcase that i custom built, it was in the suitcase for about 2 and a half years (it'll be 3 years in November they I'll of had a CarPC, in one shape or another, in my car). It survives my driving fine biggrin.gif

Posted by: Nd4SpdSe Oct 2 2005, 02:20 PM
depends, I've has mixed opinions, the lady that game me my loud exaust ticket has no issues with it at all, but the screen isn't blocking anything, it just looks like it since I took the picture farely low, but i made it so it doesn't sit any higher than the dash when it's adjusted for passengers, for the driver, it's lower and tilted.

Besides, it's almost like the cops have their laptops anywho.

I went blue for the CarPC cause that's the theme for the car, but the desktopis green for my AMD theme.

I swear by fiberglass cutting wheels, even the "heavy-duty" ones break too easilly.
As for paint, one word....Tremclad

i never understood why people needed a pc in their car.... ?

Well, back when i started the CarPC project over 3 years ago, we didn't have no cheap one device solutions. The DVD playing decks were like $2000+, and I don't believe they did GPS either.

This is the ideal solution to be able to to everything any device can, plus it's more powerfun and upgradable using regular off-the-shelf computer components, depending if your the driver, or the passenger. Ideally you don't wanna do stuff like watch movies while your driving, that's just stupid, but the passenger can, or I can when I'm parked. Have you ever sat around and waited for someone? I did just this Saturday, I arrived at a tim horton's parking lot not only 30min early, but she was ended up runing about 30min late...too bad my monitor has been out for repair since i brought my car in for paint, 3-4 days, more like 3 f**king months.

This is the current list of functions
-GPS (Streets & Trips '05, Mappoint '04 with 3rd party Voice Nav and IGuigance 2.1)
-MP3 (I have ALL my Mp3's I own, plus I never have to burn CD's again, no skipping anymore either)
-TV Tuner
-Downloaded Movies
-DVD Player
-Pass-through for PS2, or any console system, or any analog video system, VCR biggrin.gif
-Emulators (NES, SNES, SEGA, PS1, MAME, etc)
-Burn CD's (You have no idea how many time I've copied CD's in my parking lot, I keep blank CD's in the car just in case for this reason)
-Rip music CD (Hey, I like that CD/song, can I borrow your CD for a few minutes wink2.gif)
-Download pics from my Digital Camera
-Burn those pics to CD for friends.
-Wireless card for WI-FI hot spots (unsecure routers, or truck stops, partipitating McDonalds, etc)

In the hopefulyl near future, I hope to have a stand-alone management system for the car, and have it interface though the computer.

The benefits to a CarPC (well, mine in particular)
-Easy repair and upgrades using off-the-shelf components
-Easy to read a 15" screen than a smaller 7", maps are more clearer and it requires less off-the-road attention
-Not proprietary
-I can use any piece of software I wish, configure it any way possible.
-Multiple interfaces, Serial, Parallel, USB, Firewire, Bluetooth, basically anything possible, except Cardbus
-No limitations on choise of performance (160GB of storage whistling.gif )

Other possibilities
-HDTV (if i wanted to, but i don't watch TV that often)
-Network gaming (between other CarPC players)
-Wireless between car communications (bah, screw FRS biggrin.gif)
-Voice commands (Kinda setup)
-Recording conversations with cops (Kinda setup, but never have done it, you know, in case you get the ass cops)

Nice stuff!

Always wanted to do something like this...

Weird question, how do the hard drives hold up? >_<

Posted by: Nd4SpdSe Oct 3 2005, 07:54 AM
It's great fun to have one, I honnestly almost can't live without it, it drives me nuts not having a GPS (i've gotten off route so many times, most no thanks to the construction on the 401) and using, *gasp*, CD's. after I did one, my friend, who always wanted, we did one in his *mint* '86 prelude early last year, and we just finished putting one in his work Civic this week.

Honenstly enough, absolutely no problem. My first hard drive was a Maxtor 40GB, bought it brand new and was used it for a year in the carppc, it went though a winter as well. After i upgraded to an 80gb and moved it to my sisters computer, in which it died just under the 3 year warranty. Weither is was due to being in the carpc, or just regular hard drive failure, it's hard to day, but it was out of the carpc for almost 2 years before it decided to die. The 80GB is still running strong in my main machine as a 3rd drive, that went though a winter as well (The last winter m Mx-3 will ever see, it was stored away for the first time last winter), That drive was used since I replaced the 40gb until I upgraded to a 160gb back in spring cause it was easier than try to backup all that information cause i wanted to format.

One thing i make sure to do is have the drive mounted on the side, just as a precaution, so if i hit a hard bump, the head wont slam against the platters...the only time the hard drive didn't like it is when i forgot to bungee the suitcase (standing up) to the back of the trunk and hit the brakes fairly hard and it slam down against the trunk floor, than the computer your freeze up, but those are isolated incidences, driving itself has not caused any problems.

LCDs are suppose to be easy on the eyes and it's good for people wit sensitive eyes. CRTs are the best for gaming, plus it has higher refresh rates then LCDs and LCDs are not good when installing reforce refresh.

My wife runs dual monitors. One 17 inch CRT and one 17 inch LCD.

APX- Don't let anyone get down on your CRT..they are inherently better than LCD's for several reasons. The only things I can think of off hand in favor of LCD's is they're a bit easier on your eyes and they're much lighter and space saving. That said...I'm glad I bought an LCD..now that I've gotten used to it I really dig it smile.gif

One thing to keep in mind is the native resolution of the LCD itself, if you game on your PC , then the response time is not as important as the ability of you vid card to push that resolution at a decent framerate.. wink2.gif

completely agree.

since I no longer play FPS, my 16ms (60hz) refresh is perfectly fine.

I don't like how that 6-pin power connector is hanging near over the CPU fan. Perhaps you should fasten it together with the other connectors?

meh

I would but believe me, I have nowhere to tuck/tie it; my ENTIRE tower is full..

plus I left it there for future video card expansion... that way I dont have to tear my whole box apart to find that one connector...

lol my second monitor is only used as an entertainment module for playing anime and movies Its actually right in front of a sofa so when im playing something I can relax with a cold drink and some snacks (theres a mini bar fridge stashed next to the sofa.

Actually I got used to having the monitor in the corner so its okay with me

All prices from newegg ( although I don't use them ) :

DFI SLI-DR ( refurbished ) : $107 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813136157R

DFI Ultra-D ( Retail ) : $135 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813136152
( I know it's more than your 108 limit, but it's a really nice board, essentially an SLI-DR w/o SLI )

The one BOZZY posted is this one:

ASUS A8N-E - $109.99

Yes, do not get the NEC 3550A, the firmware is horrible for it no matter what updates they do with it. We had a bunch of computers conflicting when burning data. It locks up a lot and locks up the burning program. I'd just stick with the Pioneer 1100.

I assume you're talking about the official NEC firmware and not the modified firmwares? Because the modified firmware is by Liggy...which is known to be very good. I personally would'nt buy any optical drive other than the NEC, for price and performance they can't be beat.

Actually, we did try the modified Firmwares, still has problems compared to the legitimate 1.05 NA/JP/GER updates.

Also, I know NEC is very good, but so is Plextor (If you got money to spend) and Pioneer. It always seems to me that NEC and Pioneer tend to leap frog each other in competition.

IMO no. I have an NEC myself and have bought them for friends as Birthday presents etc. Whenever someone asks me what kind of DVD burner they should get for their PC I always recommend NEC. Here's a link to a firmware page that has tons of firmwares for various NEC drives including the one you're buying:

Posted by: Dat Chau Dec 11 2005, 09:31 PM
Okay. When you buy a NEC-3550A, you will likely have the firmware version 1.03, especially if you buy it around this time. Through my experience working at the computer store, I've seen the 3550A lock up during burning with various software such as Nero, Alcohol 120%, and CloneDVD. I am not sure if Casey has actually used it before, but recently at the store I work at, it seems to have problems burning about 60-75% of the way through.

When you're upgrading firmware, all you have to do is make sure you do it in safe mode so there's no actual background programs running, and make sure that is the only drive connected to the high-density IDE cable. Also make sure that the drive is set to master (obviously). After doing the firmware update, restart your computer back into normal mode and the firmware should be up to date.

Posted by: DeeBo Dec 11 2005, 09:36 PM
So is there any other DVD Burners out there that will work good? Under fifty dollars though.

Hmmm....That's not how I do firmware flashes, but I guess that's why Baskin Robins makes 31 flavors smile.gif As far as the 3550, no...I have not used that particular model. It received 5 star reviews at Newegg.com and countless other reviews I've read have called it another triumph for NEC. The only people I've read about having problems with it so far are you and Mac users.

Well I've read the reviews, and yes there are some negative cons on the second page. We've been having the majority of those comments put there. And no we haven't been using Apples to put these in. Apples don't deserve NEC's. They can stick with their Samsung, and LG in the corner.

I would say that 19 out of 20 reviews being stellar for this drive would be enough to sell me on it. I don't know why you guys are having problems with the ones you have. I suppose you could've gotten a bum batch or something.

Probably, but I do have to say, I have an NEC 3540-A and it runs like a beauty. I still think that the DVR-110 are pretty good as well. I just don't like the unbearing stupidity of updating firmware for something the Japanese should of found out about before letting it out on the market. They know better than this wink2.gif

Found two motherboards that are in your price range that seem okay...

Asus A8N-VM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131571

Includes video onboard, which is a decent option if you don't have enough money for a video card ATM...

Asus A8S-X
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131525

Only problem with this that I can see is that it doesn't support SATA II... It also includes S/PDIF Out port and Gigabit LAN... which the other board does not support...

Posted by: Möbius Dec 12 2005, 08:53 PM
$89 and under? >_< That's going really low for a 939 + PCIe mobo... sad.gif

For that price range, try to find this board:

Chaintech VNF4 Ultra
Should be going for about 89 at most retailers, but it's kind of rare as it's really popular...
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=241589

These guys have it at a higher price... $97.02
http://www.us.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=13861&vpn=VNF4%20ULTRA&manufacture=CHAINTECH%20COMPUTER

Shop around on the net, if you can find it for $89, grab it for sure... wink2.gif

That Chaintech one actually looks pretty decent... Nothing too special about it, just a reasonable, normal motherboard... aside from it being rare (due to its popularity) according to the Carver.. tongue.gif

Actually it was longer than that, I got it just before Socket 939 came out, which I was quite angry about, I tend to always buy stuff just before a better version of it comes out, but anyway it plays all the current games well, I might do a mass upgrade when I have money.

but we were talked out of it and talked into... this

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (item # N82E16819103735)
OCZ Gold Series Dual-channel 1GB (2x512MB) DDR2 800MHz RAM (item # N82E16820227046)

BFG GeForce 7300 GS 256MB video card (item # N82E16814143050)
Samsung Floppy Drive (item # N82E16821103203)

The list of parts was given to us by a friend of my sister's. We may look for a different case, but the parts sound pretty good to me, and all part numbers are from Newegg.com if anyone wants to check them out in further detail.

XP is fairly good at detecting the max resolution of most 'tv screens' as long as it detects the monitor correctly within Windows. I had no problem with the Westinghouse LCD TV and the DVI connector. Picked up the resolution like a charm.

The fans were possible to set up that way, because the HSF can orient in any on the 4 directions. I just pointed it to the rear to push the air out. wink2.gif

The temp panel is part of the case, a nice feature, it even tilts up and down. The probe itself is on a wire, it can be put anywhere.

Wow, nice, the place I go to charges $125, not including tax and shipping, and no window.

The reason why I go there though is because it's a local store (and most of their cases are cheaper than Fry's), so I can browse and order online and go there to pick it up, so no shipping, and we all know how shipping costs for cases are a pain in the butt pinch2.gif
