Haha... too much stuff to read. I just go with what is recommended by the manufacturer.

But this SAYS that it's not always the best choice. It's a VERY interesting read... I thought so unsure.gif

From my experience the older the engine, thicker the oil. Newer engines go thinner. Just my 2 cents from owning 70's Mazda's smile.gif

Tried and true...

I experimented with oil weights and I tried 10-30 and the car ran the same really, not much of a difference other than a lifter tick...

With 10-40 the car doesn't tick until like 500 miles after the 3000 suggested miles.

I run 10W-30 in the GT-R right now, will switch to a 20W-50 or Eneos 0W-50.

Wouldn't 20-50 be too heavy?

Depends, all the guys who run GT-Rs here and in japan recommend 20W-50 for turbocharged cars, especially the RB which suffers from oiling issues.

Until i can tear the motor down and really inspect things, better to be safe than sorry.

I run 15W50 in the grale myself, the manufacturer's recommended weight is 15W40.

Oh ok, well the oil issues would call for it I guess. I'm just thinking to myself if the oil would be too thick...

Any specific reason they use 20-50 for turbocharged cars?

i didn't read the article or anything

but i myself, run 20W-50 on my car

it works much better for rotaries, kinda funny really, all to often i have see cars smoke with 10W-40, then switched to 20W-50 and they dont smoke anymore

A "multiviscosity" oil is simply an oil that has been rated using both tests. Nothing magic about it, except that sometimes the composition of the oil has been tweaked to flatten the viscosity-temperature curve.

I think that doctor have done the Phd on the motor mechanism and the oil used in there. Basically thats really amazing theory and I like it because by reading that article I have increased my knowledge about the motor and the use of oil in there.

Well, from my personal experience, I played with 5 different oils in my Supra; Castrol GTX, Valvolyne SynPower, AMSOil, Royal Purple and Quaker State dyno oil.

No wonder your Supra had problems, you fed it horseshit. 4 of those 5 oils are complete garbage.

I'm curious to know which of those you don't consider trash.

I personally think almost all oil is crap these days. Give me some non-api approved dinosaur muck over royal purple anyday. I've got Valvoline 20w-50 in my 635csi and it seems to run cooler than it did when I got it.

Anyways, which oil do you actually approve of?

GTX is semi-decent if you have a motor that bleeds like a stuck pig. It's not great, or even good for that matter, but it will allow you to make the thing function w/out pissing out too much oil.

Mobil 1 is the only thing I'll put in my vehicles. 40 in the Corolla, 50 in the Volvo.

I like Mobil1, but old flat tappet engines=hate api approved oils. I refuse to use any oil with that little seal on it. Casterol makes a 5w-50, I really want to see how that works.

I use Mobil 1 in all my vehicles, except the Grale. That gets Motul 300V. smile.gif
