Nice anime with the usual Shinkai Makoto visual porn, but that's about all. The premise was interesting, but it sort of scattered towards the end. The ending was meh. I was expecting something Shinkai-ish.

It was aiight ~ I have a few things against it though:

・ Whoever salaryman/OL at Toho subbed this movie has no clue how to translate.
・ The Radwimps emo music sucks high-grade Planters nuts.
・ Feels like Shinkai is mimicking Miyazaki; story, cinematography, and even down to character designs.
・ The whole movie feels like a boring Nihao My Concunibe... would've much rather watched the old Ranma films again instead.
・ The bland milquetoast plot, characters, and voice actors make me wanna eviscerate myself just sitting through this wishy-washy movie.
・ The movie is aimed at girls... no not real girls, just emo-kids that were born in the late 90's and like 21 Pilots.
・ Shinkai should go back to making Eroge backgrounds and colouring Minori tits, this movie is mega bland like a whitewashed watercolor painting of sea foam.
・ Kawajiri, Tomino, Miyazaki, Nabeshin, Shinbo, Leiji, Hideaki, Otomo, Oshii, Kon, you name it all better/less boring filmmakers than Shinkai.
・ The movie needed more fanservice.

Otherwise... it was aiight ~ not worth the http://cdjapan.jp/product/TBR-27260D collector's edition plastic it was printed on though. Overrated and definitely not a 10.

Watch it once... twice with your significant other before copulating. Then throw it out the window & wash the insipid aftertaste with Gundam Thunderbolt before going to bed.

5/10

xiao seems to feel very strongly about this subject...

I've always said, Kawajiri's my Miyazaki... then I realized his boring flicks were intended for kids, so I started warming up to them, my favourite being Kiki's Delivery Service. Shinkai is good, particularly when it comes to those indigo/violet twilight visuals, like Kyon mentioned.

But I hate the melodramatic emo get in touch with your feelings undertones of his films. The emo I'm a boy but I understand girls' feelings music by Radwimps, the bland character designs, the whitewashed color-palette that looks like everything was ran thru a plus +50 brightness negative -25 contrast filter, the so nice/milquetoast voice actors that talk like if they've just had a Lisa Frank lobotomy, and the way the whole film was made to appeal to emo weeaboo tweens ~

If Kawajiri's films are meant for guro sci-fi psychopath pervs, and Miyazaki movies are meant for Disney-raised 9 y/o kids... then Shinkai's movies are meant for the so nice it hurts avant garde emo kids posting on LJ. It's a nice film, but it's overrated as fuuuuuuuuuuuuuu~ tongue.gif

If you wanna watch a better artsy film, I'd put Kon's Paprika waaay over Your Name.

I totally forgot about this, you're right, the subs were garbage in at least a few places. I'd paraphrase the ones I remember but yeah, I noticed it too.

You could tell right off the bat that it was a native Japanese translator, rather than an English one. Not just that, even native Japanese translators working for cutting anime companies like Crunchy Roll, Viz, Funimation, or Madman know when to take liberties and when to be literal. But this seemed like it was translated/subbed by someone working in the live action Japanese film industry, rather than anime.

The glaring subs that caught my eye was when her little sister was saying "Onee-chan" which contextually would've sounded better if she called her "sis" or "big sis" ~ but they went with "Mitsuha" which made it sound akward as ferk! laugh.gif

Some other spots in the movie had the same thing happen.

I was being a being a bit hard on the film only cause people over-hyped it like if it's the 2nd coming of Miyazaki haha... but it's a good date movie or for a rainy day. ^^;

Indeed, Paprika was great. However, the best one, imo, was Kon's Magnetic Rose.

Also a good cozy date movie with thematically similar elements!

i saw 5cm per second on YT as i heard it was down to earth movie in its portrayal of Japanese life. it was hard to watch when the 2 of them were trying to meet each other after the time she left to move to another place. they say the JPN public service is always on time unless weather gets in the way.....

I felt heavy in heart after watching this movie, kind of broken as well. Sad anime movies are really depressing... crying2.gif

I watched it when it first came out. Love the story and how accurate they drew the places.
