Hey guys & gals.

I am looking into buying my mum a computer for her birthday, I wanted to get her a laptop but they are kind of pricey for me at the moment. And I noticed that I can get a netbook from $200-300 and I wanted to know how do they compare to a regular laptop ? Besides being smaller in size and having a smaller processor. All she will be using it for is web browsing. I just wanted to make sure it will be able to pick up my connection from my wireless router, and I know the newer models have built in wifi. So is it worth it to pick one up or should I just go for a reasonably priced desktop ?

Oopsie Kamui... Moved to "Computers & Technologies".

Well, In the 200-300$ range... you best bet is to check your eltronic retailers and try to find the model you might want. And, habitually, in those price ranges... Windows doesn't come along (add ~100$ for Windows 7 Starter). Otherwise, you are stuck with Linux or will have the I-NEED-TO-DIE OS Windows (Dead)XP.

Having a budget of 300-400$ would be easier to find and Windows 7 Home Premium would come along.

Brand wise... I suggest Asus, Toshiba (if they ever do netbooks) and HP.

Here is one by Compaq I found on Newegg.com :

If you buy her a netbook, buy her a wireless USB mouse too, the touchpads on those things are utter garbage.

Good point. I hate touch pads... emergency only hardware...

Netbooks are nice for browsing and doing a few documents. If possible check and ensure that the one you get has an SSD instead of a HDD - I've seen situations where persons take for granted that the machine is so small and the HDD's go bad due to various things - squeezing, bumping (dropping). Also, if you're sure she's not going to do more than browsing and such then maybe one of them with Linux would suffice? If not then Windows for the familiarity.
