Do you guys still buy dvds? Or most people have already move on to BluRay?

I myself still buy dvds mainly because I don't have a player that plays BluRay. My question is: I found out that recent production of DVD has less special features than the BluRay counterpart; correct me if I am wrong. Even DVDs with 2-disc special edition contains less extras than the BluRay version.

I am looking forward to the Avengers DVD, but found out from Amazon that the complete version with extra footage, deleted scenes, and stuff are only available on the BluRay bundle. Same goes with the Iron Man 2 DVD I bought in 2010; The 2 disc special edition is a joke compare to the BlueRay bundle

Yeah, most would say it's not a big deal; but I always love special features and extra stuff a DVD offer.

What do you guys think?

I think Blu-rays are cheap enough to buy over DVDs. I don't buy either, but if I did, it'd be Blu-ray. Why pay for decent quality, when for just a little bit more, you can have excellent quality?

I avoided buying blurays for the longest time because I didn't have a player--and more importantly, I didn't have ony in my computer. Finally got a PS3 and still avoided buying them. I actually do own one now--the last two episodes of Doctor Who season 4--but nothing else. There are blurays I want, sure...but I've always felt that since I use my desktop most, I'd want a bluray drive for it before I get into buying them. And if I'm gonna spend money on a drive, it better damn well be a writer and not a reader. Once the price drops into the $60-or-less range for those I'll grab one.

Given the choice, though, I'd buy a bluray over a DVD nowadays. I haven't really bought much in terms of video as of late, but I'd certainly want blurays over DVDs. Much better source material.

I basically have the same point of view as N1. I avoided buying BluRays for the longest time since I didn't have a player and I didn't want to shell out a ton of money for one, but thankfully there was a Sony player on sale a while back and we totally picked up a nice BluRay player for 60 bucks, we have a few movies but those are the ones that my dad deems are a must have. I don't make enough cash to spend on BluRays that I want since they are pretty damn pricey, but the DVDs I play on the player seem to have better clarity or something weird like that, you know what I mean?

These days a lot of big releases come with Blu Ray/DVD/Digital download packs so its getting a little bit harder to buy a "just" DVD copy of a movie, with that said I'm a big Audio/Videophile so I've been buying Blu Rays of movies I really want since for me I can really tell the difference between the two.

I only buy BR if it's something really worth the money.

The LOTR BR box set, for instance, was worth it. Bargain bin shit like Step Up 3 is not worth it.

Typically, I care about the movies that the directors really seem to give a shit about when releasing it on shelves. A Star Trek set on BR is going to be a solid investment, because you know that Paramount will give you your money's worth. The latest FRed movie, however, will be a throwaway because it's a terrible movie that the studio obviously doesn't care about. It's just something put on a BR disk simply to make more money from dumb kids.

Oh, speaking of Star Trek bluray sets, I gotta hand it to CBS Digital for being awesome. When the TNG Season One set hit shelves it had several episodes that were missing visual effects, had horribly-mastered audio or both. Rather than just go DEAL WITH IT they immediately apologized, admitted the errors, and began a disc replacement program for free. Retailers had their stock revoked and new shipments were sent out. That they were willing to fix their mistakes so openly gives them huge props in my book!

For reference, if anyone in the US/UK is looking to buy a set and wants to know if it's the fixed version, the fixed versions have a red delta-shaped symbol on the box spine. The Australians will be getting the fixed version day-one.

Unfortunately, while Season 1 was $60 to preorder... it's now up to $79 on Amazon. Season Two is up to $115. I have to wonder if the sharp increases in cost are a result of the disc-replacement program.

@r3d$unz: Yeah, lately a lot of movies are Bluray/DVD in one box, and fortunately the price difference is negligible to nonexistent. That's a great buy in my book... you get the DVD for now if you don't have the hardware just yet, and the bluray for the future when you won't have a choice and move into the wonderful world of HD.

BR is excellent for video and for storage in comparison to DVD. At current in my country DVDs are WAY cheaper - it's like USD$10 for a spool of 50 (plastic wrapped with no spindle) while a single DVD9 costs like USD$5. Since that's where it's at I haven't even bothered to check the price of BR blanks. What I do is make dual copies of my stuff on DVD5 since they're much cheaper.

Having a choice with something like ST:TNG I'd go BR as there's lots of other features. Would be expensive for me tho - as my policy with that would be exactly the same as with all my other discs...........keep the originals safe - burn copies and watch/use the copies. Don't want anything to happen to my originals.
