About time we have a thread for astrophotography. I recently purchased a EF 70-200mm f/4L telephoto lens and let me tell you, it's worth every single penny. I'll start off with a plain moon shot, but be creative and post up yours. It doesn't have to be any particular celestial body. It could be just the night sky under long exposure. smile.gif

user posted image

Some comments: the image is 100% crop and straight from the camera RAW. It is wide open at its f/4 aperture at 200mm. ISO 100 and exposed for 1/400 of a second. For more info, check the EXIF information. No post processing other than the "in-camera" sharpen function was carried out.

And like I said earlier it's the same lens that you might buy, and this is just a sample of what it can do. tongue.gif

EDIT: Here's the shot that I took last night of star trails from my roof looking over my backyard. smile.gif It was only about a 5 minute exposure because my batteries died and I couldn't hook it up to an external power source. sad.gif The colors are edited in Photoshop, and I took out one star trail. I'll post up the original which isn't too good later so I can get some help.

I think the vignetting is actually a nice effect in this image. Some people like to darken the corners of an image to make the subject stand out. But it seems like the vignetting effect is permanent no matter what settings you use. I am 100% sure it is just the lens. Get a better piece of glass when you have accumulated enough money. You will see the difference. But for now, this lens is a good starter to begin shooting with DSLR. smile.gif

For astrophotography, you will need a very sturdy tripod and a shutter release cable to minimize any unnecessary camera movement. The color in this photo seems pretty rich and the contrast is good. I am still puzzled as to why the light trail is not smooth. It's rather jagged edge. It could be caused by the wind I think.

Funny story, lol. I was actually on my roof, so it was pretty freezing cold and I called my friend and talked to her while my camera was taking the picture. I didn't want to leave my camera on the roof because if something had happened I couldn't be there to prevent it. So I was actually walking around the roof behind the camera so that probably rattled the camera a smidge. whistling.gif

Here's the original. sad.gif :

EDIT: I bought a cable shutter release for my camera so hopefully that will help me a lot with my shots from now on. smile.gif

Hey everyone, it's Mid-Autumn Festival today. The moon is very bright and the sky is clear. So I decided to give it a shot, literally.

This is 100% crop from the RAW file. Post processed in Digital Photo Professional 3.4. The image was taken with EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III on a Canon 40D. It was set up on a tripod, shutter release cable and mirror lock up for minimal vibration. Hope you enjoy. smile.gif

Ah, the thread I was waiting for. Would a Samsung S85 be able to do this? I forgot the requirements for starshooting. I CAN take pics of the moon, but I'm aiming for starshooting.

Hey folks, we just had a lunar perigee last night. Apparently, it is the closest to Earth in 15 years (since 1993) It is so big and bright that it lit up the sky and the ground like it's dawn. Amazing stuff.
