Alright, so i've had this computer for almost a year (December/Jan) and i've had no problem with it at all except for this one that happend about... 2-3 weeks ago.

It randomly shuts off (Not during a certain program/s) and would boot itself up a second or two later, but nothing starts up except for the fans that suddenly sound alot louder than normal. It's been doing this alot more lately now, about 2-3 times a day. I googled it (It's mainly "Computer shuts down, won't turn back on") and 90% of the answers are a PSU problem, so is it that?

Any thing I can do about it? (Kinda worried about opening it up and touching it, thanks to my comp tech teacher scaring the crap out of me about sending a shock and killing the comp <.<)

Thanks. sad.gif

Not having a lot of information to go on, it does sound at this point to be the PSU ( guessing that the PSU barely has enough left in it to supply the PC with juice, so when the fans try to turn up to cool down the otherwise probably unrelated heat, it drops the voltage on the PSU low enough for it to reboot ).

A PSU tester would confirm, but you probably won't have enough use for it to justify the purchase. PSU and PC specs please to confirm? cool.gif

I would clean the computer off 1st (scratching the overheating issue). Then, if it happens again, then, I would try another PSU.

Fans being abnormally loud on reboot is a BIOS fan controller/temperature sensor issue, just FYI. It can happen on dirty reboots, so as long as it doesn't do it on a cold startup it should be fine.

Randomly shutting down sounds like a PSU issue. Some good ways to test if you don't have a PSU tester:

-Noticed any odd smells? When my Slimline's PSU went south, the room smelled like ozone because copper was fusing. If you smell something weird like that, it's hosed.

-Does your BIOS have a temperature monitoring page? I'd give that a look to see what temperatures you're seeing. Leaving it there for a while is also a good test. If it reboots randomly when you're in BIOS, you can be sure it's a power supply problem because no software is loaded that would force a reboot.

-Have you disabled automatic restart on system failure in Windows? It's possible that the computer is not rebooting randomly, but is instead blue-screening and rebooting so quickly that it goes unnoticed. Disabling automatic restart means that a blue-screen will stay a blue-screen until you force the computer to shut down. If this hasn't been done, it should be #1 on your list.

-If your motherboard has onboard video, try removing your GeForce video card and running from the onboard. If the problem goes away, it's possibly a power supply issue as well. Graphics cards take quite a bit of juice, easily the most power-hungry thing in your case (and the easiest to test assuming you have onboard video available).

That's all that comes to mind for now. Check your Event Viewer too, see if there are any errors besides "Unexpected shutdown," such as "Bugcheck." Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Event Viewer --> System. wink2.gif

Thanks donxors, unchecked the auto restart, so if it happens again, i'll tell ya guys what happens.

EDIT: It just did it about 5 minutes ago, opened it up, CPU fan is the one that makes all the noise, and just talked to don, it is the PSU. sad.gif

I recommend a Corsair HX series if you are looking for replacement. Best bang for buck right now on the market, IMHO.

I haven't been tracking the market lately so I'd go with whatever Mobius recommends. yes.gif

I agree with Mobius here. I would add Antec's PSU's too!

I thought Antec's PSU aren't as reliable as Corsair's or Thermaltake's?
But that's just my personal opinion, I'd definitely go with Corsair if I have the money.
It is a brand that will never let you down.

Agreed with everything so far. Unless the PSU is dead, do you know anyone with a PSU tester that could verify that it's actually going or on the way out? Do you feel comfortable opening it up to check for the token bad capacitors or such?
