I'm using a Canon LiDE 220. What's the best scanner out on the market under 1000 USD with the best in-hardware descreening? ohmy.gif

I mean I can always just go to CPD and do it with the DocuColors... but anything non-industrial for home/office by any chance? I had a great HP scanner decades ago... dunno how well they hold up on the descreen world now though? unsure.gif

That I honestly don't know. I only know that my scanner doesn't have a good one, and that while I was working for OD I asked the reps for HP, Canon and Epson and all three failed to actually give me feedback on which models had hardware-level descreening. I know they exist, but I can't tell you what current models come with that feature.

I know of some models that could do it, but they are not less than $1000 and they would not fit in a house. The printing company I used to work for had three massive Canon units that could do some amazing work, but their price tags were in the six-figure range and required Canon reps to fly in (fully paid by us, naturally) and supervise the installation. Canon officials, by the way, cost a lot of money to bring in, and we had them in constantly doing calibrations every other week.

Loud as fuck and it ate entire pallets of paper in minutes churning out copies, but the quality is worth it.

Well yeah, our copy machines at work I'm sure could do the trick, but there must be flatbeds with that sort of feature out there as well. Screen printing is still the de facto standard for color publications, so digitizing those prints is still very much relevant. I just wish there were a way to be sure without just buying a bunch of random scanners and trying each one.

Here's my list of upcoming albums I'll scan. The list may help you to see which albums are still needed.
All scans are in BMP at 400 ppp.
(The list will also help me to see what I've already scanned and what not.)

Everythings hosted in my Dropbox. I've got plenty of space there, so no worry about the scans getting deleted over time. However, if there's a dead link, send me a PM! I'll immediately get an email which is checked in real-time. So you can still contact me years after this post.

Sorry for double-posting.

Lebon, do you have any special settings for your BMP files?
When I downloaded your scans, I saw they are around ~60 MB with rar5. I was confused because 7zip usually compresses slightly better, so I tested a few settings.
Extra for this test, i installed WinRAR and tried something out. While I can compress your scans to ~60 MB with rar5 and even a few MB less (~57 MB) with 7z, my own scans can only be compressed at a ratio of about 55-60%.
So it must be something wrong with my BMP files. I'm using Photoshop to cut with standard settings when saving.
Your BMP files are around the same size as my ones but there must be a difference.

P.S.: You maybe should check my list above from time to time. I think no one noticed my uploads since I only edit the post every time.

Kira & the gang... I have a quick question for you guys cause I mainly work on Gimp and almost never dabble with bmp files isn't bmp basically the wave of image files and png the flac of them? Why don't you just use png as an export method instead of bmp, since there's no quality loss?

As to why Lebon's bmp's are probably bigger in file-size... it must be the bits-way he's exporting them 24 bits R8 G8 B8 is the common type, though I've no real clue what the actual difference between the 32 bits & the 24 bits bmp settings actually is

user posted image

Just export them as png's is my solution to the file-size reduction problem

I never thought about saving in PNG (even though it's my avorite image format) because Lebon stated on the first page, those files would be huge even in JPG/PNG.

So I just tested. Photoshop doesn't have these settings, insteat it's only "Compression: Fast / Best" and "Interlace: Yes / No".

The lyrics pages (~20 MB) were minimized to ~2 MB. Pages with many colors and few single-color areas like the CD back were minimized from ~13 MB to 8 MB.

I compared both the PNG and BMP by switching very fast between them and found no difference (I mean, that's how PNG works).

Guess my future scans will be made in PNG.

"They'd be huge even in a proper format" is the absolute worst excuse for saving in BMP I have ever heard, and thankfully you've found out just how ridiculous a statement that is first-hand. Finally some sanity in this thread.

We've even had a similar argument before I think, in the desktop thread about PNG vs. JPG screencaps.

Nowadays with fast internet & growing SSD's ~ it's all fair game, cause even wave rips as pretty relevant for DJ's. But as a general rule of thumb, especially for people running low-Gig drives & slow internet connections:

・no-compression jpeg's for imgur/forums
・no-compression png's for image archival/booru's

I do see a difference between jpeg and png images, especially when zooming up on Japanese lyrics for TL purposes; but ultimately I think true image beauty comes down to a good source. I've seen 1080p + low ppi jpeg DSLR photos look hella nicer than 600 ppi + ultra skyscraper banner rez scans ~ concerning macro-text that is. I think of bmp as a raw camera photo, I won't even touch it unless I'm running that shizz thru Gimp into a png.

Well yeah, but that's actually a different argument completely. In this case we're talking about an archival project, where it's actually a comparison of lossless formats. In this particular case, saving as a bitmap is completely ridiculous and useless because it's 2016 and we have compressible lossless formats like PNG that can handle such jobs much more efficiently.

The screencap thread was an argument over the utility of posting a 1:1 resolution lossless screenshot of your desktop when, clearly, that's completely retarded since your workspace is not a work of art. In that instance there's no reason to specify a lossless format because there is no need for archival, and in fact, you can probably even get away with halving your working resolution and no one will give a shit. It's a desktop screenshot, not a fucking digital copy of Starry Night.
