Initial D World chat was introduced to the forums in December of 2002. The first chat room used phpMyChat, a PHP chat room script that uses a mySQL database to store information. The script was integrated with the forums so members were able to use their current usernames to log-in to the chat room.
In less than a month, the phpMyChat link was removed from the board because the current host for the forums could not support the .php3 file extension that the chat room used. However, the problem would soon be resolved as the forums would be relocated to a new host in one weeks time. After the upgrade the link was added back to the top of the forum. However, phpMyChat's reign as IDW's official chat room would be short-lived as member's began suggesting to use AIM chat instead. Becaused not everyone had AIM, it was decided that both chat rooms would be used.
During Fall of 2003, the AIM chat link would be relocated to the member's bar while the link to phpMyChat would remain above the forums. At the same time, Insidious's Quotes Out of Context were shown next to the forum banner. The Quotes Out of Context used a script that would generate random quotes from chat sessions that people thought were funny.
In January of 2004, the board upgraded from IPB 1.0.1 to IPB 1.3, which the board still uses today. The Quotes Out of Context feature was lost from the upgrade. It was later added on to some skins as some members did not like it and eventually would be completely disabled. Another notable change from this upgrade is the removal of the phpMyChat link, which was soon replaced by images from sites affiliated with IDW. At this point, AIM became the official chat room location for IDW.
Initial D World Chat (IDW's AIM chat room name) was most active during the weekends. Any member could start up the chat room and mass invite members from IDW and the chat would continue throughout the night. This continued for the next three or four years until members started noticing that AIM became unstable.
Perry installed BlaB! Lite, an AJAX based web client, as a solution to the AIM issues. Its presence would be short-lived as the client restricted the amount of users to 10. IDW then migrated it's chat room to IRC, which has become the current official chat room of IDW. The chat is located in the
#idwf channel on the
IRC (Internet Relay Chat) has been suggested over the years by a multitude of members. However, many members were either reluctant to change or did not like the idea of using IRC. Still, some members either created their own IRC channel or joined other Initial D channels on IRC that were not related to IDW. In the end, after successful radio chats, IRC became the primary method of chatting amongst IDW members.
Currently there are members that lurk in the chat throughout the day. It is most active when there is an Initial D Radio Show on.
To join the chat, use our mibbit client or connect using an IRC client.
