I just noticed last night while driving to a buddies house yesterday that my rear drum brakes are getting a lot of drag. (I'm quite aware drum brakes are obsolete on smaller cars.) Around two weeks ago I bled my brake lines and put new fluid in during a lab session at school. After successfully bleeding out my system my group and myself proceeded with adjusting my brakes so my front brakes wouldn't be doing as much braking as it used to. After adjusting the rear drum brakes so they would do a little bit more work I also noticed that my E-Brake wouldn't rise as high as it did before.

With all of that being said does any one have the slightest clue of whats going on?


If anyone is wondering I'm driving around in a 1993 Camery LE as of now.

Since you don't say how you and your buddies did the adjustment, I'm going to go with whatever the heck you did to 'adjust' the brake system was done incorrectly. As I'm not familiar with your particular vehicle I can't really help resolve that issue, however. Hopefully one of the other tech gurus will chime in so I don't have to Google-dive for an FSM. whistling.gif

Did you over adjust the adjuster (har) in the drum? Its also possible that flushing the brakes actually brought out some corrosion that was in the lines and is messing with the cylinder.

Could be quite a few things. Going to have to check them all one by one and narrow it down- But id start with these.

I know that the self adjust arm in my Jetta's rear brakes can potentially be inserted upside down/backwards. If this is done, the unit can still be put back together but won't self adjust.

well got them looked and and re adjusted by the teacher again. So far so good.

Potentially you can put the shoes, and the self adjuster backwards...but if i were to do that i'd notice it since the spring that goes with the self adjuster would be held up against it.

I'm pretty sure he just overtightened the adjuster.

For the auto adjusting part, I'm sure most of the cars have that, as i had to just kept engaging and unengaged my 87' Fiero E-brake, so that the brakes could begin to grab. Then it was self adjusted smile.gif

I'm pretty sure the Teacher probably told them they over tighten it. either from the adjust inside the Drum brake or from the adjuster from in-between the Both brake drums.
