Ok, I have not personally seen this yet, but I saw a thread about this on another forum. Has any one else seen this?

Automotive section. [:

I wonder how this fad rolled around? The old BMW doesn't look too bad with the whole body rusted.

This is not the first time this was mentioned, but it doesn't make it any better to look at.

Why would anyone want to do this? confused2.gif

there's an STi somewhere in Ontario (Canada) with bedliner/rhino liner (that stuff you spray on the beds of pick uptrucks instead of paint) for bodypaint. I think the owner was tired of getting paint chips.

Perhaps thats a reason?

I think a clean car with a random rusted hood looks stupid, and I don't even like the idea of the whole BMW looking like that, but it still looks pretty mean from the front. thumbsup.gif

@WRX: Yeah, I know a guy in my town who did the same to a hardtop Geo Tracker. Mostly because the original paint looked like crap and the fenders were rusted out, but you would never know under a half inch of bedliner. laugh.gif

Look carefully. It's basically acting as weight, clamped onto what seems to be a aluminum string of sort going into the grill and out of it again to hold the other end of the license plate up laugh.gif

This has been out for a long time, it was basically done to copy the rat rods.

Also, The BMW in the first pic is the only one that can somehow pull the look, everything else is just crap.

I kinda like it. It gives the car some uniqueness. But mind you, I would never do it to one of my cars.

Thing is, the whole point of a rat rod is to have a car that can go faster than a BMW for less than the cost of one set of wheels for the same car.

Not THE BMW trying to look like one.

Sooooo f**kin true.

I do dig the look, as stated befor ein another thread, when it is done sparingly, or with some taste. That all-rust BMW in the first pic is pretty cool. However, the others are so far on the fail-o-meter that they ruin the entire look. Rust looks good on cars dating back at least 20-25 years ago. Anything else just looks like shit and it doesn't fit the style.

Oh, and the rat rod thing used to be like that AJ; now it's a joke.

Not to mention, rust is not what makes a rat rod.

edit: That's not a true rat rod, it's just a f**kin' piece of shit. smile.gif

Rat Rods do not have to have rust. The entire point of a rat rod is to take a good chassis, a good working, cheap engine, then build a car out of whatever else you could find and weld together out of a junkyard. A true rat rod will probably have some rust as looks are not important, they will also have visible welding seams. The biggest motive in Rat Rods is function over form. So, if these cars are trying to immitate Rat Rods, they horribly fail by doing the exact opposite. They already had function so they changed the form.
