And yet it makes a pathetic 130 HP rating and it goes 88 MPH...

85mph. I remember that in the movie they had to modify the speedometer in the cluster so that it could read 95mph in order for the needle to be able to get to 88mph. Otherwise it would just hit 85mph and not even beyond that.

EDIT: In order words, they changed numberings of the Delorean cluster.

It would do well over that. Every car sold in America in the 80's had to have an 85mph speedo, iirc. I know my friends 5.0 '86 Stang has one. So do all my friends Jeeps from the 80's.

Well yes it CAN go beyond 85mph. I used to own a 83' Cutlass Supreme and it would only read 85mph BUT, it can go beyond that.

But being a movie, it wouldn't look right. Maybe I should have cleared up what I said earlier a bit but you get what I mean laugh.gif

Yeah, even my brother's '94 Taurus has a 85mph "top speed". I buried it past that and the car still had plenty of power to give.

What the speedometer is just a plastic gauge; Law mandated throughout the 1970s and 1980s that speedometers gauge could display no more than 85mph, which is why with cars like the Mustang SVO, which had a speedometer gauge that displayed further than 85mph, had none of it's tick marks after 85mph labeled...

Of course, there's a difference between what the gauge says, and how the transmission is geared or whether there's a governor limiter or not...

Omni GLHS was the best.

They removed the stopper peg for the end of the speedo after 85. There was s small sticker put back at "0" that said 135. When you wound the needle back to 0, you were doing 135, and that car could do it.
