It's actually a misconception some people have. The very first kamikaze didn't kill themselves, they usually did their best to bail before letting their plane crash against the target. It was only when the Empire of Japan started losing the war that they resorted to more desperate yet awfully more effective measures.
That said, in Japan, unlike it happens in countries with a Christian tradition, suicide isn't stigmatised by either religion nor common law and, in fact, it is generally seen as a morally acceptable way of taking responsibility when you've majorly messed up. The practices of seppuku and hara-kiri were invented with that specific aim although nowadays hanging seems to be most common way of committing suicide in Japan. This is why I found weird that Kaori chose to slit her veins to kill herself....it's a very odd way for a Japanese woman to commit suicide. Unless Tsyta is right and she was just a very clumsy emo-girl.....  |
