So I'm pretty sure I can free up an extra horsepower, maybe two by putting a straightpipe in place of my stock muffler. I'm going to take a generic cherrybomb or something, because I'm too cheap to do this right and start at the headers. Mostly I want to do this because I believe my engine would sound better with no real restriction aft of the cat. Has anybody done this kinda thing? What were results? Also, feel free to talk about any special exhaust thing you want, I didn't notice a thread for it already.

This is what my car could sound like

Go with a Magnaflow instead of a generic cherrybomb, you'll like it better.

Yeah, I figured I would, but the cherry bomb costs less than 50 bucks, where the magnaflow would be around $130. Still worth it?

Side note, I'm giving serious thought to chipping my car.

You can probably find it for under 100 if you look. It sounds much better and is made from stainless steel.

Your headed down the wrong path with car mods. If you cant afford to do it right the first time you cant afford to do it period. Dont go for cheaper parts go for the good stuff. Eventually you will wind up with alot of broken shit because you bought the cheap stuff.

Besides do you really need a exhaust on your car?

FYI a I/H/E may free up 10HP if your lucky more like 8 or 9. Get a turbo kit or something with your money its worth the extra wait.

I'm not really after power here. All I really want is to turn the burble into a growl. My next car, however, is another story entirely.

+1 here. I don't really like how pedestrian my exhaust sounds. I've got a nearly identical sized engine to Cactus (I6 2.8L Toyota 5MGE, IIRC, the BMW 325 engine was a 2.7L), sounds a bit mean with my foot a bit down, and the stock muffler is about to die anyways. I'm thinking straight pipe as well, if SS exhaust pipe is dirt cheap.

Open headers? Man, I don't want to melt my getrag. I love that thing. Or I could pipe it out the side, so it burns off the shins of any police officer who comes up to my window after he pulls me over for being too loud.

if your going to do something and be cheap about it do it right and be cheap about it lol. atleast buy a header and performance EX maifold and go open dump, if you have a turbo it'll reduce the noise. lol

i don't know how it sounds on a bimmer but it sounds really good on a VG it sounds so much better if your actually making power though.

A BMW with open headers sounds like a squadron of Messerschmitts. And for the record, BMW actually makes cars for enthusiasts, so their engines breathe (intake and exhaust) about as well as they need too. Getting 3" plumbing from the header to the tip, with nothing inbetween, my car wouldn't see much of a performance gain at all. The same thing would be true if I took off my airbox. Mine, the one with the e on the end denoting economy and slowness, comes from the factory with a cold air intake. There's no way to do it right besides leaving it be.

All I want is to make it sound a little growlier. And since that won't net me any power, I want it to be cheap.

dude just save up and get a nice muffler you don't want a shitty muffler that makes your car sound like a piece of shit or sound like the ricer in F&F. if your gonna get a muffler do it right or just don't do it. however, it is your car you can do as you please with it.

if your just after sound just throw a K&N filter on there delete the cat or crush the honeycomb holes thing in the cat and a muffler that i imagine would be nice.

If I wanted bad advice, I'd ask my 14 year old brother.

But more to the point, what's the matter with glasspacks? Provided you have more than 4 cylinders, they actually sound pretty good. Loud, but that's the point.

Seems like he was giving legitimate advice in this thread, there was not really any reason for that kind of response. But hey, I calls 'em like I sees 'em.

He gave the same advice i did. Why do you want your car to sound like something its not? You trying to draw attention to yourself to make you feel better?
