Hello peeps,

So I just wanted to confirm something that seems weird with my HDTV and something which a Sony rep. told me was normal.

So I got my HDTV, 40" Sony 1080p, about 2 years ago. This particular TV is pretty decent except for one minor issue which relates to a display setting. Under the TV's display setting there is a Display Area option where you can set it to Normal, -1, -2 and Full Pixel. In quite a few cases I have had to set it to Full Pixel to display all the content (and subtitles) of a movie I was watching on this TV with the help of my PS3.

The problem is that whenever I set it to Full Pixel and either turn off the TV, switch inputs or turn it on, this setting is erased.

From reading online a lot of people seem to be saying that this is abnormal behaviour and there is currently no fix or firmware to correct this problem. I just spoke with Sony rep. who confirmed to me that not only is this the normal behaviour of the HDTV but also the common behaviour for all HDTVs.

I wanted to confirm with other HDTV owners on these forums whether this is actually the case or if my TV is just a lemon or something...

Your TV isn't abnormal. This is a normal issue on many HDTVs and one that is incredibly stupid. See, the issue is that most HDTV manufacturers prepare only for interfacing with game systems and video units. These devices are meant for TV-based content. When displaying full-frame content (fansubbed videos, PC output, etc), they need to be reset to accomodate (and some don't even have that ability!).

However, that is considered by most companies to be a non-standard use. Therefore, the setting it reset upon restart so the TV can be a TV again.

All you can do, really, is either do a lot more in-depth research into your next HDTV purchase (I doubt any store employees or user manuals will tell you what you need to know) or rally with others annoyed by this ridiculous setting to get a new firmware put out that adjusts the functionality.

Wow, so I guess it is a standard thing... Thanks for the advice... Next time I do buy an HDTV I will be careful and vigilant. It makes me feel worse since the TV I did buy was sort of on the spur of the moment exactly on this day 2 years ago... sad.gif

I had the same problem with my last tv, and the company essentially told me the same thing when I questioned them about it. My best advice is to go plasma next time since their settings are so basic that it's impossible to screw them up. laugh.gif

My HDTV saves what scaling setting i set it at. The settings are saved under its respective input, so that 1:1 ratio HTPC I have at input 5 wont affect the over-scaling i have for input 6.
