| Hey fellow IDWers, I'm interested in purchasing a video capture device of some kind to convert some old VHS tapes to a digital format. I'm unfamiliar with some of the brands I've come across so far, besides AverMedia, whose capture card I think I've used in the past at a previous job. I'm still doing my own research, but so far I'm a little confused as to which brands are good and whether there is any benefit of purchasing a USB-based external capture card over a PCI-Express internal card for my intended purposes. From what I've read and seen so far, it seems most of these devices are HDMI based and some include an adapter for component cable inputs. Would there be any loss in quality when using such a setup for my purposes? In my particular case, is it safe to ignore whether the device records up to and including 1080p or 1080i, since the resolution of the video I am capturing is less than 480i? My only other worry is whether or not my PC is capable of handling video capturing with these new capture (internal or external) cards. A few of the internal ones I've come across listed hardware requirements as being Core 2 Duo 2.4 Ghz or AMD Athlon X2 2.8 Ghz and a PCI-Express x1 port. My PC is an AMD X4 9450e 2.1 Ghz, which after looking it up I've learned it's almost a decade old, with enough disk space to spare, 4 GB of RAM, a PCI-Express x16 port that's taken up by my ancient AMD Radeon 5450HD and a free PCI-Express x1 port. Is there anything for me to worry about? I'm hoping some of you awesome folks would be willing to chime in with some advice and recommendations, it would be greatly appreciated. |

| Hi BOZZ. For moving from VHS to your PC - without it being up-scaled you won't get anything above what you're putting in.
