I played Arcade Stage 4 a while ago in the summer in Minnesota, but I usually choose Automatic, but when I decided to use Manual, and raced against Iketani (or Cole since that was the Tokyopop era), the car went slow and I gave up, and so I went back to Automatic. But how does Manual work, I don't know how to work it properly.

In version 4 you want to keep max rpm to avoid losing speed especially on hairpins and corners so you usually keep overrevving at gear 4 or 5.

If you're really new to manual..you have to shift up.

Since you've been playing with auto, you could just observe how your gear changes according to speed and the tachometer and learn from it. From IDAS4 to 8, you basically shift up as your tacho needle approaches the red band, but for better accuracy, look at the speed at which it changes.

When the tachometer needle is just about to reach the red zone, shift up. Rinse and repeat.

Conversely, when you drop down to a certain speed after corners, drop the gear again.
