Alright! So, I've finally modded far enough that I feel the need for a build thread. I picked the car up last May with 21,000 miles on her, with just a few nicks in the paint, and have since been working on making her mine. The end goal is a competent, quick street car - I admit she won't see a lot of track time as there isn't one reasonably close, but there's lots of back-road twisties around here that are great fun.

While she did start life as a Scion, I have no love of that brand, and don't really feel that's what the car is. As I started modding, I discovered that almost everything I pull off of the car or replace is branded "Subaru" - So I decided to call a spade a spade and badge her accordingly.

The STi badge won't be just for show after long - I have some goodies from JapanParts on order, and in the future an AVO turbo kit will back up the badge.

Mod list -

Wheels and Tires

FIVE:AD S7:F in Silver - 19"
Pirelli P-Zero Nero High-Performance Summer tires

Aero and Lighting

Five:AD spoiler - Firestorm Red
Buddy Club JDM tail lights
LED running light foglight replacements

Interior and badging

Cobb shift knob
STi badge
Subaru rear emblem
86 steering wheel cover-up badge
Subaru center trim cover

Performance

Top Speed catted UEL header
Top Speed down pipe
Top Speed over pipe
OFT
FA20Club air intake
Megan Racing front strut bar

================Future Mods===================

Racesing pulley kit
Reverse Lockout
Whiteline shifter bushings
Whiteline engine mounts
Rear trailing arms
Rear subframe brace
Brembo break kit
AVO turbo kit
TMIC + Intake hood

Personally I'm not a fan of throwing Subaru/STI badges on an FR-S, but if it makes you happy, knock yourself out.

Any idea what kind of power you'd be putting down with your current mods?

I'd like to hear the exhaust as well.

Also, I'm excited to see what it makes with the turbo kit, this should be a good thread!

Eh, I can understand the badging issue, but it seems so silly to call it a Scion when that's such a meh brand. And calling it a Toyota is fine, for the home market, but literally everything I pull off the car is branded Subaru. Example: My VIN number stickers have the Subaru logo on them. The heat shielding did too.

As for numbers being put down, I'm waiting to schedule a dyno. One of my exhaust gaskets on the down pipe either deteriorated or wasn't installed properly, so I have a very small (very annoying) exhaust leak. Also waiting on my OFT to get a proper tune on it before I do too much driving with it.

Lonely_Driver, what's wrong with the UEL? They provide more mid-range torque, where as EL headers tend to cater to the top end of the power band, which is where these cars make all their power anyways. The goal with the UEL is to eliminate the 3.5k to 4.5k torque dip issue.

Video will be coming as soon as the dyno tune happens sometime soon!

Don't get me wrong, I understand your reasoning. I just personally wouldn't do it, even if Subaru physically manufactured most of the car. If it bothers you that much to the point where you want to throw on Subaru emblems, is there a reason why you didn't just get a BRZ in the first place? Just curious.

I'd stay away from the avo kit personally.

I'd stay away from the avo kit personally.

Didn't want the upscale interior. Also did not like the front bumper nearly as much. Boomerang headlights also didn't do it for me.

Also: What's wrong with the AVO kit? I've not seen any bad responses over on ft86 club.

I used to have an avo turbo on the frs. It's good quality but the kit itself is too limited if your looking to make the car competitive. If you spend that much money you can get a full blown kit with a gtx30 trim turbo and have better results.

I have a really hard time beleiving that after owning a NA subaru and installing UEL header robbed a lot of power compared to the stock EL

If it were the case then most NA tuned engines would have UEL headers which they do not.

And from riding/driving local BRZ/FRS friends cars, the torque dip is mostly in the tune.

Eh, I disagree. Even untuned I can feel a considerable difference in the dip there. Also, you're also a Subaru owner, you can't tell me that you don't appreciate the Boxer rumble.

If I recall the argument between UEL and EL on these cars is largely just a matter of taste, with good examples from either basket producing relatively similar numbers. A good header and a tune seem to get these car reliably around 180ish whp (again, with neither one really proving reliably to be "superior" at all, anywhere along the power band), which for a car that had 160ish whp, that aint too shabby at all. Basically, if you like the subaru rumble, go UEL, if you dont, go EL. Tune the car. Profit.

The "dip" seems to be a harmonics thing with the stock intake/exhaust system. There a *lot* of controversy over what exactly is causing it, and even what exactly it is. Some call it a dip, some think its a bump in the lower section to give a bit more down low that doesnt carry through completely to the upper rpms. Some think its related to the injecetion set up (the timing at it jumps around from direct injection and port injection is in the same range). But it does seem a solid exhaust and tune held flatten it out (whatever "it" actually is) a lot (it still seems to be present, but not as present).

And if anyone has any good solid information on this, please cite it. I havent dug into it in awhile so im curious.

well disagree all you want but I can tell from experience that its worse.

As for appreciating the sound I'm indifferent, its fun for scaring or confusing people but a EL or twinscroll setup makes more power and is more effecient

Minor update:

Got the exhaust installed, awaiting a catback. Got it tuned for the catless downpipe and 93 octane only.

Also got my wheels and tires put on! Goodbye gaudy AD5 concept wheels!

Sexy stuff! I'd really love to see video of it in action. Out of curiosity, is this the same FR-S featured in your other thread?

Sure is. smile.gif Decided that, since that one devolved in to body kits and arguments about tail lights, I'd give it a proper build thread and just keep the updates here.

my limited vocabulary doesn't allow me to completely express how i feel about those tail lights, so short version is, EVERY frs/brz should run those tail lights. GOD I LOVE THOSE TAIL LIGHTS!

What's a thread in automotive if it doesn't have at least one argument about something that is a personal opinion?

Anyway back on topic. I love the rims! I'm still waiting for more pictures.

One could say that personal opinion is what created this thread in the first place, so the argument of "it was off topic" is rather moot.

That 5AD stuff just doesn't work on the 86 for me. It looks MUCH better now that you've got proper wheels on it.

I would just focus on suspension mods since it's a great handling car. Get some coilovers!! biggrin.gif
