Matters little if your knuckle sucks. I have a 240 knuckle in my Corolla, my wheels, if I want them to, nearly point perpendicular with the car.

'Grale is put away for the winter, but I'll post up when I take it out the first time. Pretty sure I'll at least come close.

I could in theory throw on a tiny aftermarket steering wheel, haha

Would that really decrease the amount of rotations?

I think just a close gear ratio steering rack would do the trick though (I has one sitting at home, in a box, waiting for my return to install it on me impreza). Cuts down the amount of rotations.

You ought to consider it, Stig. There are street and rally apps and the guy who manufactures these can build a rack to meet your needs.

As for my RX-R, I'm pretty sure being an itty bitty car, it probably has very few rotations... Can't remember how many off hand... All I know is that it surprised me how few rotations it takes from lock to lock vs. my impreza's stock steering.

You dont need a forum to tell you that the radius of a circle will not affect it's rotation. The only benefit is a quicker turn in.

I actually thought the same thing that the Stig though and ran the scenario through my head. Didn't add up, so I looked it up.

You're right, it's sorta of common sense.

Just checked my Vivio's turning from left lock to right lock.

2.5 turns.

I've just thought of something...

Lock to lock is only half the story. The other half is actual turn radius ( well, not turn radius, but the amount by which the front wheels turn off from center ).

2 cars that are ( for an example ) 2.5 turns lock to lock, one car might still have a "quicker feel" if those same 2.5 turns mean bigger wheel deflection from the straight.

I'd bet my wheel deflection is less per turn, but I'd also bet that my turn-in is much better.

i would say on mine probably around 2.5 (from memory, i drive a corolla)

do you guys turn you steering wheel while stationary? i personally hate when people do that, the only time my wheel moves is when the car is moving

Only time I turn the wheel while stationary is when the car is sitting on snow. LOL. My instructor used to slap my hand whenever we were practicing parking in a parking lot, if i turned the wheel while stationary.

There's nothing wrong with turning the steering wheel when stationary, especially if you have just serviced your steering rack, and want to get rid of any air in the system

Yeah, its causes "minimal" wear, and if you dont have power steering, it can be a pain in the ass. Of course, as we all know, its easier to turn the wheel when the cars moving, but to get minus points for doing it in a driving test.... thats just anal

As for on topic, can't remember, but mine was something silly like 1.9 turns I think... Its less turns than the GSR, thats all I know

Have to disagree with that. The wear's anything but minimal and it becomes an issuw if you're planning on driving the same car for more than 10000km. Steering rack, ball joints, spring bearings etc. are all subjected to a level of stress they're not made for, at least not in any normal car.

I can't turn the wheels when stationary either even if I'd want to. That's mostly because I drive trucks for a living at times and I'd rather not break one. I'd still have to drive it after I'd ruined it. Naturally I don't want to ruin my own car either, I am afterall the one who has to fix it. Besides, I just changed the steering rack from a power assisted model last spring and that was my last one of those.
Hence the quick-ish turning, non-assisted steering's something like 4,7. It felt like I never turned the wheel enough. Dunno about the knuckle but judging by the slides I've managed to correct, it's enough

More wear on steering components, etc. It's a bad habit.

Bottom line is, you look like a twerp doing it. As if you're new to driving a car or couldn't see you had to turn the wheels until you were too far gone. Only n00bs do it. And it's annoying. Dont Do It!

It's like streetbikers who have to drop their feet to the ground when they're turning or slowing down to red lights. Sheesh!


Ok, back to the thread, steering - lock to lock. Make&Model, original or modified(how/who), power assisted or not.

My full specs; 2,6 turns, Ford Sierra '87, steering original from '93 model, power assisted. It's progressive too, which is nice.
