As some may or may not know, I just got a Honda Accord.

Its a nice car, nothing special, but nice.

I have two problems, none of them very serious.

One: Why the HELL is it so loud? It has like this little tiny looking exhaust, and yet is loud beyond reason for the look of that pipe. I feel really ricey, since the car isn't uber modded or something.

Two: It seems some kind of water leaks out of the exhaust at a pretty high rate, whats that all about? It only does it after the first start everyday, and only for a minute or so.

About the exhaust noise, you might want to have the entire system checked out for leaks. The additional noise may be caused by exaust gases escaping through them.

Did you try googling first or asking on honda-tech/reading up on the tech articles there?

1) Water in exhaust is from condensation from the exhaust sitting cold overnight

2) Check to see if your cat or exhaust pipes are all oem.

The muffler aint the only part making sounds. My CR-V's engine makes a louder sound than the muffler. Even when I'm standing behind it.

Problem one: you have a hole somewher in your exhaust...

Problem two: as already mentioned, the water coming out is condensation...

Water drops coming out of the tip of your muffler tip is normal unless its gushing like a fire hydrant.

As for the loud sound, I'm willing to bet the last owner gutted the catalytic converter. Some honda drivers do that so check if previous owner did the same.

It feels like its coming from the engine, but I could be wrong.

Also, I asked about the water because it seemed like a lot.

My mothers Camaro does it too, but not at the rate mine is. Hopefully it isn't something strange.

If it's coming from the engine, your exhaust manifold is separating from the head. I seriously don't get it, but so many people have exhaust leaks right now, myself included.

Anyway, you'll need to disconnect the manifold from the head, replace the gasket, and reattach the manifold to the head.

Your Accord.... Does it happen to be the type I like to call "NSX style"?

Interesting story of Accords and NSXs... in my earlier college years I drove the '95 Accord that I had in high school, and a college buddy who owned a '95 NSX backed into my car with it:

As you can see, my headlight, bumper and fender got dominated... but the carbon fiber hood survived just fine (even though it got gross just sitting in my carport over time)!

Why?

That'll be the easiest and least expensive leak to fix by far, unless it's just your downpipe separating from your cat.

And at least you don't have a turbo hanging off the manifold to contend with like I do. I'm not looking forward to replacing that gasket on my car.

Most likely the previous owner intentionally punctured a hole (and riced it) in order to make it sound louder than it should be.

That reminds me, there was an article about Cutouts...Though I'd say it would be pointless on a '90.... Though Speed Holes may make a nice hilarious prank to some bastard who keeps talking s**t about his car. laugh.gif

@Deeez: I literally thought it was one of those "cut-out CF-fake hoods"....

my thoughts exactly.

Your exhaust collects water vapor in normal operation, when it it pushed through the exhaust, it cools and collects in drops, these drops will then be pushed out the exhaust. However, more and more vapor can get in if you have a head leak. Also, this will make your exhaust note louder since it will be straight from the source about 2ft away from the drivers position. If you see steam or blue smoke coming from the exhaust, or, your vehicle overheats, stop driving it immediately before it dies. Seriously, failed gaskets can allow stuff like oil to get mixed in your antifreeze (overheat), antifreeze to get in the cylinder (steam in exhaust).

Start the car and go to the tail pipe, does it make a hissing sound? If so, that is more likely an exhaust valve leak.

If not, open the hood. Check for black soot on or around the head

right there in front underneath the plastic piece with the "do not touch" hand on it. Best to remove that piece before running as it will be hot. The soot will tell you if you have a leak, but if it is small, it may not be noticeable. In that case, you'll just have to listen for it. If it is loud but you cannot determine where the leak is, get a tube or hose about 2-3 foot in length, put one end up to your ear and move the other end across the head where the manifold and head meet, you'll hear the howl and feel the air if there is a leak there.

hope that helps. And I hope it is something as simple as a faulty gasket, cheap and easy to fix.

You can also feel for moving hot air with your hand to find the leak. That's how I found mine.

Alright. It is NOT the exhaust manifold...Its a 'Speed Hole'.

Joy, time to put that welding class to some use. Any suggestions?

if the hole is in the header, yeah, above. If it is in the pipes, measure the diameter, get a piece slightly bigger, enough to cover it. Cut the pipe in half right on top of the hole, then slide the bigger piece on both ends (clean it all up first of course), then draw a bead around both ends. In essence, a splice.
