QUOTE (http://www.theverge.com/2016/11/17/13669832/what-cd-music-torrent-website-shut-down)
What.cd, an invite-only music torrent website first launched in 2007, has been shut down after a raid by French authorities. The private tracker offered free (and often illegal) access to a massive, deeply thorough collection of music and was popular among audiophiles for its strict rules around quality and file formats. The site was created after the shutdown of another well-known torrent website, Oink, which operated between 2004 and 2007. Though its primary focus was music sharing, What.cd also permitted torrents of computer software, ebooks, and other content.

Good riddance. Glad to see the elitist circlejerk is over.

There are plenty of good private trackers though. See: Jpopsuki, Animebytes.

I didn't say private, I said invite-only. Huge difference.

JPS is invite-only, and I think AB is too right now (not 100% sure).

Are they? If they are, then fuck 'em. I'm sorry, but when you do invite-only for pirated content, you're just an elitist dickhead.

People have their reasons for running invite-only trackers and they aren't exactly hard to get into either, so I don't really get the sentiment. Even What.cd wasn't entirely invite-only as you could pass their bullshit interview test if you wanted.

The fact that they have an interview is sort of silly. If the interview was about music and music history, i'd say it was pretty neat, but its about audio quality.

I get the point, its useful, but lol
Not even audiophiles know what audiophiles want. Let the community dictate quality.

Elitist indeed.

Yeah, it's the bullshit audiophile elitism and mafia mentality that make (made) me hate What with a passion.

・ Not that I ever gave 2-cents about 'em, elitist circle-jerk they were, but kind'a makes ya wonder if Interpol was behind the bust working with French polícee ~ like they did with the KAT & teh Piratbyran's owners arrest. ohmy.gif

・ I understand they wanted to keep out the federalez with their audiosmurf interview but meh... I'm just glad no-one got raped in the ass by prison or death-penalty. These white-collared crimes are so trivial-stupid & a waste of any police force's time ~ that all they gotta do is burn down a couple of servers to appease the RIAA & whatever record company/association payed the copz to shut'em down.

・ Totally agree'd with Sensation! ~ the interview was a laughable test on a shyte Adobobee's DAW transcode spotting. Would've been cool if it was an actual test on music history or a practical-exercise in actual sound design; like creating a special FX track for a potential film. ♫

・ But yeah Pirate Bay's still around (miraculously) & that's all that matters ~ fuck Wut.cd fuck Interpol fuck the RIAA fuck Jazrac etc etc ~ I'm electing Trent Reznor for prez in 2020 & busting Artem Vaulin outta the fsckin' Gulag mates !! apxrock.gif

Negative. According to the original French-language report, the seizure was by the National Gendarmerie, specifically the branch known as C3N (military of the center for combating cyber crime).

Well I'll be a xiao's uncle! ohmy.gif ~ can't the hate the Frenchie's military tho' specially since wut.cd was elitist-prickerism anyway ~ anyone that carries a Famas , a raspberry beret, & a baguette under their shoulder ~ even if it's just for deco has my pat in the butt whilst in the UN shower-room with me ~ shifty2.gif

I wonder if the FLAC dump of game soundtracks on Nyaa recently had anything to do with this.

Just shyte vinyl rips and crap from the 1920's Al Capone junk like this CD →

You weren't missing much brotha ~ just free junk you can probably get better cover version of that song by Daft Punk or any other competent artist that wasn't born 2-centuries ago.

It was a pretty extensive directory of music - crap & good - but when you have an overarching rule of fat flacophile jerks that would just horde their inforbits & flaunt it around like a donkey-dick ~ it tends to piss people like myself & Kyon off.

~ It's gonna return 'cause lol internets never dies ~ but meh ~ who cares they're all elitist a-holes like people that work for Fromula-1 or the BBC. Even if you wanna befriend them you can't cause lol I'm superior. derp.gif

Probably demos/unreleased stuff by famous artists, or obscure DIY recording gems by otherwise no-names, 99.9% of which has already been made available through blogs specializing in that stuff, or Soulseek.

Beyonce's Halo demo by producer Ryan Tedder was leaked thru what then it trickled down into YouTube. Would be one example.

Personally speaking, there's a reason that stuff was never released in the 1st place. Neat for DJ's to get vocals instrumentals & extended but ... if you're really an audiophile you'd be making those beats instead of scraping an iffy directory tho' user posted image
