So the problem started when back 2 months ago I went to San Juan with my grandma in the Cavalier. While we where in traffic in order to get back home, I notice that whenever I shift back to first, I literally have to push it by force, as if the lever is sticking itself, and in order for me to shift into second, I also have to use a lot of force than necessary in order to pull the sticky stick shift out of first and into second. It does the same thing when I then go into 3rd.

On 1st, 3rd and 5th gear, you would need to use a lot more force than usual in order to get the stick shift in-and-out of the 3 gears I mentioned above. There was no grinding involved when I was pushing in and out the shift level into the above gears. 2nd,4th and Reverse go in and out flawless.

Now I was able to temporarily fix this problem my adding lubrication to the shifting mechanism on top of the tranny. This seemed to work in the meantime, but I had to constantly carry either PB Blaster, WD 40 or oil lubrication in order to get it unstuck.

NOW however, its in all gears. I have to use force on ALL gears in order for the shift lever to move at all, it is almost as if trying to push and pull a pole cemented into the ground.

I should also mention that back on the story where I was stuck in traffic in San Juan, transmission actually spit out the shift lever halfway out of first while I was running, causing the gears to grind. This is when at first it would get stuck in 1st, 3rd and 5th gear.

I've been told that it would be the shifter linkages themselves or that I may need a new clutch, however the clutch feels just fine. There is no sign of it being faded and the car has no problem engaging, and even still I have to use a lot more force than usual in order to move them damn shifter around.

I am pretty much out of ideas as to what could be the real reason and could really use some help on this. I can't drive the Cavalier without knowing I have to pump my right arm and HADOUKEN!! or SHORYOUKEN!!! the shift lever into every gear.

EDIT: I can also go ahead and record/post a video to show what I mean if anyone needs to.

Could it be the syncros in the trans? Check everything on the trans, like oil, and gears. It could just be a shifter linkages or it could be something stuck on the gears/shaft.

Since its only doing it in some gears im going to assume the linkage is getting fubar, especialy since adding some butt-lube ghetto fixed it for awhile. Ill go on a limb and say possibly they are bent, OR possibly the tranny mounts are busted worn and torn, and the linkages no longer line up properly.

chilliend: Couldn't be the syncros, otherwise it would also mean that the gears would grind whenver i have to use force to move the shift lever into gear.

sideways: Is it still possible to find the shifter linkages for my car. I've been checking gmpartsdirect.com and can't seem to find them. As for the bushings, they do fin for normal cruising everyday driving, but knowing myself, looks like I'll need a new set of bushings as well.

Apex: Glad I made your day laugh.gif

I'll take a video tomorrow just to show what I mean, I'll even add a little something extra.

The bushings do alright for every day driving? Im talking about the transmission mount bushings to be specific, nothing suspension related. I should have been more specific sorry about that. When they tear the transmission can tilt a bit to the side in either direction, depends on the car- but this misalignment can be enough to tweak the shifter linkages so they dont work properly.

Im sure you CAN get the linkages somewhere new if need be, but ive never looked for them so i wouldnt know. Try rock auto or calling your respective dealership. Worst case you could probably try the junkyard. Check those mounts first though.

jack the car up and put it on jack stands- Then take the jack and push up onto the transmission with it until it stresses up as far as it will go on the mounts. Take a light (be a good time to use some cleaner to clean things up if you felt like it) and check around all the edges of the mounts, look for cracks and more importantly tears.

I should have been more specific as well since I have a bit of mixing things up, so my bad sideways. laugh.gif

But seeing as I was going to give the engine bay a clean-up above and underneath anyways, I'll do as you say. I was having the same feeling but I kept thinking that it was just the shifter linkage. A bit dark now though, so I'll be checking up on this in the morning. I just got new jackstands and a hydraulic cat so glad that I'll be able to use them lol.

I'll keep this thread updated with the results.

EDIT: I'm very sorry to double post, but I just finished doing another look around and here is what I found so far.

After having the car on jack stands and jacking the transmission up as it could possibly go, I went and check the transmission mount bushing. Found out there were no cracks nor tears at all to my surprise. I wasn't able to take pics or videos due to camera problems, but I'm taking a guess that I may need new shifter linkages after all.

Hey I have this happen too.. except I don't have to go all Ryu and Ken on the shifter...

Sometimes when going into 2nd or reverse I have some problems where the shifter doesn't wanna go in... so I have to shove it in.

Synchros problem?

Check your fluid levels, just in case. Having low fluid can make trannies do some weird shit.

I had a similiar problem not to long ago that happened only sometimes. The Brake & Clutch place couldn't find what it was, so I told them just bleed out the old clutch fluid & bleed in some new.

Well, bleeding it in it kept sucking in air. Turns out the master & slave clutch cylinders were bad even though they had no leaks. New master & a rebuild kit on the slave & alls good again.

Well this morning I just had finished repairing this problem. And to my relief, it is as I had thought it would have been. I'm glad it wasn't what everyone had thought it would be over here.

My car comes with a Isuzu 5 speed transmission, and out of the two shifter cables: The first being the one that has to move the transmission fork forward and back and the second cable moving side to side.

Well shift cable #1 was the culprit. Me and a mechanic took it out to see what we could do.

This shifter cable has seen better days. We tried making this shifter cable budge in order to hold out a while longer till I have enough money to buy new shifter cables. Needless to say, after one hour and a half of work, a drill and a can of WD 40, we were able to make the cable move freely.

We discovered that the shifter cable had ALOT and I mean ALOT of surface rust ( lack of knowing what could be another way of saying this specific work i know in spanish and turn it into english...). The cable itself was literally BLEEDING crap and rust out of the inner tubing of the cable itself. We ran out of WD40 and went to buy another car.

However, when we returned to resume work, the cable itself decided that enough is enough, and after maybe 10 more minutes of work, it would not budge at all.

So, with the help of my parents we bought new shifter cables and had them installed, BOTH of them, and I am VERY happy with the results.

Now I don't have to HADOUKEN!! nor SHORYOUKEN!! neither GRAAAAAAAND VIPER!!!(guilty gear) the shift lever in order to make it budge at all lol.

You never mentioned it was an Isuzu gearbox... I would have immediately told you to look at everything but.

Those f**kers are indestructible. I drifted the hell out of my 92 Isuzu pickup for 4 years. After that, the gearbox was still solid and the only issue with the open rear diff (which you should never drift on, ever) was that an output seal blew and all the oil drained out. It was empty by the time I noticed. Replaced the seal and refilled the diff, and it still drove fine on the same gears I ran sans lube at 80mph.

Strangely enough, I've been hearing tells from J-body owners that the Isuzu transmission on base model Cavaliers that came with the 2.2 OHV motor, the LN2, where actually pretty fragil it abused constantly, and would sometimes break for no apparent reasons.

I dunno. My transmission has seen lots of abuse and till this day it has never given me any problems at all, internal related of course. No gears grinding either.

EDIT: And my bad about not mentioning what transmission i have, but yes, its a Isuzu 5 speed. My mechanic was suprised to know that though lol.

Noooooot quite. It's similar to the Iron Duke, but its not the Iron Duke itself. And the ln2 never came with a plastic timing gear from the factory. Besides, the timing gear was replaced about 7 years ago by my father when he bought it from my uncle and gave it a full tune-up himself.

Ooooh man most gearboxes would have QQed and gone home with the HADOUKEN!!, SHORYOUKEN!! and GRAAAAAAAND VIPER!!! moves. Epic box is epic.

The suggestions of synchros made me lulz though. On at least trying to get 'em in, gears with f**ked synchros sound like an angle grinder hitting a metal wall...and the problem is jury-rig fixed by rev-syncing instead of KAMEHAMEHA arm movements biggrin.gif

Glad you got it fixed... smile.gif

Which is why my gearbox has had no synchro problems till this day. Still as strong as ever with the only mishap I ever had with it was this and nothing more.

But yes, no more HADOUKEN!!! nor SHORYOUKEN!! neither GRAAAAAND VIPER!!!.
