Magic Eraser
Initially dubbed "The Outrun Technique" eraser is now an essential technique in IDv3. Introduced early version 3, eraser was intended for the game Outrun 2 only.
In version 3, one would shift up a gear then down a gear again which causes the car to turn a little more. HOWEVER! Do not expect ID to behave like outrun, the outrun eraser is performed during a turn while for it to be effective in Initial D, eraser must be performed as earliest as possible before a corner. If you have already learned feint, feint a little earlier and turn in a little, then eraser and complete the turn as usual. With eraser, it is possible to complete some turns full gas when you normally wouldn't be able to. Some turns can be exited with higher exit speed by using multiple erasers but anything more than 3 is not recommended. Most turns are just 1 eraser and a few are 2. There are rare situations when 3 is needed. Remember that eraser works by helping your car turn a little more, so angle the car towards the corner first, (just turn the wheel a little inwards) then shift up and back down quickly. This technique will not make your car go faster as in Wangan Midnight: Maximum Tune (dubbed the Gacha Technique).

If your using a 5 gear car....would you have to downshift to 4 then do an eraser...if so would you do that as late as possible at the same time as early as possible....????

if you're in any other gear other that the last gear, shift up then down. shifting down to eraser when in top gear can slow down the car but it still has the effect to make the car turn better. you cant shift up an imaginary gear so you hav no choice the shift down then up

I dunno, even when I'm in fourth gear, I still do a 4-3-4 eraser most of the time. the 4-5-4 erasers just feels different.

Yeah, it works both ways. Eraser takes advantage of the fact that whenever you downshift, the car slides a bit and starts oversteering in the direction your steering wheel is tilted.

So basically you can do eraser the usual way by shifting down, then back up before you lose too much speed. Or you can upshift and downshift to avoid losing any speed at all. The reverse version doesn't seem to have as much kick as the regular version though...

4-5-4 should be done if you are almost to 5th gear... Doing 4-3-4 close to 5th will cause you to lose a tad bit of speed. Its especially important to bear this in mind when theres a long straight following the corner. Perfect example - Akagi UHD CP4... the last turn of the S Turns has to be erasered. Doing 4-3-4 there will cause you to lose 1 KPH, while doing 4-5-4 won't cause you to lose any. It sounds trivial, but every KPH counts when you're pushing your times!

Oh, and also, Crazy Taxi and Outrun 2 uses eraser-like shifting to induce drifts as well. Seems like Sega likes eraser =P

LoL excel 1km/h cause of eraser?

seriously, I've nut hugged my share of keeping speed cause of high gear eraser (also known as the down shift eraser) but seriously, an eraser does not take even a fraction of a second to execute and would not make the slightest difference to your time. Probably 0.002 difference, if even that.

Hey Excel, is what you're talking about an actual 4-5-4 eraser as I imagine it? Or are you just saying you should pre-emptively shift to a higher gear beofre entering a turn so you can clear it at higher speed? In that case, it wouldn't be a 4-5-4 'eraser', and I wouldn't be so damn confused shifty2.gif

In your situation about Akagi UH, wouldn't 4-3-4, then shifting back to 5 when the speed is appropriate, make more sense than 4-5-4, then back to 5? I don't know, maybe I'm wrong. Just seems more intuitive to me.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, I can sort of imagine what you guys mean by high-gear eraser. Although I've never used it, I could see a situation where it would be useful. My apologies for being ignorant. rolleyes.gif

so 5-4-5 works as well?

does the accelerator have to be floored when doing the eraser and turning?

do I have to use the eraser every time at consecutive hairpins? my reflexes are slow so yeah... grin2.gif

Better if you don't use the eraser yet... Try practicing the basics like out-in-out lines, braking, etc...

If, by any chance you got these, the most erasers go with braking not as hard, but not as soft either...

It depends on the turn (How fast you're going, wideness of the road, etc.). Some turns can be taken without braking, some will still require it.

Eraser will never be a complete substitute for proper braking. smile.gif

need to clarify something

does it matter if u use eraser when the wheel is pointing toawrds the right direction but the car is not?

Like when you feint hard and the car doesnt immediately swerve back.
