5 In, 4 Out
Abbreviated 5i4o.
Introduced in version 2, 5 in 4 out was initially a hard concept to understand. The name, however, is quite self explanitory. One approaches a corner and does all the braking and slowing down in a higher gear (on 6 gear cars: 6th gear). Then during the acceleration part of the corner, one would shift down to a gear (in 5 gear cars: 4th gear). The idea behind this is that 5th gear keeps a higher speed but the car still slows down enough to complete a turn. The player shifts down a gear for faster acceleration.
Sounds like a simple idea but if one is used to 4-in-4-out shifting during a turn, they will notice that you must brake a lot more for 5-in-4-out.

The description of the use of the technique is spot-on, but the explanation doesn't make much sense. The way I understand the technique is this: you approach the turn in a higher gear for the sole purpose of being able to downshift at the apex [for better turning and therefore a better exit] and not be in a gear too low. Either way, it's a very useful technique!

To make you understand better, I want you to make an experiment. Try to release the gas on 5th gear when you go through the curve, then shift to 4th gear. Next, try to shift to 4th gear first before the curve then release gas as you go through.

If you're still not satisfied, try to brake on 5th gear while you go through then try to brake while on 4th gear through the curve. Did you notice the difference?

Proper braking can help you turn a little better. In some cars braking induces a bit of oversteer which helps you get a better entry angle (translating to better cornering ability).

If you do your braking in a lower gear, your speed will drop much faster than it would compared to if you were braking in a higher gear. (Try out the experiment that Wolf suggested, and you'll see what I mean)

So basically 5i4o lets you get that extra kick from braking with minimal loss of speed.

a friend of mine taught me this a few weeks ago and it really works! i used to wallow in exits before i learned this. still figuring out the proper braking distances though

when do you shift down? when braking before the turn or at the apex of the turn?

Usually before you hit the apex or at the apex. It also sometimes differs depending on the car and curve but usually the method is the same.

Is 5 in 4 out at full throttle the shit going down in V4? Just wondering. Or its derivatives (like 4 in 3 out, 3 in 2 out, XD)

I was wondering if my current techinique is just what describes the 5-in-4-out technique.. hmm.. this is what i do.. At the start of a corner, specifically a hairpin, I hit the brake, then shift down twice from fifth to third, hit accelerator at the apex and shift up to four to end the drift.. that's still a 5-in-4-out right? blink.gif

nope,

5-in-4-out is doing all the braking in 5th gear, then downshifting to 4th at the apex when you're ready to accelerate out of the turn. There are a quite a few explanations in this topic.

Anyway if you're trying this approach and can't take the turn cleanly without downshifting, then you're not braking enough. Try braking earlier or longer. thumbsup.gif

Shifting down twice? That's more of the MGS (Machinegun Shifting) technique...

lvl 5 ? just try to avoid hitting the wall . you dont really need to eraser in iro . just downshift and brake a little bit ( depends on what car you use ) . iro is quite a narrow course , so just block bunta if he ever comes near to your butt lol . hope this helps ! happy.gif

Lol to be honest not much coz he keeps getting in front at the start and i dont want to block him from the begginging coz i dont get much speed theire are just to hairpins that i cant do, One is the first hair pin i am always going ither to fast and crash the wall or to slow and get over taken, the next is just after the first checkpoint and the car just wont turn, The car i am driving is RX-7 type R all i need to do is swing it out abit more... opinions??

if 6 gear car stay in 4 or 5. go 4th and brake a bit to make turns.

my car is 5 gear i make turns in 3 and brake i get exit of 76 depending if i did alright.

then i shift to 4th at around 84 ish.

just experiment. id rather take a speed not to fast and not too slow. =D
