I had a blue one for first stage a long long time ago. I think it was tokyopop. I saw some from funimation and the "SAVE" and the tokyopop ones but I can't tell the difference!

honestly even though i have not watched the newer boxed set versions i would say to go for that

http://www.ezydvd.com.au/DVD/initial-d-fir...c-set/dp/816833

these new box sets have repackaged all stages upto 4th, which the original tokyopop versions did not do - http://www.ezydvd.com.au/search?q=initial+d&t=all

all you really need are crisp versions of the original japanese dub with english subs anyways, so i would bank on these versions

I personally own all 4 stages on the FUNimation release and I must say they are pretty nice. I say jump on it if they're cheap enough because they are leagues better than the TOKYOpop stuff that they churned out back in the day.

I would say get the new box sets. The old ones that were joint Tokyopop-Funimation were only for First and Second Stage, but the new ones from Funimation include First through Fourth, so I would recommend those just for consistency's sake. Plus you'll have versions with an actually decent dub, if that's your kind of thing.

I have the new ones as well, this is what I would recommend to anyone thinking about purchasing the box sets.

Can't find an answer elsewhere and this looks like a decent thread in which to ask,

Any difference between the original Funimation releases or the newer S.A.V.E. editions?

No, they are the exact same DVDs as the original Funimation release. This is typical of Funimation when they want to get rid of excess stock. They do it with a lot of older, niche series' that don't sell too much in initial release.

Sorry to jump on an older thread, but are there any good box sets for the Fifth Stage?

I tried to look for DVDs or sets while I was in China, but apparently there aren't many stores that carry DVDs.

As far as I know, there is no box set for Fifth Stage, official or otherwise. Be careful, there are bootleg DVDs out there. Thankfully, they're very easy to identify as such.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know if Funimation has done any Region 2 releases for their box sets?

I'm not too sure, I think the DVD's are Region Free, but you could always modify your DVD to play different region discs.

Thank you Nakazato. If the discs are region free, that would be great. I don't know if anyone can confirm this? If not, the issue I have is my PS3 and Xbox are my primary DVD players in my room and I'm not really open to modding the Xbox and the PS3 is a bitch to sort out if I'm not mistaken? Also, I like the option of being able to take them to someone else's house to introduce them to the series.

^Does your CPU have a DVD drive? You can also flash that to make it region free.

Yes, my computer does have a DVD drive, so I could use it, but I would rather not have to hook it up to the TV to watch them. I may just wait and see if Funimation finally give us a PAL release sometime in the next century.
