A pivotal event in Initial D history is the long-awaited race between Takumi and Ryosuke, thought of as the ultimate opponent for the Ghost of Akina. Takumi's victory ushered in his sophomore era where he started branching out to unfamiliar territory and more unique opponents. Without that moment, Takumi's path in his racing "career" would have been a lot different... right?

Would a loss to Ryosuke have crushed him, humbled him, or lit a fire under his ass to consciously improve rather than resting on what he already knew? Would there be a rematch with Ryosuke? Would he venture to other prefectures? What would Bunta think of all this?

We might have a very different story line.
Takumi could be easily overshadowed by The RedSuns and their quest to become the best,
he could have very easily taken the 86 and challenged Ryosuke to a second race, tpo...

...but at the same time, he could've also just went on his way with his deliveries and not cared. At this point, he was still denying that he was a street racer, so the series could've easily ended there.

Overshadowed by the RedSuns or just by Ryosuke? Keisuke would still have been destroyed by "a beat up 86". Their reputation would still have been tarnished. It wouldn't have been a complete victory, especially considering that Ryosuke cancelled the uphill battle entirely. They would have left Akina with a 1-1 record instead of the domination that Ryosuke desired out of his racing campaign.

gotta admit, I'm not sure where it would have gone but I kinda like where I my head went first.

We kinda have to figure that Takumi would have just continued on with deliveries as usual, but one must remember Bunta had planned to upgrade the 86 after Takumi lost a race or blew it up so that would have happened sooner. Takumi might have still had the guts to take Seji Iwake, and Kyoichi Sudo might have admitted to a decent defeat rather than blowing a gasket and offering 'lessons'.

Bunta didn't even have the engine ready at that point, though. It would have been quite the wait. Also, how would Takumi make deliveries without the AE86? I forget how they got around that when he really did blow the engine out.

Coupled with a quad turbo V12 tuned by Bunta that makes the Veyron look like a Fisher Price toy

Well that escalated into typical fanfic territory quite fast.

You could argue that every race for Takumi was a pivotal moment. Things could've been different if he lost, as he would no longer be the focus. I think the series kept up his winning streak too long, to the point where he couldn't lose, or it would be so uncharacteristic of him, and there would be no way to continue.

The time when he lost, it was sort of discounted, because he blew out his engine. Like, what if he lost to Nakazato? Then, probably Keisuke would challenge Nakazato and beat him (or lose to him). Then Keisuke and Ryosuke would continue their Project "fastest in kanto region", and Takumi would go on living a normal life, maybe making a few cameos here and there. Who knows, he might've ended up going to university with Myougi and gone on to have a successful career, start a family, have kids, work as a salary person, eventually retire, and live in a small house in the mountains in his later years.

But, the series probably went the way it went because he kept winning.
