Ryosuke and Keisuke were blabbering 'Capp light, so it faster and Takumi will need every skill he has to keep up' and crap, but what if he used the Impreza? It is heavier than the 86, but would the 4WD traction would make it easy for Takumi to win?

Takumi wasn't as used to the Impreza at this point in the series, so he just wouldn't be able to use it effectively enough to win. End of story.

But assuming he was used to it, then yeah, he'd keep up on the straights pretty well after he figured out to give up on entry and focus on exit. He'd be a little slower going into corners than he was in the 86, but he'd be a lot faster going out of them; and like with the 86, he could blind attack past the Cappuccino on that long straight near the end. Same result, but a little easier.

I have to wonder how well Takumi would've recovered from that brief excursion offroad in the Impreza though.

The Impreza would have destroyed the Cappuccino, stepping on the accelerator in the wet in a RWD is scary, multiply that by 4 for a public road when you're trying to push it.

I've been following (and driven) my friends Celica GT4 in the wet on numerous occasions in both an MR2 turbo and a MX5, when the conditions get treacherous the AWD has a real advantage.

Part of Takumis slump was that he couldn't figure out how to beat the Impreza with the AE86, kind of implying that he was faster driving the Impreza.
That's my take anyway.

You'd have to break the timeline to make that battle happen. Takumi battled the mysterious Impreza in ch258. The Cappuccino race was in ch293-304. Takumi didn't even begin to drive the Impreza until ch318.

Had he brought it to the rain battle, he probably would have won... but remember that Northern Saitama Alliance specifically brought out the Cappuccino to defeat an AE86. If Takumi was fielding an Impreza, they'd just roll out another AWD car, or call the race off because Project D changed cars at the last second.

is there a rule that you can't change cars before the start ?

the Toudo School thought they would be racing the FD and at last minute they faced the AE86

That was a special race. They never asked to race anybody specifically, but only assumed it would be against the FD. In every other case, it was "Downhill = Takumi, Uphill = Keisuke".

Remember when they faced off against the assholes in the Evos who were racing for money. When Keisuke brought up that he would need to switch cars, they balked and said that was unfair. Remember that they're tuning for a race against a specific vehicle, just like how Ryosuke tuned his FC to have a better downhill race against the 86 and not shred his tires as much. If Takumi had the Impreza back then, there's no reason for Ryosuke to do that.

Think about it from this specific race perspective. They're fielding a goddamn Cappuccino. Do you really think they wouldn't complain if you switched out for an Impreza? That's like playing Forza in race with C-class cars but swapping out for a U999 car at the last second. Everybody would want to kick you out.

Of course they really should have put the pro-rally driver in an Evo or Impreza, not a Cappucino, but of course the rain was unexpected.

Probably not, because the Impreza weighs even more than the Trueno. It would favor the little Suzuki in Nobuhiko's opinion.

@RickkkyyP : The Cappuchino was bought using the team members' money. An Impreza or an Evo isn't exactly viable with such low resources. And since they were looking for a car lighter than the Trueno, those two wouldn't even be on their radar.

It was that car on that mountain pass with that driver. It likely wouldn't have been the same weapon everywhere.
