Okay, I've been debating with my roommate for a while now over naming schema. Here's what it's come down to:

My roomie owns a 2003 Ford Focus ZX-5. He gets pissed because I call it a wagon, since it's got 5 doors. Yes, I know there's a ZXW which most definitely is a wagon. He's tried to call his car a coupe, but then I told him that it wasn't, since coupes have two doors. But I also say that the ZX-3 is a hatchback, and that a coupe would be like a sedan (trunk, not hatch) but with 2 doors.

So here's the real meat of the question. What defines a hatchback? What defines a coupe? A wagon? Can a hatchback be a coupe as well?

I mean, I know that with the Toyota Corolla (specifically, the often-called Trueno/Levin that this forum seems to base itself around) has a hatchback and a coupe... the coupe has a trunklid and the hatchback has a hatch...

Yeah. It's way too confusing for me, and nobody here seems to know. Help!

When I think of them, hatch, coupe, sedan, and wagon...

This is what I equate them with...

hatch: 2 doors, 1 hatch, no trunk
coupe: 2 doors, official trunk
wagon: 4 doors, 1 hatch, no trunk
sedan: 4 doors, official trunk

The separate term "hatchback" only seems applicable if there is a non-hatch version of the car (and hence the term "coupe"). The AE86 and S13 are perfect examples of this.

However ....... certain cars (i.e., the Z (I'm thinking specifically Z32 and Z33)) are hatchbacks, yet Nissan (and KBB) designates them as "coupes."

Actually, I think the Mazda and KBB designation for the RX-7 as "coupe." *Shrug* You got me.

Well, I can tell you that with the Ford Focus, we can neglect the definition of coupes in you and your roomie's discussion, as coupes are strictly two-door cars...There is no Ford Focus coupe variant...

But here's where automotive definition gets a little weird...I'm just gonna limit myself to the ZX3/ZX5/ZXW...

It's obvious that the ZX3 (In example) is a hatchback, as it's a 3-door car with a rear hatch area (2 doors, plus a hatch, which is considered a door; In common sense terms, I really don't see how a hatch can be considered a door, since who really enters/exits a car through the hatch area?)...

And the Focus has a ZXW, 5-doors...Simple, right?

Technically, the difference between wagons and hatchbacks have to do with cargo area; Wagons usually have more cargo area, because of their squared-off designs (Whereas the ZX5 still retains the ZX3's rounded-off rear hatch)...So no matter if it's a 3 or a 5 door, cargo area is what generally classifies a car as one or the other...

And adding on that last statement, dimentions also play a factor too...The ZX5 can't be considered a wagon, because it's essentially the same size (And body style) as a ZX3, but with two more doors, whereas the ZXW is actually, physically longer...

...and I really hope my time wasn't wasted...I look over your post a second time, and see you're asking a general car question, and I itterated it as a Focus-specific question...

Meh :\

No, that's okay. So, what would you consider the ZX-5 to be?

Also, thanks for the responses, everybody. ^-^

I would consider the ZX5 to be a hatchback...As quirky as a 5-door hatchback sounds, it doesn't fit the physical criteria for a wagon..

Best explanation.

But here's a visual for those that need to associate images to words.

Nomake, your friend owns a wagon. If he wont accept that, then sugar coat it and tell him that he has a "sports wagon" - much like how the EVO and WRX are known as "sports sedans".

Despite being mr technical, i love simplicity wink2.gif We find simplicity through explination. No need to overcomplicate the simple.

5-door = Wagon (hatch)
4-door = Sedan (trunk)
3-door = Hatchback (hatch)
2-door = Coupe (trunk)

rx7 = fastback generally in the US. fast backs are like hatchbacks, but the hatch is not verticle. ie, the fox body mustangs and the ones from the 60's.

QUOTE
An automobile designed with a curving downward slope from roof to rear.
that's from dictionary.com and even that is barely accurate. but the term has been around in the US for many decades.

technically, but the proliferation of 3 door sub compacts tends to call for a distinction.

they wouldn't, for example, call an FD a "hot hatch" over in britain.

Pronunciation: 'hach-"bak
Function: noun

Main Entry: cou·pé
Variant(s): or coupe /kü-'pA, 2 often 'küp/
Function: noun
Etymology: French coupé, from past participle of couper to cut, strike
1 : a four-wheeled closed horse-drawn carriage for two persons inside with an outside seat for the driver in front
2 usually coupe : a 2-door automobile often seating only two persons; also : one with a tight-spaced rear seat -- compare

One entry found for station wagon.
Main Entry: station wagon
Function: noun
: an automobile that has a passenger compartment which extends to the back of the vehicle, that has no trunk, that has one or more rear seats which can be folded down to make space for light cargo, and that has a tailgate or liftgate

The Grand National has two doors and is considered a sedan because of how it's platform is built.
