2013 has been a great year for lost media, and just this week we've seen yet another previously-lost urban legend revealed. In 1975, Sesame Street aired a short that was particularly surreal and, to many children who saw it, unsettling. It was called "Cracks" and was only broadcast eleven times until 1980. The people who saw it as kids remembered it clearly and, despite only being shown a handful of times, it became a sort of urban legend of lost media. People searched high and low for this piece's existence and dug up evidence of broadcast dates and contacted many places trying to get more info.

Anyway, nearly 34 years after the last time it was shown on TV, someone anonymously sent a copy of the short to the Lost Media Wiki and it has subsequently been uploaded. You can see how the producers of Sesame Street would have made the choice to not air this short often and eventually toss it completely, but I think it's a wonderfully surreal bit. I love the soundtrack and the alternation between singing and narration. It's a really cool piece of history.

Wow, that is genuinely incredible. Never even knew this existed! It makes you wonder how many other bizarre, surreal and amazing things have been lost in history.

Am i the only one that finds this just a little creepy?

still pretty interesting to see what they used to do for Sesame Street all those years ago.

It is very surreal in an unsettling sort of way. Probably a mix of the visuals and the odd musical score. I'm sure exactly why it's so sought after!

I can see why it was "lost"

during the 1980's in the US we had the drug wars and the DEA was made to fight the crack epidemic in the streets. Crack was not really aware until the media was covering it because of ronald reagan presidency but people knew about the drug before then.

Crack master

Crack friends

I can see why this was shown very little and forgotten.
