| ummm juz wanted to know y almost every character in initial d wears a new balance shoe.. does new balance really make great racing shoes? or are they sponsors of initial d? or mayb new balance sneakers are popular in japan? i cant help but notice since im kinda a shoe fanatic.. |

| I am not sure if it is preference or not, but at least in the anime I think the shoes were based on sponsorships from the shoe company, it's why we see Nikes in Third Stage... |

| yea if u watch the 1st stage episodes u see the N emblem on the side of the shoe. I wear them as well, not because they're in the show, but because they're really comfortable and i can easily feel the clutch when i drive. |

| I used to wear steel toed shoes (steel insert on the inside) but for driving i have to wear something else, cant feel the pedals as well- and since the bottom is really thick its hard to heel-toe properly at all. SO my other shoes be vans. Im not picky about shoes really, theyve always been black- black shoes go with anything. |

| I own a pair of New Balance shoes too, they're great for driving and walking long distances, not to mention jogging or running... However, once you've tried specially designed racing shoes for driving, the kind that you see on those Best Motoring Videos, its totally different, once you've used them, you can't use anything less... |

| i actually sell footwear as my job. we carry quite a few new balance shoes. in my professional opinion. they are good shoes, good cushion. but they're general foot model they base most of their shoes on doesn't seem to fit us asians very well. Vancouver has soooo many of us. it's best to go to the local New Balance store to find the perfect width for fore-foot and heel. but Asics are better. best shoes i've ever owned. and i own a pair of $160 new balance shoes... |

| It's pretty obvious what they wear. With all the foot shots when they accel, brake and shift you see the feet a lot. It's also hard to miss the big N on the side of every shoe in the show practicly. |

Lol...I have one pair of those, one in red, and one in gray. They are great driving shoes if you don't have aftermarket pedals with holes in them. I wear a very similar pair, just different material.  I've tried many shoes over the years, from Adidas, to Reebok, to Vans, and now to New Balance. I never really liked Nike shoes (or their company for the matter). The New Balances' are by far the most comfy shoes i've had. And yes, you can feel the clutch great with them. And yea, i have noticed how the characters in Initial D have different NB shoes. My next set are brown. The only ones i've really noticed were Takumi's (White/Black, Panda colored!), Bunta (Orange), Daiki (Brown), and i want to say Kenta had Red ones in First Stage. But don't quote me on that, i'm not sure. |

| Takumi and Bunta were the only characters that I know wearing the NB shoes. And their shoes suit them well. I have yet to find the orange ones that Bunta wears in the first stage. |

this is the closest I've been able to find to Takumi's shoe in First Stage     other than the black laces, it's pretty spot on. and if you're really hardcore for the authentic takumi look, all you'd have to do is buy some spare white laces and put them on. here's an image from 1st stage (from the intro) for reference  these are new balance classics 525s. the thing is this color scheme seems kinda rare too find now a days. good luck guys. |

| Silly noobs, none of the characters actually used New Balances. They simply changed it from Nike's in the manga to (at the time) a generic "N," which probably wasn't even meant to appear be New Balances at the time. Just like all the fake sponsors on Ryosuke an Keisuke's cars. I'm almost certainly the resemblance to the New Balance 574 is a coincidence. They have only been in Japan since 1989. Nine years. This is probably why they changed back to Nike's in Stage Three, which had a much bigger budget. That said, I bought a pair forever and ever ago because of Initial D....hehe |

I think they might be inspired by them and there are quite a few New Balance shows with a simple N on them. The fake sponsors on the cars are due to the animation studios not wanting to waste money to get the license to use them in their series. |

| I havent seen that many people wearing NBs in Japan. Most runners wear Asics since its a Japanese brand. That, or one of the big brands. Nike, Adidas, etc. Dunlop sells more shoes than NB does here, hehe. |

I also noticed most of the sports stores were selling them, I asked to some employee of some ABC Mart and they even had some limited models for Japan of that brand. I know it because my friend bought ones. Maybe it has to do with some specific regions or something... |

They very well may be, Asics use that kind of design on the side quite frequently from what I've seen. I've got a pair, super comfortable, but with the gel sole trying to drive in them was rough for the first week. I can heel-toe no problem even in slip-on dress shoes, and the Asics were a bitch to get used to. I love them now, but the first week was rough while the sole wore in. |

They're super comfy, but yeah, not cool in the car for a week or two initially. I honestly haven't found anything I can't heel-toe my car in though, but I can't say I've ever tried barefoot. I blame the pedal layout for said unwarranted global success. |

New Balance is a company that makes new sneakers ever year, whatever model Takumi & Bunta wore in the 90's, it's out of production in both the international & Japanese markets. They continually remake shoes that look like their classic sneakers, so chances of finding a pair that looks like Takumi or Bunta's shoes is actually pretty good. However, we'd have to personally ask Shigeno what the inspiration for their shoes was to know exactly what model sneaker it was.   Image size reduced, original size: 4032 x 2268.
