Through out the whole series everyone wondered who could Takumi's mom be? and where did she go? well after analyzing a piece from Final Stage. The real teaser could be right in front of you. Hold on because this might just take you for a RIDE on its own.

So lets roll back the series into the earlier stages, right after 1st.

2nd Stage Episode 02
-We find out that 86 will need an engine swap... Eventually.

kissanime.com/Anime/Initial-D-Second-Stage-Sub/Episode-002?id=30196
@ 8mins into the Episode Bunta reveals that he has already found one, the notorious 4A-GE 20-valve VVTi.

Clues:
Engine is from a Circuit AE101 and labels the origin from an "unlikely Source"

2nd Stage Episode 10

kissanime.com/Anime/Initial-D-Second-Stage-Sub/Episode-010?id=30204
@ 9:00 Wataru pops Takumi's hood and concludes that Takumi's dad is affiliated in a Racing Industry, or was at some point.

Clues:
Engine is only attainable through TRD or Racing Industry
Bunta has connections with people who work in closely in a racing industry

3rd stage Movie

kissanime.com/Anime/Initial-D-Third-Stage/Movie?id=31816
@ 1:04:40 Takumi mentions "mother" during the conversation
@ 1:09:50 Natsuki Arrives at the tofu shop looking for Takumi, she strays off after Bunta says he isn't home yet.
@ 1:10:33 Bunta remarks "She kind of resembles an old peddler"
@ 1:12:26 Bunta reveals that Takumi has similar emotional traits. "Ill Bet he(Takumi) doesn't seriously hate you(Natsuki) and like his Father here, once he gets depressed he tends to stay that way for a while during times like that his attitude and thinking is probably filled with anxiety"

Clues:
-Takumi mentions "since there is no mother at home" (A reason why they do not celebrate Christmas anymore)
-Bunta is reminded of a female from the past, if we look into it a bit more you realize that Natsuki has brownish hair just like Shinji's mother.
-Bunta has been through a critical point during his past and is reminded by Takumi's emotions explained by Natsuki.

4th Stage Episode 6

kissanime.com/Anime/Initial-D-Fourth-Stage/Episode-006?id=6331
@14:00 Masashi Suzuki visits Bunta, discussing the terms of the next car he will buy.

Clue:
-Masashi Suzuki is very well connected and seems to be a close friend of Bunta, and seems to understand Bunta's preference accurately.

4th Stage Episode 7

kissanime.com/Anime/Initial-D-Fourth-Stage/Episode-007?id=6318
in the beginning of the episode Takumi is challenged by a mysterious Impreza, later on you find out that it is Bunta and his new car.

Clue:
Subaru Impreza WRX STI Coupe Type R Version V (GC8)
This car plays a significant role just because of what type of car it is, they are highly popular in Rally Cross Racing. Once again Masashi was able to provide another notable and rare car.

Final Stage Episode 1

kissanime.com/Anime/Initial-D-Final-Stage/Episode-001?id=68271
@ 12:55 a spectator compares the AE86 Hatch (Takumi's) to the AE86 Coupe (Shinji's) You find out that they are used for different purposes, Hatch = Circuit Racing/ Coupe = Rally Cross.
@ 16:28 Eiji Kubo discovers the secret of Shinji's technique through Shinji's Mother. She explains that it has been about 10 years, since they have been driving in Hakone. Shinji is 15 years old, so we can assume he grew up there.
@ 17:47 Shinji's Mother reveals that Shinji started driving are around 5th or 6th grade.
@ 19:45 Shinji's Mother randomly comments that the coupe AE86 was her LATE HUSBAND's treasured car.
@ 19:55 She continues to rant about her husband's past and that he was a RALLY Driver. Hence why she has knowledge regarding techniques.

Clue:
-In the past Bunta's friend Masashi Suzuki was entrusted by Bunta to find him a new suitable Car. Masashi returns to Bunta with the Subaru Impreza WRX STI Coupe Type R Version V (GC8) a highly rare, RALLY type of Car. Bunta could have retired as RALLY driver in the past, before Shinji was born.
-The 86 coupe is a treasured car in Shinji's family, just as it is in Takumi's.
- Shinji grew up on the Hakone, and is extremely skilled on his home course just as Takumi was at Akina.
-Shinji began driving at a very young age, just like... Takumi. By now you should realize that they have similar traits.
-When Shinji's mother mentions her Husband, she quoted "That was my LATE husband's treasured car. This opens the door to a possibility that she has at least two spouses in her life.

Deeper into the Details.
Initial D Manga 675
@ pg 8 she explains more about how Shinji grew up, slightly different from Takumi's but towards the same path.

Piecing the puzzles
-2nd stage Wataru assumes that Bunta works in a Racing Industry due to his "Connections"
-3rd stage Natsuki reminds Bunta of a female he once knew in the past (Similarities between the appearance of Natsuki and Shinji's mother are very close)
-3rd stage Bunta reveals that he has EXPERIENCED a similar emotional phase like his son, Takumi.
-Final Stage Shinji's Mother mentions her late Husband was a Rally driver
-Fact: Bunta drives a car built for Rallies and is well connected with Masashi, able to get a group A engine.

Conclusion: Bunta could be this "late" husband/rally driver. He could have gone through a depression in during his past and strayed away from his loved one, just like Takumi's love story. It could be possible that there was a love triangle that caused this separation since there are multiple love triangles through out the whole anime (Takumi's, Itsuki's, Iketani's, Etc...) But the biggest clue is the color of the hairs between Bunta and Shinji, Takumi and Shinji's Mother. Takumi and Shinji's mother have the same eye coloration. People could assume that Shinji's mother looks way TOO young, but since Shinji is clarified to be 15 years old, she would have to be at least be around the age of 32-35. But lets assume that she could actually be Takumi's mother so since Takumi is 19, she could actually be late 30s or early 40s. As for Bunta's age, it has never been clarified but knowing that Yuichi (Bunta's best friend) is 43 and Masashi is in his 40s we can assume that Bunta is actually between early to mid 40s since they are very close colleagues. YET WHY DOES HE LOOK SO OLD? well it could be simple because in each of his appearances, HE IS ALWAYS SMOKING A CIGARETTE. Cigarettes accelerate your aging process making people look a lot older than they are. Does Initial D use Real-world Facts? yes they always have been precise about their racing aspects with a minimal twist for that Fujiwara zone. But the fact that whenever a cameo of the mysterious RALLY driver appears, his face is always blocked or hidden, screams "could that be BUNTA?!!!" well it seems that we'll have to find out after the "race" XD

I'm not a native englisch speaker, but if I'm right "late" means "dead" in english.
So Bunta can't be the "late" husband of Shinjis mom, because he is still alive.

The question is, what was the word used? Did they actually say "late" or was it some other word in Japanese that was just translated as "late"? We could be talking about a synonym for "past" here, which would mean a world of difference.

Exactly. Could someone clarify that translation?

On the other side of the table, Takumi only mentioned his mother one time (Third Stage and the accompanying manga chapter) as being "gone" and leaving it at that. It's too vague to call.

otsukaresama desu, Mad David.

Since it is more clear to say that Shinji's father is "dead"

The theory of the love triangle is now in session, there have been multiple love triangles through out the series and from going through each of these stages it seems that each stage has a deeper meaning behind them. Stage 3, Bunta shows that he can relate to Takumi's emotions very closely, Bunta sees Natuski and is reminded of a FEMALE. Somewhere along the movie Takumi does mention "Mother" now isn't it strange to see all of these just compiled into one movie without any other answers behind them? From what we have learn now, the theory of Shinji's Mother could be Takumi's still stands. The dead rally driver maybe someone Bunta knew and was either a friend or a rival. During stage 3 Bunta did reference his past of depression and anxiety, could it be the reason why he is now a tofu guy? Tho Ken Kogashiwa is a rival, the dead driver could have been a rival on a different scale. What if Bunta had one last epic race against this rally driver? And this rally driver had an accident? Tho people who spin out and crash get lucky and magically come out safe, this theoretical race could have had a different ending. What if this 86 battle is a grudge match just like the rivalry of the SW20, Kai Kogashiwa. Something big might be coming and it could be alot bigger than the final stage race. Thanks for all your insights and opinions, this getting exciting!

Shinji's mom could have lied, no? She said "dead husband" just so she won't assume that her husband LEFT, inciting that maybe she was a bad wife and so...

Could be... Why would they have to sensor the "dead" driver's face if it has no significance.Either way Takumi's mother has to have brown hair, Shinji's dad has to have black hair

While I'd love to be a dick and say that she might not be saying it in a literal sense, "shinda" is a word used to indicate death. There's no metaphor-ing my way around it. sad.gif

What if "dead" was supposed to have meant "dead beat" lol. I think this is very possible, it actually made sense to me.

No, because the word used means "dead", not deadbeat, not missing, nothing else. It's a word used to indicate death.

There is earlier clue, 1st stage episode 4 "Into the battle"
This was said just after the start of first race(86 vs fd):
"...that it has tranny gears for a rally."

While watching it first time i thought it was upgrade to race in akina but acquiring those might be easier if Bunta had rally background, or possibly spare parts from rally times.

Great job! I knew I had missed many other points in other stages but I never thought of any in 1st. Yes the gear ratios do play an important role, in other words even mentioning the word rally is already enough to support Bunta being an EX Rally. Thanks for your insight!

So this is the "Bunta-Timeline"?

1. Bunta was a Rally Driver
2. Bunta got married
3. Bunta quit being a Rally Driver (because of his Wife ?)
4. Bunta opens the Tofu Shop
5. Buntas Wife (Shinjis Mom ?) gave birth first to Takumi and than to Shinji
6. Buntas Wife left and takes Shinji with her
7. Bunta became a "Drift Racer" with the AE86 on Mount Akina
8. Bunta retired as a Racer and Takumi take over

I think Bunta never was a Rally Driver, he was a Racer (with the AE86) on Mount Akina from the start, than he got married, quit racing and opens the Tofu Shop because of his wife.
After his wife gave birth to Takumi she left Bunta and was never seen again.

If Bunta ever was a Rally Driver and Shinjis Mom was his wife, than why did he stop being a Rally Driver ? Shinjis Mother never was againts the Job of her husband, so if Bunta really was her husband there was no reason for him to stop beeing a Rally Pilot and open a Tofu Shop

I'm sorry but you kind of have to understand what he said about himself when he was talking to Natsuki during stage 3. We find out that he may have had gone through a depression phase because something bad might of happened, to see this more clearly it will be in stage 3, @ 1:09:50 - 1:12:54 carefully listen to what he says. Maybe something happened during his time of rally which is why he said those things to Natsuki. If you read the speculation about how he could have been an EX rally then it could be even more understandable? The point is this is just to come up with ideas through the clues in each stage. It's just for fun, nothing truly serious but you kind of have to believe that anything is possible... The twist are every where. Well thanks anyway. And to be honest there's a way to prove that Takumi was born before Bunta got the 86 but we'll do that on another time when it's completed. Anyway Bunta is a very clever guy, he most likely used the Tofu deliveries to make sure that his skills improve or maintained at his best. When he gives Takumi the water, it indicates that he understand the properties of G-Force through smooth driving. And in that case, you don't just learn this from school or anything like that through education. Anyway here's something to explain the water technique beginning @ 0:20seconds youtube.com/watch?v=-B6CtujEtUU. Initial D has been very resourceful, almost nothing is put in randomly. The tofu is probably just a way for Bunta to drive his car and deliver them as fast as possible, like Takumis training. It could be just a way to escape and reminisce his past. Well just take your time trying to understand these things, it is worth it to actually watch the scenes.

Had to take another look, she never saw takumi(atleast not shown in videos), only 86 when shinji saw wings. Also takumi might be grown up to unrecognizing. Also she may not overheard his name yet. I could bet she hears his name and recognises it in episode 3 or 4.

Either way guy in picture looks more like ken than bunta.
When bunta is throwing keychain out, he dont actually specify what 86 is he talking about.
Very big clue is missing tho, what is Shinji's moms name?
