I just can't get excited over this. It's a teaser, but, weird cross-guard darkside light saber aside it's all recycled material. I understand it's not a prequel but I still can't wash the bad taste of the newer movies out of my mouth - in spite of liking them as a kid.

Posted by: Tuskano Dec 1 2014, 09:19 PM
Apparently someone said the saber was canon... but since Lucas had said none of the books were ever canon... we get sh*t like these coming up. I can't look forward to a true Star Wars movie when I know Jedi Jesus will be coming around the corner.

Bringing this back since we're ever closer to release and Disney is starting to ramp up the promotions.

Marvel started a new canon Star Wars comic series in January that takes place between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back. Two issues in, it's brilliant. The art style is very well done and the story is energetic.

Marvel is also getting Darth Vader and Princess Leia comic series' on shelves. Vader hit shelves earlier this month, while Leia starts with two issues in March. I've seen a preview of Vader and it's shaping up to be pretty awesome. His first appearance has him holding an audience in Jabba's palace, mirroring the opening scene from Return of the Jedi.

Merchandise is being announced in anticipation of the movie coming later this year. The glaring item coming up for sale is a Darth Vader helmet, bringing up the rumor that somebody stole the helmet and it'll be showing up in the film. That, or Luke somehow snatched it from the pyre and nobody noticed.

Cecilia and I are going through the Bluray set to get up to speed on the lore. smile.gif

There were no spoilers here, but this is a slightly sped-up interview JJ Abrams had with Howard Stern a few days ago. I was pissed that he didn't answer the question about Vader's helmet, either because he couldn't due to secrecy, or because Howard won't shut the fuck up about "this is nerd trivia".

Merchandise sales have spiked after reviews of the movie came out yesterday. It is becoming increasingly hard to find certain action figures and Funko vinyls post-premiere.

Somebody got one of the Smuggler's Bounty subscription boxes and sold the Funko vinyls to my local comic store. I managed to get the exclusive chrome Captain Phasma for a decent price as a result. Ebay sales are not as kind, but I'm not in it for resale value. I just like collecting shit.

Saw it in 3D. Don't watch it in 3D. The blur effect necessary for the glasses to work properly adds a slew of screen tearing and depth of field issues to the movie that end up distracting more than entertaining. The Star Wars branded glasses are $5 on top of the free RealD set you get with a ticket and look pretty goofy. Ceci wore Kylo Ren. I wore Captain Phasma. We both looked like dorks.

I won't discuss anything plot related from the movie until many weeks from now when everybody has had the chance to sit down and watch it.

For now, I will say that I love Kylo Ren. Great character. Flawed but powerful. Destined to become far stronger and darker in the next one. Kick ass lightsaber.

Posted by: SgtXDNX Dec 18 2015, 10:50 PM
Really? IMAX Laser 3D looked pretty awesome, didn't notice any issues with it at all.

And yeah, totally in agreement about Kylo. Looking forward to seeing how they handle him, reminds me a lot of Mannequin Skywalker except actually done well. laugh.gif

IMAX Laser 3D is a completely different (better) tech than the standard RealD bullshit I sat through.

Posted by: 207 Dec 19 2015, 07:40 AM
i'll likely see this movie soon but i'll be seeing it it good old 2D version with no frills. 3D movies strain my eyes with or without the 3d glasses.

Posted by: Tessou Dec 19 2015, 08:11 AM
You can't watch this movie in 3D without the glasses. The technology requires a blur effect to make the glasses work on any scene that utilizes 3D, so it'll be very hard on the eyes without glasses. There was only one scene in TFA that looked really good in 3D, and that was a Star Destroyer looking like it was popping out of the screen. All of the other 3D shit was just depth of field trickery.

I'm watching again in 2D on Monday.

i agree on that point. the glasses strain my vision when i have them on so i do once in a while remove them. both on and off 3d movie with glasses strain my eyes. i can tolerate the low speed scenes but when you have too many objects moving rather fast i need to put the glasses on.

TBH i find the 3D movies to be a fad, so are the motion sensor seats with built in speakers.

if i do go to a 3d movie i hope i remember to use my 2D glasses for the 3d movie. i got 2 sets of 3d glasses. i took out 1 right and 1 left lens and swapped them to make 2 sets of 2d glasses with the lens LL and RR. this is my back up plan and hopefully the main plan when i have no choice for 2d as theres only 3d movies of that film.

i think i know where i left my RR 2D set glasses.

I thought Kylo Ren killed Spinnee?

Posted by: Tessou Jan 4 2016, 05:01 PM
Kylo Ren killed very few people in the movie, which is strange considering he's trying to run alongside the Vader path of ruthlessness. All he's done that's truly horrible is betray Luke many years before VII. Within the boundaries of VII, he killed only two people. He should have killed Poe as soon as he got information out of him, and he definitely should have dispatched Rey as soon as she proved to be difficult/impossible to interrogate, but he didn't on both fronts, and lost the Starkiller Base as a result.

He's Anakin in episode II: hungry for more but hitting a wall on the way. He killed the one person he needed to in order to get over that wall, which is in line with Sith doctrine (kill somebody that is emotionally close to you), but then what? He got fucked up by a pissed off Wookiee and nearly died in a battle with Rey... just like the final battle in Episode II (Anakin-Dooku), albeit with the roles flipped in terms of experience.

I'm expecting an Episode V feel with VIII, where Rey will engage either Kylo Ren or Snoke far too early in their training and end up losing something in the process. I also believe Luke will face off against either of them at some point. Probably Snoke, since Luke would turn Kylo Ren into a carpet sample pretty quickly, being a Jedi Master whereas Kylo Ren is certainly not a master by any means. Will Luke sacrifice himself like Kenobi? I would hope not. The callbacks to previous entries shouldn't be too direct now that the first film got a lot of them out of the way.

Yes, three seconds of film are what the short term memory generation grabbed onto.

Yeah, because he was the only villain with any balls.

Boba Fett didn't have a ton of screen time, and he's one of the coolest badasses in the whole of Fiction.

How many characters with less than 60 seconds of total screen time can you name? For me, it's perhaps an embarrassingly long list.

Also, why is Andy Serkis playing Voldemort?

Posted by: Tessou Jan 8 2016, 02:05 AM
You're saying Kylo Ren has no balls? The dude killed Han Solo, ate a bowcaster shot without getting a hole blown in him (like your favorite stormtrooper) and nearly brought the Resistance down by himself, without the aid of Starkiller Base or backup of any sort throughout the film.

Face McPunchy Stormtrooper got killed by an Indiana Jones reference, and got a hole in his chest as his reward, yet the new age fandom latched onto his nonexistent "balls". The book that gives him (FN-2199) backstory even mentions that he's nothing special, being a pussy bitch that couldn't hack it when Phasma ordered him to kill a group of renegade asteroid miners. The official novelization barely gives him much mention aside from being rather effortlessly killed after an incredibly short battle (shorter even than in the film). He's insignificant, merely giving Finn and co. (minus Rey and BB8) something to do during the short battle on Takodana, so Kylo Ren could have an uninterrupted encounter with Rey.

Was it the stun baton that could miraculously block lightsabers? That's not new, either. Grievous' guards had staves that could easily block Obi Wan's lightsaber.

The animated Clone Wars had them before he was introduced in the movies as well (Or was it before the third movie?)

Also, the fandom has gotten so big that the star wars page dubbed him 'tr-8r' or something. So meh.

I wonder how long it'll be before it's released on dvd/bluray, maybe 6 more months?

It's also established that Mandalorian armor is naturally resistant to lightsabers, so Boba and Jango were already immune... except for the lack of neck protection for Jango. laugh.gif

As for BR/DVD release... May 2016 is my prediction.

My favorite storm trooper is TK-421. Followed by the snow troopers, then any of them who have a Wilhelm scream.

The only reason McPunchy is cool is because there's more acting in his brief time on screen than the rest of the total bad guy screen time. Phasma's part was completely underwritten, Kylo throws tantrums like a child, and the evil general guy, well, he wasn't that memorable. Plus, why is Voldemort in it?

I'm really unimpressed with Kylo's character. He reminds me too much of a 17 year old petulant little shit. I'm almost certain they're going to bring him back to the light side in a movie or two. Without killing him, I mean.

Kylo is supposed to be a mirror of Anakin in Ep II... untrained, wanting everything but incapable of getting it in his current state. He will turn into a new, ass kicking Vader by the conclusion of VIII, and all of you unwashed will start making excuses as to why you didn't pray at the altar when it was necessary, and instead only performed the laying of hands when it was convenient to your interests.

You lost me with that metaphor. My opinion might change as movies come out, but it stands for now.

I'm saying you have no faith, only looking at the superficial.

Please, and I do not say this with condescension, read the novelization of the movie. It takes the shooting script and expands upon it in many places, making for a better Episode VII.

I'm sure it's better. The book is always better.

I don't care though, the movie is a bit of a letdown.

With the impossible hype leading up to it, anybody would be let down. I went in without hype, and came out satisfied. It's new Star Wars.

What book are we talking about again?

But i sort of agree, Kylo will be a badass, it'll take some time, but he'll be up there with Vader in 'evil motherfucker' villain.

The novelization of Episode VII. It dropped on shelves in physical form a few days ago, but the audiobook and ebook versions came out way back when the film released.

Written by the same guy that wrote the phenomenal Splinter of the Mind's Eye, the very first Expanded Universe title, back in 1978.

The guy is a pretty prolific author, he even wrote (well as a ghostwriter for George Lucas) the novelization of A New Hope back in 1976.

I really liked the expanded universe and have had more than a few books to follow the general storylines loosely. In the books, it was still Han's son who betrays Luke, Jacen Solo who turned into Darth Caedus and his twin sister defeats him so this plotline was followed in the movie. Though Han dies in the movie instead of Chewie in the books. Luke had a son named "Ben" (who didnt betray him) and was supposed to be the heir to his legacy so when the movie came out and Kylo was called "Ben.", it was a nice twist. It was as if saying "Hey readers, thought you saw that coming?"

So now I still cant say who Rey is. Being as she somehow is in tune with the Falcon and gets along with Han says he may be related to Han (following the book that she is Kylo/Jacen's twin sister), but the feel of the movie is she is luke's daughter. Nice one, George.

Yes I know, the movies will now cause the books to be non-canon but they still follow a lot of the plotlines. Its pretty exciting and cant wait for the new movie. smile.gif

Expanded Universe was renamed "Legends" months ago. It's all officially non canon. Disney wants to have a fresh playing field so as not to collide with EU stuff.

Which is a shame cause some of the EU stuff was pretty decent, heck apparently they were initially going to name The Force Awakens as Shadow of the Empire (similar to the interquel EU novel that took place between Empire and Jedi).

Have a place in line for the novelization at my local library, so should be an interesting read.

Well looks like Episode VIII is delayed by 6 months, so we won't get it until December 2017. sad.gif

Luke needs more time to brood before taking that lightsaber.

Heh... tongue.gif

It still kinda sucks cause it would have been sweet cause we would have had two Star Wars movies within around half a year of each other (Rogue One - Dec 2016, Episode VIII - May 2017).

I finally saw the movie.

Great movie, never a dull moment.

Only problem was the ending sequence was SUPER CHEESY! unamused.gif

The only thing I am disappointed in is that they wiped everything clean, which means the Zahn trilogy didn't happen. sad.gif

Seeing as how this is the most active Star Wars thread, I figured I'd share this pretty neat James Bond-style credit sequence that a guy named Kurt Rauffer did for The Empire Strikes back, it's pretty cool, plus he used the song that should have been the theme for Spectre, coincidentally also named Spectre! tongue.gif
