[Initial D World]

Do you remember in Fifth Stage Episode 4 after Bunta took the 86 for a spin on Mt. Akina, he said something to the extent of having one last thing to do for Takumi. But that thing was never revealed now that the manga has ended. But it doesn't stop us fans from speculating what it is.

First of all, we'll provide the original script of this scene in Japanese and an accurate English translation, because apparently there had been a wide spread of misinterpretation of this scene. Here it is:

(The balance is better than expected.)

たいしたもんだぜ高橋涼介ってのは..
(Takahashi Ryousuke is quite a guy..)

短期間で これだけ 足を仕上げるセンスはオレには ないね..
(I don't think I can tune the suspension settings like this in such a short period of time..)

これなら かなりの... ところまでいけるな
(It really can get significant better result with this..)

だが おそらく 最後まではムリだ..
(..but probably not possible to last till the end..)

しょうかねえ 準備だけはしておくか...
(It can't be helped. I guess I have to be prepared.)

オレがあいつにしてやれることは..
これが最後になるかな..
(That'll be the last thing I can do for Takumi.)

For those of you who have been following the manga 'til the very end, there is no mention anywhere of what this "last thing" that Bunta prepared for Takumi. Many fans thought it was simply the roll-cage that Bunta installed. It is NOT the roll-cage!! Project.D is the one that upgraded and finetuned the 86's suspension settings and installed a roll-cage for it. On the forums, many people have commented on this and many of the answers are quite interesting.

1. An official race between Bunta and Takumi. Bunta will let Takumi choose the car he wants to use and Bunta will use the other car to defeat Takumi.
2. Bunta is going to pull some strings and get Takumi a pro racing career.
3. Possible upgrades to the 86 that'll make it even faster. (GT wing, further weight reduction, an even better engine... etc.)
4. In Third Stage, after Takumi graduated, Bunta said Takumi can do anything he wants. So perhaps Bunta might give Takumi some money, enough for him to start his own auto shop, or start a racing team.

With the series came to an end, #1 and #3 are out. At this point, #2 seems like the most plausible scenario. Bunta pulled some strings and gotten Takumi some admission letters to professional racing teams. Well, that's what we think. What do you think Bunta's last thing for Takumi was? I think we have to rule out the possibility of any enhancements, Project D has already improved the car to an extent that Bunta never could.
