Thanks guys. Will do when I get a chance, maybe take it somewhere more photogenic. Right now the battery is in the Xterra which I'll use til it runs out of gas lol. Really need to get the Z its own battery. Those things are getting crazy expensive, though.

Welp, heres how it is to drive with my makeshift mount and uncooperative Droid 3. Bonus points for spotting a vehicle thats not Dodge/Ford/Chevy. I think there was a Toyota Pickup or 4Runner in there somewhere. Was shifting at like 4k RPM so I never really got it deep into the powerband but it was fun.

Aaaaand my alternator is dead, I think. On my way home from an event today and my gauge in the back was reading 12.8 volts and slowly whittled down to 12. The one in the dash went from about 13.3 down to 12.7 (it was always read a little low, even when it was new). I've only had the thing for like 2 years, and it has a lifetime warranty, so its just a matter of wasting my time taking it off and trading it in. Tomorrow I'll check the thing with a multimeter and if it shows any signs of low voltage, I'll pull it off and have the local parts store bench test it. But multimeter will be pretty clear if any gauges are off, and that may be all it is. Come to think of it, there has been a supercharger-like whine coming from the engine bay lately that I haven't been able to pin down, and that may have been the alternator.

EDIT: Looks like possibly a false alarm. The capacitor in the back failed and was causing havoc. Well at least I got a few months out of it. Still got that supercharger-like whine, though. Possibly power steering? Crossing my fingers and hoping the uber detergents in the new oil didn't reveal a weak oil pump. Oil pressure still good, though. Steering is getting stiffer but still works and doesn't whine when I turn. Blah.

As expected, with the lifters working a little better, I'm getting closer to the correct valve lift and my MPG have taken a hit. Not bad, but its gone from 33mpg to about 24. 3rd gear is great, though. I've never owned a vehicle that could pass slow people on the highway with such ease. 45-85mph (the powerband for 3rd gear) is incredibly quick now. Think I need to do some maintenance on the front shocks as there is a little bit of noise, like there is some wiggle room in the shock cartridge now, but they still work fine, just clunk a little on the rebound. I'm sure the 5-massive-potholes-per-every-500-feet Ohio roadway isn't helping anything.

And hey, the pop is back. I dunno how, but if you wring it out to 6k rpm, apart from sounding glorious imo, it pops once, a big flame out the exhaust again. Had someone follow me and confirmed it. I think thats a little odd, since it has a cat. Probably the very old EFI with its on/off tps. The only way it knows how much fuel to add is basically the MAF, rpm and the O2 sensor to some extent. With the headers, the O2 sensor is placed so that it only reads one cylinder, and with the short intake and all the extra airways (PCV, EGR, 2 different idle controllers) taken off, it can't react fast enough. So the way the ECU works, you hit 6k and let off to shift or slow down, the TPS tells it to idle if you let off all the way, and its still feeding a crap-ton of fuel into it for almost a full second, then expecting the secondary or idle air to help out on rundown when the throttle is fully closed with no other air coming in. The cams are probably only increasing it. Also, it will probably ruin the cat.

TL:DR Flames are fun.

Haven't updated in a while. Life issues. But the car goes on. The in-laws are coming soon, so the battery got shifted back into the Xterra for them to use. The Z sits alone in the garage until I can afford a battery and to renew the registration.

The good news about it, though, is I was able to take it to a dyno. Was very reluctant still to let someone rev the nuts off my car. However, I got confirmation of power.
203whp@5600RPM, 218ft-lbs@3800RPM
So I broke the 200whp barrier N/A, making it a lot more potent than a stock Z31 Turbo which is at least something. I feel like my work has been justified. I'm straining the hell out of the injectors, though. They are pretty much running at max with a 15lb pressure increase. Will have to upgrade if I want more, or to ease the strain.
The sad part is that my wife threw away the evidence (along with several gift cards, credit cards, and a wallet lol), so I'll have to go back sometime. All I was looking for was confirmation that what I did made a difference anyway, so I may not go back.
I guess if I have clothes that smell like car fluids, they get thrown out no matter whats in the pockets. Lesson learned. Hard.

Just thought I'd say that I hadn't been driving it since the registration ran out 3 months or so ago, I've been using the auto EJ22 Subaru and the Xterra. So when I got it back to street legal today and took it for a spin and its even better than I remember. You know when you drive a spectacular car and end up shaking from the adrenaline rush? Yeah. Good times. Still loving the Lancia Stratos-sounding off throttle at high rpms. Bonus, the new Ohio plate style matches the car perfectly.

Good thing winter is coming and it doesn't have the heater core hooked up or anything other than the summer tires *sigh*. I always seem to get things settled with it right when I can't use it.

Thats true, I actually got one of those heaters last year just in case but the charging system in a Z31 is pitiful(60A alternator)and it doesn't really put out much heat. I could always take the 15 mins and hook the heater back up, but now that its solid, I don't want to fiddle with it much. Besides, I think theres a leak in the heater core, and I know from all the interior work and center gauges how much of a PITA it is to take the whole dash out. Anyway, I'll give it exercise on warm days for as long as I can. I think I'm still better off than my friend with the 67 Beetle and fubar heating system.
