From what I know, ID never even aired in the US. Only on DVD could we see it (or at least online). What are your thoughts as to what would've happened if the anime even got a TV showing? How would you've felt if it *did* air?

I guess we'd have more people putting up vids of them "STREET DRIFTING YO!" and nearly hitting other motorists, just like that one IDW'er in the past who necessitated the "don't talk about street racing" rule over in the auto section.
After all, there are people out there who think doing dumb stuff in traffic makes you a badass and that they can pull off all sorts of advanced vehicular maneuvers on the first try.

I wonder if street racing culture in the US would be less bad if The Fast and the Furious didn't paint a wildly exaggerated picture of tough guys running from cops and swerving through traffic. The movie was dumb fun, but the automotive stupidity it inspired: not so much.

FnF ignited it and was the worst offender, though I doubt Initial D would have had much of an effect.

What network would air it? If it came out in 2005 when Tokyopop was advertising the DVDs, it would be sitting against Inuyasha on Adult Swim. It'd be a massacre.

Sci-Fi Channel during AniMonday maybe. Adult Swim had the rights since they aired in in Aussieland for a time, so they'd be the most likely but as you said, what it would have been replacing is a tough question.

Initial D's anime came to the US a few years too late to latch on to the tuner craze (~2000-2003). If they'd thrown it on television right after Fast and the Furious hit in 2001, we'd still be saddled with First Stage instead of that year's Third Stage movie.

Indeed it was just after the initial craze, but remember 2005 and 2006 saw NFS Most Wanted and Carbon, and those games still did very well for a reason.

As much as I like Initial D, I have a feeling it probably wouldn't have been much of a success, especially when you realize it's sort of a niche anime in the first place.

It might have benefitted, as Tessou suggests, if the show was brought over during the tuner craze resulting from The Fast and the Furious, but who knows whether that crowd would really get into an animated TV series about mountain racing.

Honestly, Initial D would do well even today, maybe even better than it would have 10+ years ago, what with anime being immensely more popular with casuals and normalfags these days. And among the medium in general, Initial D in particular is a very casual-friendly series. Just look at all those Deja Vu memes on YouTube.

If they actually had Initial D come out on TV I wonder if it might actually have made the poser/rice scene worse than it already is because you'd have had a wider audience. We'd have even more "I'm a car enthusiast because I can identify that car is Toyota 86." and not much more. One has to wonder, if Initial D comes up on TV, is someone who doesn't care about cars or racing, would they watch that?

The average view flipping through channels? Not likely. The average anime fan? Most likely. A large portion of Initial D's fanbase is general anime fans.

If anyone previously has said Initial D would most likely air on Adult Swim. I second that. I could also see it popping up on that Velocity Network channel (if that's still a thing, I never had it)

Is Initial D THAT niche though? A lot of people like cars. Racing is a type of entertainment that casuals like. NASCAR, F1, a lot of people tune it occasionally. Rally is more niche though.

Initial D has strong early episodes to catch people's attention, as opposed to other shows that might start slowly. Plus who doesn't like good music lol.

Wangan Midnight is good too, but that one might be more niche, with heavy emphasis on tuning and mechanics. Initial D is a lot more casuals friendly.

Exactly. There's a reason Maximum Tune is (I think) more popular than the series itself.

I notice people who enjoy actual writing and character development will watch/read Wangan Midnight though even if they may know nothing about cars. My suitemates ended up watching all of Wangan Midnight. They are not car people in the least. While the minutiae of what the cars go through is more esoteric, the characters are more human and have more complex interactions with one another. Eventually there's not really any character development in Initial D and it became DBZ with cars but obviously we mentioned casuals and when you just want action and aren't interested in getting too deep, then yeah ID.

It's interesting to think about.

Maybe 12 years ago, we would've sat down to Adult Swim at 10PM and the show wouldve opened up to this:
YOUTUBE ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cdKtDK7cTg )

and watching it would've been like this
YOUTUBE ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjbJ2IdY6B0 )

In 2005, with the tokyopop dub, it wouldn't have caught on. It's a confusing mess to watch.

The interesting thing is, if it aired today on Adult Swim with the Funimation dub, it would be a hit. There's a retro cool factor to the show now that people seem to embrace the weird 90's CGI. Plus, more people nowadays are informed about the meme cars and want to listen to the meme music.

In 2 years time, I think you might see a resurgence in popularity with Initial D in the US, it won't reach 2006-2008 levels but it might be notable. I base this completely on where our car communities are heading and what they think is cool, then add a sprinkle of our fixation for the retro, and mix it with how Eurobeat and Initial D is being introduced to a more mainstream audience.

I watched here on { in Australia } and each episode was broken into four parts ( 5 min each ) to fit into a 20 minutes show and 10 min commercial slot, as you can quess it made it very disjointed and the Tokyopop dub with that crazy 'slang' didn't help it any, add into that the late timeslot for it and it is no wonder it didnot do much good, i had to buy the dvd's to make sense out of it.

Good point about the dub quality. I own the Funimation dub (after watching the subbed torrents 13 years ago) and the Funimation feels a LOT more "in character", and the mood is preserved due to keeping the Eurobeat.

Watching the early race of Takumi vs Keisuke with the low volume non-Eurobeat music in the Tokyopop version... WTF

I didn't watch much of the Tokyopop translations, I know the arcade racing game using Tokyopop translations like KT and other weird names. I like "Smiley Sakai" but other than that, it was out of place.

Smiley Sakai isn't a Tokyopop name. He has that nickname in the original work itself, because he seems like he's smiling when he tenses up.

Hmm, I dunno, I get the feeling I got amongst other, regular anime fans I know that the show is very, very niche, then again that could be a generation gap thing.

I do wonder if Funimation ever explored having Initial D on TV in North America. As already mentioned in this thread, their dub of the series is far, far better than the Tokyopop version, heck, as somewhat of a subtitle purist, it's a bit hard to admit that at times I've found myself watching the dub rather then the subtitled version.

As far as I know, Funimation did not pursue a TV deal for the series. They rarely do for anything that isn't a guaranteed big money show like Dragonball or One Piece. They're a smart company that only takes that kind of risk on a sure thing. Even DBGT brought in enough money to buy a gold boat to put in the front lawn.

Playing it safe does have its advantages, but I'm surprised they haven't even bother with making calculated/safe risks with some of the titles they have under their belt.

Possibly because television is a dying market against the ongoing storm of streaming media. They have their Funimation Channel streaming service which directly pays them, instead of going through shitty broadcasting deals. By appealing straight to their market, especially with simulcasts and dub/sub options on the site, there's no need to attempt to go to TV. Their shows will go right to whoever wants them. Initial D is on there. If you like it, watch it. They'll see the analytics and know the size of the audience without having to look at nielsen ratings (which are not concrete due to utilizing a sample size and not actual viewer numbers).

The thing is they offer their old stuff for free (well with ads, but an ad blocker extension can fix that) on their streaming service and heck, I wonder how much value they place on it since they recently signed a distribution deal with Crunchyroll and now some of their titles are on Crunchyroll.

Now Crunchyroll has a smart business plan with regards to the titles they offer - like Funimation's service they offer new episodes to paying subscribers, but access to older shows differs. On Crunchyroll episodes of currently airing shows are available for free to non-paying viewers for either 3 or 4 months from the air date (though this might differ elsewhere as they started this a few months ago for Canadian viewers due to the value of the Canadian dollar decreasing), afterwards those episodes, like the rest of the older shows in Crunchyroll's catalogue, become available to those with a paid subscription.
