so i just got a 2000 celica gt-s
and just wanted to understand more about
alloy wheels and what to do about "rust"

from some poking around, my understanding
is that alloy wheels "corrode" instead of "rust"
...then im wondering what this stuff all over
the wheels is, b/c it looks an awful lot like
rust to me (see photo)

also, regardless of what this stuff is,
is there any way to get rid of it?
more importantly, does it pose any sort of
safety risk?

(side note: im not 100% sure that these
are alloy wheels, but from the gt-s spec
sheet, it seems like it...but how would i be
able to tell for certain?)

If the rims arent rusting than most likely its just junk brake dust or rust from the rotors.

if i hadnt read that alloy wheels could rust,
then i would have just called it rust...
i havent tried polishing it off yet b/c im not
sure if thats the best course of action

but if you look at the attached close-up
it really does look like "normal" rust
*confused*

The dark bits are brake dust, and the cobbly bits is corroded wheel.

Time for a new set of wheels or to refinish those.

Its the rust on the brake dust itself.

Yep, just one more reason to wash your car regularly.

Ok kinda old post but nevermind.
Its rust/corrisuin,you can see it bubbling from underneath. Sand it with a 240 wet and dry or maybe 150 depending how bad. Might need filling, p38 is good stuff. Sand again. Move upto 500s, then 1200s, prime, might need flatting with a 2000. Get some ally paint colour of your choice and then clear coat. G3 it, wax it, jobs a gooden!

Yeah, you have to admit his post was the most useful of any. First person to even try explaining a procedure to the guy.
This thread makes me want to give my wheels some attention. Not that they're in any kind of poor shape right now.

I guess you're not well versed in unwritten forum protocol? You don't bump ancient threads, especially current issue threads, it's considered cluttersome. The dude got his answer and was done, not to mention he made 12 posts and never came back, there's no way he's ever going to read that.

But if that's the attitude you're going to have when someone tells you off for "coming to the rescue" 7 months too late, I'm sure you'll last a long time around here.

i'm back fear2.gif ...and reading...just fyi
osakaboy, i appreciate your input, regardless of time delay, haha

anyhow, since this thread has been resurrected, i figured i would just post a pic of what i ended up doing to my wheels (see attachment)

given the awful state that they started off in, im definitely satisfied w/how they turned out using only meguiar's all wheel cleaner and permatex wheel restoration kit

i figure theyre really not worth putting more effort in, since i might as well just get new rims anyways (if anyone is looking to offload a set of lighter-weight 17" 5x100s, let me know)

It most certainly is not... But sarcastic posts like that get taken the wrong way around here all the time, so you have to watch yourself. wink2.gif

Well I am also confused because rims can't rust the wheel, infect the breaks are responsible for that. So basically you need to change the set of tires to make it perfect as it was.

It almost looks like he was using wheels and tires as the same, but that does not make any sense either.
