Note: please vote seriously.

After a hearty and heated discussion amongst staff this evening, a curious idea was put forth: just how should IDW's administration be determined? By the site owner, or by the people? Or should we pick a random member number out of a hat each week? You decide! While not being a concrete, definitive decision, the results of this poll will be taken into consideration. Your vote will (hopefully) go a long way in determining how we (mods as well by extension of admins, note!) serve you in the future.

I won't vote here.
To be honnest, I'm fine with Perry's decisions. Call me "Status-Quo-Man", I don't care.

Nope. Perry is the owner. He is the King. He is the ShotCaller. He is El Chapo. He can do what he wants with the Admin Team. This is his house. We are all guests.

Ah shit, tried to vote no but clicked yes by accident. Sorry.

I'd say no because the site belongs to its owner. He can do whatever the hell he damn well pleases, although that also includes allowing 'democracy'.

To be honest, I'm not sure if we'd have all that many people voting if we did hold polls for the admin spot.

I don't see any major problems with how things are currently done though. I don't know about all of IDW history, but the last few admins appointed certainly haven't been bad, there hasn't been any sort of warnhammer/banhammer 40k abuse either, and any such abuse probably won't happen in the near future either because the current system here doesn't really allow for it. So far I'm thinking having the owner and mod team determine this site's administration will continue to work good enough.

However, if the owner and mod team did end up finding more than one appropriate candidate for the spot, I guess then holding elections would definitely make it easier to pick who the admin would be. Voting "other" then.

Perry's vote is the only vote that counts anyway. He owns the site after all.

I don't even know why there was a vote to begin with. If it were my site, I'd want to appoint admins myself. I'd place people I trust in those positions.

So a big fat 'no' from me.

I don't see a reason to have us choose who to rule us anyway. Everything works out fine as of now. There is no need to change.

Woaw, it you want some troll "accidentally" deleting everybody's post and change my name to "qwertyuiop", sure! biggrin.gif

Have the admins/mods be chosen by Herr Perry and the rest of the team, but there's a bunch of complaints against one of the chosen few (within a staffing context, not just "I don't like X because Y") that's been put forward, take that into consideration and re-evaluate their place on the team.

Best of democracy and autocracy right there. biggrin.gif

Yes, because full on democracy has been working great in general for the world so far.[/sarcasm]

But I digress. Jake pretty much said it correctly. While popular opinion is a good way to see how one is viewed in the community, it must be considered alongside the actual actions that said admin/mod takes. Our little online community is too small in the scope of things to consider full blown democracy (especially since the only voices you'll ever hear at this rate are those of the active posters, and you may never get to hear the opinions of the newbies either because they don't want to be lambasted speaking up or because they don't really care either way, so we're back to square one on that point), and it becomes a mere popularity contest.

And frankly, I hate popularity contests when they decide how the place is going to be run.

This falls more under other instead of full out no.

A popularity contest does not a good site staff roster make.

If you need any proof, look at the consistent results of the forum awards for who should be a mod... Consistent top finishers are generally people who don't want a position or would not be a good fit for various reasons, no offense to them. Those who have been a good fit that have made it high onto that list generally end up making the roster regardless, so in a sense popular opinion has been taken into account, whether intentionally or if it just happened naturally.

Yet that category is the one that anybody seriously vies for. Look at the results, who campaigned for it, and who carries the badge for their trouble.

The awards may be a joke for the most part, but it's still a good indicator of trends and opinion.

I completely disagree, but there's no real way to prove either point without asking every voter if they were being serious, so I'll stand by what I said while leaving it at that.

I do not make mod team slot decisions. Perry is and always has been the sole authority on who he wishes to govern the site, except in rare circumstances where I or previous admins were given express authority to do so. I advise Perry on options, he comments (agree, disagree, skeptical), and then we share the results with the mod team for their input. It's a long process. Altering the team in any way can take months of careful work, and a misstep can end the process entirely.

In the past, there were instances where people were thrown onto the team without warning, with sometimes disastrous results. It's very risky to add somebody that would only cause chaos with existing staff due to existing rifts, or refuses to work as a team.

Ultimately, Perry's idea of what the site is going to be, is going to be. Right now we're in what he refers to as an archival mode. I can only say right now that the site and staff may see some changes within the next month or so, but there is nothing concrete at the moment. Some of the more intriguing comments from this and other recent threads have been met with a PM earlier today that the recipients are hopefully very happy about.

Don't just take it as "oh, it's more Tessou blowing smoke". You will have a formal response to this thread from the man himself in the near future.
