If your lights are turning on and not dimming when you try the ignition, it very well could be that your starter solenoid is not getting power. That's because the car is able to draw enough from the battery to power the lights/cd player etc. but not enough to get the engine turning over. I had this very problem due to corrosion on my battery terminals. This post has been edited by Mr. Shine on Jul 20 2010, 12:14 PM

A starter requires much higher power than lights and accessories. A loose or dirty battery connection may be able to transmit enough power to activate your lights and CD player, but when you go to turn the key, you'll hear the starter relay click but the engine will not turn over. If that were to happen, you'll notice your CD player and lights power down (the lights would dim slightly) momentarily as they would in a normal starting situation...except your car won't start.
