I bought a new laptop yesterday. The speaker is fine, but when I plug in headphones, there seems to be an annoying static sound present, even if i mute the master sound control. I tried two different headsets that work well in other laptops, but they produce the static sounds when I used it on my pc.

Any help? //

Weird, have you update your audio driver? Go ahead and run Windows Update. See if it finds any new audio driver. If that doesn't help, it might just be crappy hardware...

Are they noise-cancelling headphones with a battery pack? If the noise canceler is turned on, you will hear some static regardless of settings on your computer, as that's a hardware thing. You can just turn that off and it should go away.

Try what's suggested above by Perry and also let us know if it's a headset as described by Tessou.

If your headphones work fine in your PC without the issue then it's probably an issue with the port. If it's a new store-purchased lappy take it back and take your headphones to test on the replacement.

If the lappy is a second-hand laptop then it's a possibility that the port is damaged. An electronics tech can replace that if they have spare 3.5mm jacks in store or take it from off a damaged board.
