I know that the maximum for an avatar is 80x80, so i make my avatar smaller than that so i that i can have the right fit. yet it ALWAYS resets itself back to 80. how can i fix this?

You would have to set the dimensions yourself in the area that lets you set the dimenion of the avartar. If that doesn't seem to work, you can always ask an administrator to change it for you.
