Official Final Stage anime...'nuff said

Shūichi Shigeno's Initial D car-racing manga is inspiring an anime film, Shin Gekijō-ban Initial D (New Initial D the Movie), next summer. The manga's final battles will also be adapted into a new anime series called Final Stage. The "Young Magazine Dai Art Genga-ten 2013" event, which will run at Tokyo's Shibuya Hikarie complex starting July 26, will screen early footage from the film.

The manga follows Takumi Fujiwara, a high school boy with a natural talent for driving, in his racing pursuits on the public highways. The manga debuted in 1995, and Kodansha published the 46th book volume in January. The manga inspired several television anime series (including the Fifth Stage that just ran last year), a live-action film, several original video anime projects, and a successful game line.

This year's 34th issue Kodansha's Young Magazine is revealing on Monday that Shūichi Shigeno will end the manga in the following issue on July 29. The manga has been running for 18 years in the magazine, and Shigeno had revealed in March that he was heading toward the manga's finale.

This movie summing up the series is, for the most part, as I predicted in a recent post describing the likely conclusions to the series:

QUOTE (kyonpalm @ Jul 18 2013, 01:57 PM)
Alternatively, the OVA could be a big summary movie of everything in the entire series, and then ending will include the end of the Shinji race and the final chapter from the manga.

So I was pretty much right about that.

One thing that has me kind of confused is this "Final Stage" series. It says it will feature "the manga's final battles", so does that mean it will be a Battle Stage-type series, or what? Whatever the case, I can only hope it does justice to whatever material it works with. There could be hope for correcting the mess that was Fifth Stage... maybe.

In the end, I have to wonder how much any of this even matters, since the manga is going to get such in incomprehensibly shitty ending to begin with.

There are gods and deities in the world... They have blessed us with Final Stage. We must rejoice and celebrate! I personally can't believe its happening in a year. I'm pumped now! biggrin.gif

I hope it's more like that scene in Third Stage where Iketani and the gang were thinking about Takumi's battles during that first summer. That way it doesn't use up too much of the movie time. Just shows the highlights of each of the races throughout 5th Stage.

And maybe they'll be nice to us and include a Keisuke vs. Takumi race at the end of the movie. Kinda like how Third Stage included that short Ryosuke vs. Takumi race. It's pretty much the only optional race they could include, since a race against Bunta is out of the question. Unless they make Bunta show up in yet another new car. lol

I am pretty sure the movie will have some anime-only fillers. It's just a matter of if it'll be done tastefully. I hope Shigeno will give some advice to the production team and hopefully they redeem themselves this time. Please, make this good!!

Edit: Summer 2014... You know what, I think they are going to pull another 8-6 Day. Watch, I BET it's going to be 2014.8.6!! w00t2.gif

Im so excited for this biggrin.gif

I think itll have a flashback to the early days of Takumi, skilling doing his delivery runs and do a final sum up for the fans. Because clearly Shūichi Shigeno realized, that we are grateful for his continuation with the series and wants to provide us with a great memory, before we all start rewatching the complete 5stages for the nth time.

What the LONGEST anime with a theatrical release that you've seen? I hope it's long so we cover the last Kanagawa race PLUS stuff not covered in the manga (but still canon stuff that's made with Shigeno's approval)

By the way I managed to buy Buntas car before the manga ended (Type Ra STi Version 6 Limited Edition). happy.gif

It won't be. When they film the Live Action in Japan back in 2004~2005, everybody knew. Photos were leaked left and right. Now it's 2013, the moment they start to set up the movie set, the photos will be on the Internet within minutes. laugh2.gif

Space Battleship Yamato the Movie 5: Final Yamato. 175 minutes. No I'm not just picking that off of wiki, I've seen every single Yamato series and film to date.

Posted by: Jezza_HR Jul 21 2013, 11:17 PM
I'm curious as to if they will add anything else to the ending, like more interaction with Shinji after the race, Takumi spending more time with Itsuki, Iketani and Kenji before the final scene, Takumi speaking with Bunta about the fate of the 86, or maybe a final race (as has been mentioned previously) between Takumi and Keisuke. Either way, I hope they really fill in some of the blanks and give Initial D the send off it deserves.

Posted by: Burtonik Jul 22 2013, 12:15 AM
I've been with this series almost all of my life and it kind of saddens me that the series is finally ending D:. But I'm super stoked!!!!!!!! Even though 5th stage wasn't very good, I hope they redeem themselves with this one, especially with it being the final stage.

Where are people getting this 'Live Action' and 'PPV' nonsense from?

It's an animated film.

It's coming out in theaters.

Then it'll come out on DVD.

Considering none of Fifth Stage was released on BD, it's questionable whether or not it will.

Facts, eat them.

Theatrical Initial D Movie

No chance of PPV dude- Oh look N1 beat me to it.

So the movie's going to start right from the Takumi VS Shinji race? I guess they could stretch that one race out to around 60 or 90 minutes. Hope they come up with something decently written for the rest of it.

Here's hoping this isn't literally just an extended episode of Fifth Stage, with slightly better 2D animation, the same weirdly moving randomly teleporting cars, and the same sort of overall direction.

Here's my rough translation...

"Initial D" serialized for 18 years in manga ---
The legend is still not over!

New theatrical version of "Initial D" anime film adaptation decided!
Released in summer of 2014

The first public video will be released in "Young Magazine Original Art Exhibition 2013"

In addition, the production to draw the last battle in the anime series "Final Stage" has been decided!

So it looks like we do get a short anime series called "Final Stage" that continue where Fifth Stage left off. We are also getting an anime film adaptation that's being tentatively called the New Initial D The Movie that's coming out in summer 2014. There is no date on the "Final Stage" though. This is where it might get crazy, the 2-hour movie might actually redo some of the races shown in Fifth Stage with bigger production budget. Maybe they thought they screwed up also. Who knows.

More information should surface on the net by 7/26. Wait a few more days.

A new series and a all new movie? Sounds great smile.gif
I guess we have to wait until 2015 to see the movie then (until the bluray comes out) , or are there cam releases of movies in Japan too?

It's not clear exactly what it is from the promotion. All it says is, "The Anime Series too will represent the last battle in 'Final Stage'!" It doesn't say that Final Stage is a series. If it had, the phrasing would have been like 'TVシリーズでラストバトルを描く'. However, that's not what the image says. All it says is that the last battle, now that it's been covered in the manga, will be covered by the Anime in 'Final Stage'.

There's no additional information. Anyone saying otherwise--whether it's the first post of this thread, the official thread in Announcements or ANN--can't read Japanese.

So does this mean that the last battle in the manga is also the last battle of the series? So the animated movie will have no LATER battles? (like Takumi vs Keisuke 2 or Takumi vs Bunta) edit: Or maybe last could mean "most recent", in that case we might see new battles too

If the animated movie has a duration of 162 min or 175 min like the longest animated movies you guys listed, that would be cool. But if they don't show any NEW races, I think it might be around the 100 mins of Third Stage or shorter.

I would prefer a NEW race in Final Battle animated movie, but if they just show Takumi vs Shinji then a LOT of dialogue to wrap up all the unanswered plot questions that would be good too. Good but not great.

But personally, I think a theatrical released movie is something that MUST have eye candy/go out with a bang to keep the casual viewers interested. So I think we may see Takumi vs Keisuke or Takumi vs Bunta, at least one new race biggrin.gif

Yes it means that the last battle of the manga is the last battle of the series. It didn't say 'latest', it said last. Last. Final. The end. Period.

No, it's not going to have the same duration as Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya or Final Yamato. Period end of story. It'll be closer to Third Stage, because they clearly don't have the budget to put together a top-quality product.

Probably won't have the great look of Third Stage, though. They put a lot of work and love into that movie.

If it's a theatrical release it should look pretty good. I don't think they will put the same care in as Third Stage, but I remain hopeful. But then I did the same for Berserk and look what that got me dry.gif

^ Look at the Berserk manga... it's also full of facepalm. It's been over a decade and Guts is still basically right where he was after the crimson behelit incident.

I saw the recent Berserk movie treatments and thought the old anime series was better. Smooth animation and full frontal nudity doesn't make a new version better.

Oh, I'm a big fan of the Berserk manga, Miura has become so particular about his work that he takes so many breaks to get everything to his standard. The last chapter/episode release was back at Christmas as they're finally getting to the point in the manga where Casca regains her sanity. It's a very in depth story but the new films really bastardized a load of the characters. Studio 4C was the worst choice it would seem.

True, Fifth Stage wasn't a great step above Fourth Stage animation-wise, but then if you look back to Second Stage versus Third Stage there was a decent leap in quality there, I would hope for something similar here as they're putting all their creative efforts into one feature length production.

I see, thanks for the clarifications. Without a new race, they better go heavy on the story development and tie up any loose ends. Hope Mogi shows up too.

In the past, they seemed to have more 'love'. Now they don't seem to care. Unless a completely different studio is handling the movie, it's practically guaranteed to be the same thing as Fifth Stage but longer.

Let's hope they give this the love it deserves, since Initial D could still be a fairly decent draw for a theatrical release if it's marketed correctly. Saying that though, the animation for Fifth Stage wasn't bad, it was the immense chopping of scenes they did to finish it that seemed to make it the mess it was.

Oh you mean besides the 3D being just like it was in Fourth Stage, the character designs all being generic molds of the same basic facial layout, and all the 2D artwork being completely flat and static? Let's not even mention all the times they screwed up sound effects.

But no, you're right, the only thing that made Fifth Stage a mess was chopping some scenes here and there. derp.gif

I had no real issues with the CGI animation, since I liked how it worked in Fourth Stage. Yes, it would have been nice to get an update but it's not exactly horrendous, certainly not in the same way that some CGI animation has been incorporated in various other anime series.

The character models (Ryosuke especially) did leave little to be desired, but then that has always been the way with previous stages. I remember people complaining about Ryosuke having purple hair and Keisuke looking like he was in Super Saiyan mode in Fourth Stage. Third Stage set the benchmark for this in my opinion.

As for the sound effects, I probably need to go back and check several of them out, since I haven't really paid too much close attention to them in all honesty, but as far as other sounds go, I will say the use of Eurobeat was nowhere near as good as previous stages.

Fifth Stage showed me just how far off the deep end this series has gone.

Also, considering this will probably be made by the same idiots: fool me once...

Welcome again to the table. I was hoping that eventually you'd be able to type with proper spelling and grammar and have an adult discussion, but this apparently appears to be impossible. That's disappointing.

I believe I'm simply lowering everyone else's expectations so that they aren't disappointed when the movie comes out. If people go in with low expectations and it ends up being great, all the better! But if you think it's going to be the greatest Anime film ever made and it ends up being an extended episode of Fifth Stage... well, I think it goes without saying what happens then.

Feel free to add something of substance to the discussion, however. I'm all ears. smile.gif

Wow, this is exciting news. I agree with what others have said. Let's hold off on the champagne until we know who is producing the "final stage/movie". I hope it's someone else. Certainly it can't get worse...(or can it?)

I did want to clarify though in regards to the manga. This is it on July 29th? So Takumi vs. Shinji is the end? Really? That really bums me out. I thought for sure Shigeno would make it come full circle and have Takumi race Keisuke again. It would be the perfect ending. Even if they ended it like they did with Takumi vs. Ryosuke 2 on Akina and left it "open ended", even that would've been ok.

Talk about bittersweet...

You should be honest and say it depends heavily on the movie's popularity, orders of magnitude more heavily than overseas. The last camrips I saw of a film were of Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya and Evangelion 3.0:Q...and the camrips hit very late into their respective theatrical releases. EVA Q for instance had a complete camrip a month or two before the bluray came out. Yikes!

So in general, assume that there will not be a camrip. Initial D is not Haruhi nor Evangelion.

That's what I was suggesting by saying "mostly". To be honest, I was waiting for you or someone else to confirm the suspicion, since I'm not so knowledgeable about camrips for anime movies outside my knowing that Eva and Haruhi were leaked.

Ahh I see, cheers for clearing that up. I just hope they don't distort the ending like Capeta and so many other anime have.

Now that I have some time to calm down, I think the new movie or the Final Stage will focus on things happened right after the Takumi vs Shinji race. Remember the two-week time skip after the race in the manga? That could mean a lot of fillers, hopefully good fillers.

Rarely there is a time where I want an anime adaptation to add more original stuff the original manga source didn't have, but in the case of Initial D, yeah I wish they would even if its unlikely.

Final stage will focus on the last race. Clear some things up. Lot's of flash backs.

New Initial D The Movie: Hint is in the name! NEW!! So I assume this is the real ending, with some new material opening it up to something else. You know, an open ending. The Tak vs KT race!

HOLEY MOLEY! That's so long for an (anime) movie!

I wish the Final Stage will include a real full-fledged, incredible footage of Taku-Shinji battle. And some missing scenes form the manga, too.

If the release is like Haruhi, we'll have to wait 10 months after the movie release. Which is quite long.

The more I think about this the more Final Stage MUST have a new race. If it's a theatrical release, then there must be a lot of money invested. The Takumi Shinji race + boring manga aftermath alone will not recoup that investment. People won't get in line to watch that.

Posted by: Tessou Jul 24 2013, 10:21 AM
There was one extra race added in Third Stage and it barely counted. If they follow suit in the new movie and add another race for some stupid reason, it will be just like the final race in Third Stage.

Oh, so there's a lot more Initial D ahead of us than I thought. Final Stage = covers the rest of the manga. Like Tessou said, a 2 episode OAV seems likely, or maybe just a long OAV.

If the rest of the manga material will be featured in Final Stage OAV, then the unnamed theatrical movie MUST contain new races. Whether most Initial D lovers will accept the animated movie as canon remains to be seen. I dare to hope that the movie will be good, with Shigeno's stamp of approval and will become canon smile.gif

It would be incredibly funny to see Final Stage actually comprise solely of all the guys on the side of the road reminiscing about Takumi and Project D, and then the race actually starting... as the credits start rolling. Cue the "See you next time" text leading into the movie, which will finally show the race. troll.gif

Since "M.O.V.E." is disbanded its too bad we probably won't hear them do the opening theme for the upcoming stages. Now I know we've mentioned "ALTIMA" in the music thread as a possible replacement especially since Motsu is in that group. Unless M.O.V.E. magically sings it which probably won't happen.

For closing song though I can't say it would be Clutcho since they only did one song for the series, but two closing songs is possible. 3rd Stage did sort of have 2 closing songs with "Jirenma" just before the credits and "The Race is Over" being the eurobeat closing song.

And if they will release a PS4 Initial D game or an Arcade Stage 8 the same time the movie or the dvd is released. I don't know what else they could add in an Arcade Stage though, other than a more complete list of maps since they never post up all the maps in one arcade game.

Lol, their announcement was so confusing that even the Japanese (I'm assuming the uploader is Japanese anyway) are confused. Movie != Final Stage. The beginning of the video is the announcement of Final Stage, and ends with the copyright on the bottom-right of the screen. Then the screen blanks out and starts playing the PV for the movie. The movie title is shown at the end, and it's just called "Initial D the New Movie."

Just clearing that up before people start getting the wrong idea yet again.

Posted by: kyonpalm Jul 26 2013, 09:29 AM
This looks pretty great based on what I can see in that clip. Are those race scenes 3DCG? They look normally-animated. That'd be a first for Initial D - races not in 3DCG.

This trailer looks amazing. And judging from how the cars moved, it's actually all 2D this time, and really good 2D too! w00t2.gif The animation alone could make this worth watching, and a good adaptation of Initial D's plot, plus the obligatory awesome soundtrack, will make this a clear winner.

Not bad sounding, a good successor to m.o.v.e's OP/Closings if you ask me.

What Nomake Wan was saying is that the trailer/promo video that you saw was for the movie, not for Final Stage. We know nothing about Final Stage other than the fact that it continues where Fifth Stage left of and is an anime. The new movie is a brand new adaptation of Initial D as a whole in movie format. Where it takes place in terms of the timeline in the Initial D universe is yet to be seen.

I know why it can be confusing though, because in the beginning of the trailer, it says the decision to make Final Stage has been confirmed. Then it plays a trailer of the new movie. Other than the Summer 2014 date for the new movie, we have no idea when Final Stage will even be completed. It's in production, that's all we know.

My guess is that Final Stage will be released after the new movie, possibly in 2015. So then they can say Initial D will finally wraps up in two decades since the manga started in 1995. happy.gif

Wow this could be great,hm hopefully this initial D will be the best memories for me happy.gif

Maybe they will release movie remakes of each series, ala Berserk. awesome.gif

Posted by: Vortrex Jul 27 2013, 01:52 AM
Yeah good news while i'm on vacation !
And i have much better news! Summer 2014 i am going abroad, TO JAPAN!!!
And you know what that means! I gonna go watch Initial D The Movie in Japan!!!!! And i hope on the first day it lauches. awesome.gif
Can't wait for ir. But they could never cover up whole Initial D with a 120 min movie... so they probably do first stage only.

But Final Stage, i hope it will be the best initial d ever!!

Oh sorry my bad, I thought the trailer was for Final Stage but it is actually for the New Movie. But actually as what you have said and I have said, Final Stage and New Movie are 2 different things. From what I see now, I can understand that no news of Final Stage have been made in terms of when exactly it will come out BUT people say that Final Stage will come out end of 2013 and New Movie will come out summer 2014? That would be awesome. But in terms of chronological order, I guess it would be better if the New Movie came out first and then Final Stage as it would be much more fitting.

First we enjoy the remake and then standby for the final epic race which sounds nicer. But since its not that way, we can't do anything much but just wait it out and see how it pans out.

very interesting, a shame it's gonna be another year since I wasn't totally in love with 5th stage.

Anyone notice the pattern yet? Final Stage will maybe be just as long as Stage 1 or Stage 4.

Stage 1 - 2X episodes.
Stage 2 - 1X episodes.
Stage 3 - Movie
Stage 4 - 2X episodes.
Stage 5 - 1X episodes.
[The next movie]
Stage 6/Final Stage -??????

Two cycles can hardly be considered a pattern. Not to mention that 99% of the series would be filler, since the manga's content barely fits one or two more episodes' worth of anime. I honestly have no idea what Final Stage will be. Probably a multi-episode OVA, but almost certainly not an anime series.

Perhaps you may be right, but seeing how Stage 4 and up are already coming along how the first 3 stages are, there's a chance. Small chance perhaps, but it can happen. Though there might not be much to look forward to, seeing how the manga has gotten.

Not even. Second Stage was an OVA, Fifth Stage was PPV just like Fourth Stage was. That isn't even a pattern. If Fifth Stage had been a 13-episode OVA then you might have had something to stand on but it wasn't, so your theory is baseless.

The final manga make me very speechless! No one care about Takumi VS Keisuke battle will show up in this real world, and why no more painting for Bunta (Impreza) VS Takumi (AE86) better final tournament in the ended story, Yeah there's only to watched a last of Takumi racing his father Subaru type & no reason Shuichi Shigeno will show up the final special secret without my final dreams when summer coming up to 2014. facepalm.gif

So is right myself, very not fair he's final idea to ended up the final hope again for Fujiwara Teams victory forever & all the real worlds! thumb_down.gif

I'm also hoping that someone will release this to the US, whether legal or illegal. Hopefully legally.

The new movie looks pretty interesting, I kind of hope it's a re-telling of the series as a normal movie rather than a compilation of the races (à la Battle Stage) with improved animation.

We finally got to know the companies that will make the movie! The new Initial D animation movie will be produced by SANZIGEN Animation Studio and LIDEN FILMS.

Sanzigen did 3DCG for many big name series. check it out: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encycloped...any.php?id=5214 And just to name a few.

The problem is, they seem to do a lot of work for TV series, only a few titles under OAV. Not too sure if they are up to par with producing a movie. If any of you are familiar with this company, feel free to chime in.

The new movie will also be jointly produced by LIDEN FILMS for Animation Production. This is the important one because from the trailer, it seems many of the scenes will be 2D Animation. Check out their works: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encycloped...ny.php?id=11121

Then it'll come out on DVD.

Considering none of Fifth Stage was released on BD, it's questionable whether or not it will.

Facts, eat them.

You mean theaters in Japan, right? Or in parts of Asia? I doubt we will see it here in the U.S. And if you do happen to find out if it's going to be playing in the U.S., you better post it ASAP!

Boy did you fuck up on this one laugh.gif Guess we don't have to keep our expectations particularly low after all with these companies being far from B-rate.

I'll still wait for more info before setting my expectations high though, but the animation is definitely going to be amazing (albeit with some very unrealistic driving, but oh well, still gonna be amazing).

As for the license plate, I guess they did that to make it bear less resemblance to any real world ones. That, and possibly just not bothering to look up the numbers the anime's previously used.
EDIT: Yep, more likely the latter.

It still follows the five-digit pattern, though. They originally added the fifth number in order to eliminate any possible resemblance to real plates (Japanese plates have four digits), so I can't see any reason for changing just the numbers here. Maybe they just never thought to check the numbers from before for reference.

I think you guys are mistaking the credits here. "2nd Key Animation" and "Production Assistance" equate to being the B-Team on a show's animation staff. They are there to handle non-priority work, not the shit you're going to be ogling most of the time. Think about the guys that draw the static background characters and insert the random cars into backgrounds in Initial D. wink2.gif

Remember how some shonen anime (Inuyasha is a good example) end up having episodes where the art style is completely different than usual? Yeah, that's the b-team, or even the c-team, depending on scheduling.

So yes, the anime they had a hand in was impressive, but you're overblowing their contributions. That's like giving full production credit to the caterers just because they're listed.

Posted by: Filphil Aug 5 2013, 01:08 PM

Was the third stage movie branded in a similar way like not stating what it's about? Or did they make it clear what story it was about ?

I have a feeling that final stage will come out end of this year or beginning of next year. Then Initial D the new movie will come out in summer 2014. Then the live action movie 2 will come out 2014 end or in 2015.

Be more generic, I dare you. Also, the live action has nothing to to with the original franchise so good luck with that.

whats live action? sorry newbie here unsure.gif

Posted by: THE_HONDA_CG2 Aug 12 2013, 11:56 PM
To answer your question rwd2k, live action is when something other than animation is used in film. So the use of actors and real life settings is live action, something that is drawn is animation. Simple as that! happy.gif

if the live action movie Initial D 2 is another movie made by Korean (realisator and actors)
No hope for this
the first live movie was just too bad and doesn't stick always with the original.

Total agreement here, the movie was so bad.. I've seen it only once, because I never felt like rewatching it. The only nice thing it there were the cars themselves, but that weird actors, modified plot, and fast-forward racing scenes totally ruined it.

If there is another live action movie, I really hope it's japanese just like Wangan Midnight (2009), which was quite good!

I'm not sure why we're talking about the live action movie in this thread. It has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with this thread, period. Let's take that to the actual live-action pinned thread, shall we?

I second this comment. If they were to do anything, I would like every part of the manga painstakingly done in OVA format without rushing and a level of consistency for every character.

I was wondering does Shuichi Shigeno have any input in the animes? Apart from what is written of course, but does he look over to see if it is inline with his original vision?

Just by going off of how bad the first live action movie was, yeah it would be terrible.

But if they had a huge budget, and actually followed the manga closely. It would be pretty amazing.

This is of course falling into the trap in which you assume the person who said that was referring to the Chinese team that made the first movie, and not referring to a new movie with a different crew and Japanese cast etc etc.

No reason to assume either way, though I don't know how relevant that is to the topic of this thread. wink2.gif

I believe it's simply a transliteration error. Japanese are known to not be able to pronounce the "R" sound, so they change everything with "R" to "L."

A typical example is the team SSR (Seven Star Reaf) They really meant Seven Star Leaf, but since they pronounce R as L, it works out for them. Another example is Light Yagami from Death Note, his name is actually Raito Yagami. "Raito" is pronounced as "Lighto" in Japan. For us from the West, it seems pretty strange. So I believe Liden is just how they pronounce Raiden in Japan.

Grasping at straws doesn't even begin to describe it. You'd have to completely ignore the visuals in the trailer to make such an outrageous claim. That's clearly the First Stage iteration of the FD and First Stage iteration of the AE86. Note the ridiculous amount of stickers on the FD and the tail. Note the lack of carbon fiber on the 86. Note the 86's original tachometer working properly, meaning it's pre-engine swap.

Come on.

I like the idea of more story prior to the opening of the manga, but I think if it were covered, it would likely be in some form of brief flashbacks, as this is going to be a feature length film somewhere in the average running time of 90 minutes I doubt they would make the cut.

Also, if/when they do the same opening scene from 1st stage, I don't know how I would feel seeing it without hearing "Space Boy" playing over the top. ermm2.gif

So, will Final Stage be earlier or later than Initial D The Movie? I know there isn't an exact date, but they are both in 2014.
And i didn't knew Final Stage will be an OVA... If it will be an OVA of 1 episode, it would be like rushed Fifth Stage.

I'm putting my prequel theory back on the table.

How much time do you think they're going to spend on a prequel? The only canon pre-main-story content that exists are a handful of flashbacks (including that short story). There isn't nearly enough material for that. And it's also too boring a subject (in my opinion) to warrant new non-canon stuff written in. But let's assume the first film is a prequel - that only leaves two movies to account for the rest of the story's content. Those are going to be two hella condensed movies.

tl;dr - no.

But I personally watched it over a year after it came out with no real knowledge of what happens (except from what I heard about it on Japanese TV several years ago) and I COULDN'T STOP WATCHING.

That is pretty much the ultimate sign that a show is good.

On the other hand, not being willing to watch the second episode is a pretty good sign that a show is bad.

Wow, so this will be a 3 part movie series! Awesome! After seeing how good made for movies anime can be, like the Stein's Gate movie, and hearing that this will be 3 part series, I have high hopes. Stein's Gate made 5 million, and the Evangelion movies made well over 10 million, I'm predicting Initial D might make 5 million at least. I can see them putting a lot of effort into these movies, hopefully the 3rd movie will bring new material not seen in the manga (but that will still be accepted as canon)

EDIT: At first, there appears to be 2 general-looking car in the drifting scene, probably a MX5(NA8C) and a Lexus IS300(XE10)

EDIT 2: Oops, Japanese NA8Cs are Eunos Roadsters XE10s are called Toyota Altezza, sorry!

It'd be nice if this trilogy gave a fan epilogue to the ending of Initial D....too bad the manga resolution felt rushed and abrupt.

Another thing we're going to have to get used to: new voice actors! If you notice in the trailer, none of the regular cast are noted (although the differences in their voices isn't terribly big).

Could someone see who will be voicing the character and what other projects they've been in (stated in trailer)?

Avex released a much longer trailer today (1m30s) The trailer shows that the story will be based on First Stage's AE86 vs FD3S plot. Basically, they are trying to condense the first five or six episodes from Initial D First Stage into a 2-hour movie as a re-adaptation. So, everything looks refreshed. Even details like the REDSUNS sticker had been redesigned. One disappointing turnout though, the voice actors cast are completely changed. Here are the new voice actors (seiyuu):

Character...........Voice Actors (Seiyuu)
Takumi Fujiwara --- Mamoru Miyano (宮野 真守)
Keisuke Takahashi --- Yuuichi Nakamura (中村 悠一)
Ryousuke Takahashi --- Daisuke Ono (小野 大輔)
Itsuki Takeuchi --- Minoru Shiraishi (白石 稔)
Natsuki Mogi --- Maaya Uchida (内田 真礼)
Bunta Fujiwara --- Hiroaki Hirata (平田 広明)

So what are these new voice actors known for? Well, for starters, Takumi Fujiwara's new seiyuu happens to be the voice actor of Lighto Yagami from Death Note. That's a big one. Itsuki's new voice actor is also the one who voice as himself from Lucky ☆ Star. And Bunta's new voice actor is best known for his roles as Sanji from One Piece.

Honestly, I think it will take a little bit to get used to the new voices. But I think it will not affect the overall experience that much. Hopefully.

Edit: thank you very much to dummyinthecity for providing the link!!

Lol, when I watched the trailer I was sooo freaking out because I knew almost all of the voices but I couldn't remember their names pinch2.gif

But imma go miss Shinichiro, cause he's my favorite Seiyuu ever since I watched Anime.
*EDIT, the art and animation looks astonishing! Really looking forward tot that aspect. I hope it won't be fast-paced, like the Live-Action movie -.-

IF the voices are different in Final Stage too I'm going to get really really mad!!! blink.gif

I don't mind the new voices, but they did cut Kenji out

Posted by: mike962 May 15 2014, 02:49 AM
honestly while the art is good it's a bit pointless

they should have animated another car manga instead like Over-Rev or Countach

I'm waiting to watch it with a friend, so I have no clue at this point how it sounds.

Pretty cool trailer, but I just wonder what was up with recasting the whole cast?

I do like the guys and gal voicing Natsuki, Keisuke and Bunta (still would have preferred the original voice actors), but for Takumi, I just keep picturing the main character of Gundam 00 (same voice actor), when I hear his voice.

Posted by: kkullar May 15 2014, 10:51 AM
Everything looks great! But I feel really weird watching it, I guess there's gonna be no seb and have a feeling that if this is focusing on fd maybe fc battles.

Maybe this could be the whole Natsuki plot from start to finish, then in the second they focus on pre and during project d? Just a theory. It's really difficult to look at in the light of first stage because the run time probably will be less than two hours. And first stage was perfection.

But who knows it does feel very emotional not sure if that's because it feels like we are starting again.

I hope this doesn't make people forget how much win first stage was, I guess that's my main worry that changing everything might make people new to the franchise think this is the way it should be etc.

EDIT: yeah anyone know what the bgm is?

It's not as bad. Don't get your knickers in a twist!

Yes, it'll take some getting used to, but it should not be a problem as the voices are not too much different from the original cast and you're not seeing their (the actor's) faces.

There was zero reason not to use the old cast. No one has died. They all sound the same as they did in 1998. The only reason they would replace the entire cast would be to save money or pander to people who aren't ID fans but like the new voice actors.

Arbitrary voice actor changes in a series that had its latest release literally weeks ago bears little resemblance with replacing actors in a live action remake made 50 years after the original.

The original Namihei from Sazae-san JUST died this year...after FOURTY FOUR years of voicing the same role.

I'm just saying, there's precedence. I'm not saying I agree with it. I'm the one who wants Initial D to die quietly so it can rest in peace. It's less the VA changes that bother me and more that they're prolonging the death of the series.

the problem is there is nothing in to fill the vacuum

no anime of Countach, Over-Rev or Wangan Midnight C1 Runner facepalm.gif

and it's stupid cos all those mangas ended so they know exactly how many episodes it would take and what to cut out

It sure does alienate fans in a sense (although I really liked Abrams' Star Trek movies, I'd say even more than the original six) since it is something new based on the thing that fans have watched and grown attached to.

In the case of something like Star Trek it made sense to re-cast the roles since the original actors are too old (or no longer alive), but in this case it doesn't make a lot of sense to me since the original voice actors are still alive and have just completed work on the same cast of voices recently. That's really the problem I have with the re-casting, why did they do it when the original actors are still around. The only answer I see making sense is these movies are to attract new fans to continue to build this bankable franchise (so they can continue to milk it and get lots of cash) with and perhaps to create something new with the series.

Shigeno lost the magic somewhere around the middle of Project.D. He tried to get it back...but the Anime adaptation failed to grab hold of that attempt. It just kept doing the same old shit it had been, except at an even lower quality level. It's an absolute insult to fans.

Since I already know what they're going to do with it, I don't want to see it live even one more day. The series is over. It's done. There is no more, there will be no more, and I don't want any more.

Leave the door open for some other series, like some of the other racing manga listed above. Just...don't let Avex do it. They've killed too many decent shows. I'm still waiting for Wangan Midnight OST 3. dry.gif

It just goes to show how no-one is interested in cars or street racing anymore, with rising fuel prices and no cheap sports cars and all.

Also, with a few exeptions, street racing in pop culture died c.2006, and everything related to it after that has been between "could be better" and "absolute crap".

@Nomake Wan: Not trying to challenge your seniority, but you do know there is more to Initial D than the later volumes where the quality dropped off considerably. Personally, I am looking forward to the movie, because I'm curious of how this new approach to this old series works.

The "Akina's Eight-Six" arc, mainly. I've seen post of people saying that they enjoy reading the original arc of the series because it did truly show how Takumi developed as a driver before he was called up to Project D. As such, I'm more likely to read them again over the Project D arc (although, there were some interesting battles during that arc, as well).

I call bullshit on no cheap sports cars... you can buy an R32 GT-R for a couple thousand dollars. The problem isn't so much the cost of the car, but that kids in Japan are less and less interested in cars.

Sorry, should've clarified: new cheap sports cars i.e. Silvias, Sprinters etc. until now.

And I heard a while ago that more and more of the older cars are getting scrapped due to the rising cost to keep them on the road (is this still true?)

First Stage is already a thing. Your argument is invalid. Since what you gave as an example already exists, it serves as no counter to my argument that Initial D needs to die. Perhaps you were confused? I do not mean that all copies of Initial D should be burned. Hell no! I just mean that they need to stop trying to extend it. It needs to end. That's what I'm saying.

That applies to ALL cars, but I'd say there are vastly more sports cars from the 80s and 90s still on the road for every car sold than grocery getters.

It costs a ton of money to own a car, period. Parking, shaken, tires, and gasoline. But you still see lots of young guys driving GT-Rs and RX-7s they never could have afforded to buy when they were new.

I think that, due to it being something of a reboot, they wanted to distance itself from the original anime. I have a feeling we won't be seeing any Eurobeat or M.O.V.E in these films. I also think it's going to move away from the manga quite a bit too, we've already seen signs of this from the changing of the license plates and race team logos. I've said it before, but you only need to look at the recent Berserk trilogy to hazard a guess at how much these films may vary from the manga.

Posted by: fEELINGS96 May 19 2014, 09:35 AM
i had a feeling about that as well! though i dont mind with the changes and stuff. like i guess that's how reboot goes. i just hope they still have that "Initial D" feel for all of us w00t2.gif (also if i remember correctly M.O.V.E disbanded right? sad.gif )

I give absolutely no fucks about this. VAs are, in general, cheap as hell to hire. The vast majority of VAs have to work second jobs.

I guarantee none of the cast of Initial D cost especially much to hire compared to the cost of animating the movie and licensing the rights.

Relax, it's just speculation. There are several changes taking place, so it's safe to assume that the choice of music COULD be one of them. I don't want it to be, since I am a fan of Eurobeat, but I want to prepare myself in case it's missing.

Horseshit, they sound exactly the same as they did in Stage 1. They're all adult voice professional voice actors. It's not as if their voices changed. I'm not saying they should have just reused the audio from Stage 1, but I want to know why they thought changing the entire cast was a good idea.

This.

I don't understand why people think they sound worse. If anything, they sound worse because the races and characters have become boring. There's not many of those high tension, dramatic shouting moments like you would find in stages 1-3.

Ever thought that maybe the VAs were getting tired of voicing the series for over ten years?

That does sound reasonable, but I still have this feeling that they're doing what other reboots do and hire a new cast.

Guys, guys, hold on a second. Has anyone maybe considered that the new VAs were, you know... cheaper to hire?

Have you considered if they were more expensive to hire?

Many of the original voice actors, Koyasu in particular, are household names. I would expect them to be pretty damn expensive to get, so I'm just assuming when I say that. I'm not a VAfag, so don't take me too seriously.

You have a good point there.

The actual work hours required to voice a character in less than 50 hours of actual footage is really, really small. No one is going to give up a payday because they've been playing the same character sporadically for 14 years. If anything, they'd be glad to have a steady job. There are VAs who played characters every week for decades.

It's not like making a movie or TV show, which is a lot more work and far more likely to typecast you if you do something for too long.

In the case of a VA, I'd say being a fixture in a series is the best way to get your name out there and keep it there.

Your post reminded of long running shows like One Piece (another example is Dragon Ball Z, although shorter than One Piece) which have been running since 1999 with hardly any breaks between seasons, unlike say Initial D, and the main cast has not changed in that series. So I can't imagine the actors getting bored of a steady pay cheque.

The most logical answer is that Avex is doing a fresh take on the series, which means ditching the original cast. We'll probably never know because they never answer questions like this.

I am sure they'll get around to at least commenting on the change eventually...

FWIW, some comments I read online on Japanese sites were "they're just pandering to the fujoshi and VA otaku."

to be honest really im still unsure about eurobeats or not in the new movie trilogy. but like i said before, these new movie adaptations are more like a reboot, like a renewal if you may. i dont have any problems with the new VAs personally, im just surprised they put Daisuke Ono and Yuichi Nakamura as Ryosuke and Keisuke o_o
