Ok ok, engine code P0455, EVAP leak (large) most would think its the gas cap, but that would be an evap leak (small) I already replaced the cap, had autozone reset the code and it went away for about a day, then came back on (no new fillups to loosen the cap to cause another loose cap read) so, im guessing its a hose that is cracked or loose. I recently had my oil changed and I think they might have knocked something loose. At least thats what I hope and I hope its not a crack somewhere.

But where do I start? where are the evap hoses to check for cracks or loose hoses.. I havent gotten under the car yet due to bad weather and no garage or overhead to work under but was told to turn it on after its lifted a little to listen for a vacuum sound.

Any help would be appreciated.. thanks

My opinion as a professional: Check the lines under the car for damage as well as the canister in the engine bay. Something has to be damaged pretty noticeably for that code to pop up. Finding the lines is simple, just find the canister and everything stems from there.

My personal opinion: Good luck finding the funds to fix that shit, emissions components are overpriced and total bullshit. Delete the canister, valve, and vac lines and call it good (but leave the solenoid so it doesn't throw another CEL).

That. One advantage of buying an 80's car is that I don't really have to deal with that crap. I really hate that those things will pop a CEL. Does the car run just fine with that light? Then why the hell is it turned on?

Because "running fine" just isn't good enough for the government anymore.

I'll admit, the environment is too important to leak unburnt hydrocarbons into. Why, then, are we forced to pay for needlessly complicated systems that don't really do a whole hell of a lot? What was the matter with putting a 1 way valve into the fuel filler and leaving it at that?

How is this any good at protecting the environment? Isn't it more important that we stop oil and brake fluid from getting into the groundwater? EPA needs to get its priorities straight.

Idles fine, runs fine, no notice of MPG loss or anything... so im hoping its something loose and not cracked, but I will check under it today........


So I checked under it and visually inspected every hose I can see, no cracks or no strong fumes as if a leak and no vacuum noise as if there were a leak... so only thing I can GUESS is the gas cap might be acting up AGAIN... (its super sensitive on an rx8 from what I read) so, I did get a replacement from autozone which it went away then came back a few days later, so I will next get an official gas cap from mazda themselves at only $12-$15 and hope for the best.

Did you notice it after you filled up with gas? The rx8 has a air sensor in the gas tank that if the cap isnt super tight it will set off a check engine. Its really retarded but so is a rx8 (from a rx7 owners standpoint).

Nah it wasn't during or even close to a fill up when it first came on, but when I went to refill I noticed the cap wasnt tight anymore.. well I got a new gas cap from mazda, looks fancy compared to the autozone one. So I will see what happens, had autozone reset the cell, and I hope it stays off for good.

Eh, I like the rx-8 I don't think its retarded in the least, I tried getting an FD but the guy who I was gonna buy it from sold it 3 hours before I was going to get it so I settled for an 8. I do not regret my decision

It wont set it off right away it will after a few gallons have left the tank and create the air pocket assuming it was from a fill up to start with.

you said it yourself you settled for a rx8. Cant be that happy with it.
