So recently I got a 2007 Subaru Impreza WRX STI. It's a 6 speed manual transmission and I do have a LITTLE bit of experience when it comes to manual. However I am confused, can someone give me a rundown on how to make sure the gear is in either 6th or reverse?

I believe that you can't go into reverse without pushing the gear lever down first. Can't you just try it yourself?

... This has to be a joke. You buy a STi and you don't even know how to drive a manual? Look at the shift knob, it should have the pattern on it. R is reverse. How do you make sure? Well, release the clutch and add some throttle, and see what direction you're going. This is ridiculous.

Ok, what you want to do OP, is scroll on down to Nomake's post and there is a picture of your gear lay out.

My 6 speed actually has European layout so R is located somewhere else.

How is that a joke? I mean we all have to learn sometime. Does he have to start off with a junk car? I mean my brother learned in his wrx and i learned in my ae86. You have the answers you are looking for man stay positive and good luck driving. be careful.

Some people buy manual cars without knowing how to drive one and then learn to drive stick by being forced to drive that car. That's how I learned to drive stick in my Celica. Ok, after rereading the OP's post it seems his questions is more along the lines of, "How do I ensure I don't shift into R on accident?"

I can't help you there seeing as my reverse is located somewhere else and has a protective pad or something that requires a bit of force to make sure you don't downshift into reverse on accident.

ToyotaFan: I don't think that layout is correct. I'm pretty sure that the layout on a Subie six-speed is such that Reverse is pushing the shift lever all the way right, past the "stop" position, then pulling down. In fact yeah, I just googled it (which by the way, how come none of you--OP included--bothered to do that???) and I'm right.



Remove your shifter image lest the OP become confused and put it in second instead.

LOL. Before asking in this thread, I suggest the OP get a nice beverage, find a comfortable spot, sit down, and read the owners manual.

Trust me, it takes alot of the guess-work out of actually driving the car.

Lol 6th and R. The only one which gets annoying is when R is beside 1st. But I got used to it.

Ok basically I just got my first ever manual car for a birthday present. Plus the car never came with a book.

Have to agree with this.

In most countries, you need have a specific licence, ie automatic only, or automatic and manual. You cant pass a test in an automatic, then go and buy a manual, without having a manual specific licecnce..... so I can see chillined's point

It's true.

Here in Japan - you have to have either a manual license or an automatic license (for normal passenger automobiles). Automatic license holders cannot drive manual transmission vehicles. But Manual license holders can drive automatics.

There are two separate tests for it.

I know it's strange. In Canada, I passed my full graduated "G" license test not with my Impreza, but with my instructor's automatic Toyota Corolla.

Thank god I had a full graduated license - cuz when I came here and got my Japanese drivers license, I could instantly drive manual transmission vehicles (even though I didn't have to take any test or nothing - simply cuz I'm Canadian and have a full Canadian driver's license).

That's only in NA though, other parts of the world it isn't nearly so many.

I'm really not sure what to think about the number of manual cars in America. I know that it's difficult to find one in a large dealership, but if you take a look at a college parking lot, a surprising number of them are manuals. Are manuals regaining popularity in America?

I think that's due to younger guys not having to settle down yet so they can still drive manual cars. When I bought my Celica the owner was selling it to get an automatic family car that his wife could drive since she dented the Celica the one time she tried backing it out.

I don't think her backing up the car and denting it was the reason. I mean, going reverse has its own hazards that are independent of whether it's a manual or automatic: in both, you'll need to shift to reverse to go backwards. More likely, that was merely an example of his wife's poor driving ability and figured that she'd do better with an automatic since less effort is needed to drive compared to a manual.

But yeah, you could be right. Still, that means that there is still interest in manuals and that they won't die out anytime soon.

They went as far as getting you an STI for a gift?
