First of all, the forums has been successfully migrated from SurpassHosting.com to DreamHost.com on 5:30 PM PST (GMT -08:00) December 17th, 2004. Let me recap on what happened earlier on the forums; After I was informed there was a DDoS attack on the previous server, (Dec. 9th, 2004) the forums had been going down from time to time. After suffering 3 days of intermittent downtimes, the server seemed to be back to normal and everything seems fine again. (Dec. 13th, 2004) However, the stable state did not last long. The server soon became very unstable again. At this point, I've already sent 4 tickets to their support department, asking just what is going on with the server. Again, I was informed another DDoS attack is taking place. I also posted my question on their support forums. Sadly, none of their admins made an reply to it. No one explained what really happened to the server. Honestly, DDoS attack should not last that long. In this case, 5 days. On Dec. 14th, 2004, they have blocked a lot of large US Internet Service Provider's IP ranges. A lot of the members were unable to get on the forums because their IP was banned from the server.
I was very frustrated and disappointed about how they handled the situation. So basically, I have to send every single member's IP address to them in order to get everyone back on the forums, but the point is, what happen to the people who haven't sign up on the forums ? How do I get their IP address ? Thinking about that just made me angry, it really destroy the purpose of having an online website, or forums in this case. Although a few other customers and I kept complaining to them on their support forums, but seemed like they ignore all of the complaints altogether. Well, that leaves me with no other options but to switch to a new host. In order to switch to a new host, I needed to change the DNS settings, and point it to the new host. Changing DNS usually takes 24 - 48 hours. That explains the downtime for the past 2 days. This new host is fairly fast. It's also very reliable. Hopefully no more connectivity problems happen again. Thanks for all of your patience and support.

Old host was located at Orlando, FL. and the new host is located in California I believe. I'll double check on that later. This post has been edited by Perry on Dec 18 2004, 02:04 AM
